Leptospira infection in rats: A literature review of global prevalence and distribution.

BACKGROUND: The role of rodents in Leptospira epidemiology and transmission is well known worldwide. Rats are known to carry different pathogenic serovars of Leptospira spp. capable of causing disease in humans and animals. Wild rats (Rattus spp.), especially the Norway/brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) and the black rat (R. rattus), are the most important sources of Leptospira infection, as they are abundant in urban and peridomestic environments. In this study, we compiled and summarized available data in the literature on global prevalence of Leptospira exposure and infection in rats, as well a

Mapping Multi-Disease Risk during El Niño: An Ecosyndemic Approach.

El Niño is a quasi-periodic pattern of climate variability and extremes often associated with hazards and disease. While El Niño links to individual diseases have been examined, less is known about the cluster of multi-disease risk referred to as an ecosyndemic, which emerges during extreme events. The objective of this study was to explore a mapping approach to represent the spatial distribution of ecosyndemics in Piura, Peru at the district-level during the first few months of 1998. Using geographic information systems and multivariate analysis, descriptive and analytical methodologies were

Environmental modelling of visceral leishmaniasis by susceptibility-mapping using neural networks: a case study in north-western Iran.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a potentially fatal vector-borne zoonotic disease, which has become an increasing public health problem in the north-western part of Iran. This work presents an environmental health modelling approach to map the potential of VL outbreaks in this part of the country. Radial basis functional link networks is used as a data-driven method for predictive mapping of VL in the study area. The high susceptibility areas for VL outbreaks account for 36.3% of the study area and occur mainly in the north (which may affect the neighbouring countries) and South (which is a war

[Geographical expansion of visceral leishmaniasis in the State of Pernambuco].

This study aimed to demonstrate the geographical expansion of visceral leishmaniasis in Pernambuco State, Brazil. With data on the number of visceral leishmaniasis cases notified from 1990 to 2001, maps showing the biannual evolution of the geographical distribution of the disease per municipality were elaborated. A map of the cumulative geographical distribution of the cases registered during the whole period was also constructed. From 1990 to 2001, 1,737 cases of visceral leishmaniasis were notified in Pernambuco. In 1990, 15.2% (n = 28) of the municipalities notified cases of the disease. I

Mapping Histoplasma capsulatum Exposure, United States.

Maps of Histoplasma capsulatum infection prevalence were created 50 years ago; since then, the environment, climate, and anthropogenic land use have changed drastically. Recent outbreaks of acute disease in Montana and Nebraska, USA, suggest shifts in geographic distribution, necessitating updated prevalence maps. To create a weighted overlay geographic suitability model for Histoplasma, we used a geographic information system to combine satellite imagery integrating land cover use (70%), distance to water (20%), and soil pH (10%). We used logistic regression modeling to compare our map with s

STI phase and the geography of sexual partnerships: prevalence of long-distance sexual contacts among chlamydia, gonorrhea, and coinfected STI cases in Manitoba, Canada.

We utilized public health data and a geographic information system (ArcGIS) to study long-distance sexual partnerships (opposite and same sex partnerships) among chlamydia, gonorrhea, and coinfected STI (sexually transmitted infection) cases. The top 10% of relationships among chlamydia and gonorrhea cases and their contacts equaled or exceeded 198 km and 237 km respectively; the top 15% of partnerships among coinfected cases equaled or exceeded 207 km. This research also detected proportionately more long-distance partnerships among gonorrhea cases than among chlamydia cases. Wasserheit and A

Sampling Strategies for Accurate Hazard Mapping of Noise and Other Hazards Using Short-Duration Measurements.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a common hormone disorder affecting reproductive and metabolic health of reproductive-age women, was shown in a previous study from these authors to be associated with increased sympathetic tone. Increased sympathetic tone contributes to long-term health risks for cardiovascular disease and promotes PCOS pathogenesis. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether weekly osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) improves physiologic measures of sympathetic tone in women with PCOS. METHODS: In the second phase of a larger study from this author group, 25 women wi

Early Devonian (Late Emsian) shark fin remains (Chondrichthyes) from the Paraná Basin, southern Brazil.

We report on the pioneering discovery of Devonian fish remains in the Paraná Basin, which represents the southernmost record of fishes from that period in mainland South America. The material comes from an outcrop at the lower portion of the São Domingos Formation, within Sequence C of the Paraná-Apucarana sub-basin in Tibagi, State of Paraná. Marine invertebrates are abundant in the same strata. The dark colored fish remains were collected in situ and represent natural moulds of partially articulated shark fin rays (radials). No elements such as teeth or prismatic cartilage have been preserve

Modelling environmental factors correlated with podoconiosis: a geospatial study of non-filarial elephantiasis.

INTRODUCTION: The precise trigger of podoconiosis - endemic non-filarial elephantiasis of the lower legs - is unknown. Epidemiological and ecological studies have linked the disease with barefoot exposure to red clay soils of volcanic origin. Histopathology investigations have demonstrated that silicon, aluminium, magnesium and iron are present in the lower limb lymph node macrophages of both patients and non-patients living barefoot on these clays. We studied the spatial variation (variations across an area) in podoconiosis prevalence and the associated environmental factors with a goal to be

Spatial distribution of canine visceral leishmaniasis and its relationship with human visceral leishmaniasis in a municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is an infectious disease that represents a considerable public health problem. In Brazil, VL was gradually expanded in all the territory and from rural to urban areas. A notable concentration of VL emerged in 2010 in the Médio Paraíba region of the state of Rio de Janeiro, where the municipality of Barra Mansa is located. However, information on the geographic distribution of VL in this municipality is scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize the spatial distribution of VL in Barra Mansa from 2014 to 2023. METHODS: This exploratory epidemiolo

Using Geocoding to Identify COVID-19 Outbreaks in Congregate Residential Settings: San Francisco's Outbreak Response in Single-Room Occupancy Hotels.

More than 500 single-room occupancy hotels (SROs), a type of low-cost congregate housing with shared bathrooms and kitchens, are available in San Francisco. SRO residents include essential workers, people with disabilities, and multigenerational immigrant families. In March 2020, with increasing concerns about the potential for rapid transmission of COVID-19 among a population with disproportionate rates of comorbidity, poor access to care, and inability to self-isolate, the San Francisco Department of Public Health formed an SRO outbreak response team to identify and contain COVID-19 clusters

Integrated Social-Behavioral and Ecological Risk Maps to Prioritize Local Public Health Responses to Lyme Disease.

BACKGROUND: The risk of contracting Lyme disease (LD) can vary spatially because of spatial heterogeneity in risk factors such as social-behavior and exposure to ecological risk factors. Integrating these risk factors to inform decision-making should therefore increase the effectiveness of mitigation interventions. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to develop an integrated social-behavioral and ecological risk-mapping approach to identify priority areas for LD interventions. METHODS: The study was conducted in the Montérégie region of Southern Quebec, Canada, where LD is a newly en

GEOGRAPHICAL EXPANSION OF CANINE VISCERAL LEISHMANIASIS IN RIO DE JANEIRO STATE, BRAZIL.

Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is a vector-borne disease that affects humans, and domestic and wild animals. It is caused by the protozoan Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum (syn = Leishmania chagasi). The domestic dog (Canis familiaris) is considered the main reservoir of the etiologic agent of VL in domestic and peridomestic environments. In the past three years, although control actions involving domestic dogs are routinely performed in endemic areas of the Rio de Janeiro State, new cases of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) have been reported in several municipalities. The objective of this s

Geographic Distribution and Expansion of Human Lyme Disease, United States.

Lyme disease occurs in specific geographic regions of the United States. We present a method for defining high-risk counties based on observed versus expected number of reported human Lyme disease cases. Applying this method to successive periods shows substantial geographic expansion of counties at high risk for Lyme disease.

Expert knowledge sourcing for public health surveillance: national tsetse mapping in Uganda.

In much of sub-Saharan Africa, availability of standardized and reliable public health data is poor or negligible. Despite continued calls for the prioritization of improved health datasets in poor regions, public health surveillance remains a significant global health challenge. Alternate approaches to surveillance and collection of public health data have thus garnered increasing interest, though there remains relatively limited research evaluating these approaches for public health. Herein, we present a case study applying and evaluating the use of expert knowledge sources for public health

Mapping a Plasmodium transmission spatial suitability index in Solomon Islands: a malaria monitoring and control tool.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a challenge in Solomon Islands, despite government efforts to implement a coordinated control programme. This programme resulted in a dramatic decrease in the number of cases and mortality however, malaria incidence remains high in the three most populated provinces. Anopheles farauti is the primary malaria vector and a better understanding of the spatial patterns parasite transmission is required in order to implement effective control measures. Previous entomological studies provide information on the ecological preferences of An. farauti but this information has

Using geographical information systems and cartograms as a health service quality improvement tool.

INTRODUCTION: Disease prevalence can be spatially analysed to provide support for service implementation and health care planning, these analyses often display geographic variation. A key challenge is to communicate these results to decision makers, with variable levels of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) knowledge, in a way that represents the data and allows for comprehension. The present research describes the combination of established GIS methods and software tools to produce a novel technique of visualising disease admissions and to help prevent misinterpretation of data and less opt

Geographic clonal tracking in macaques provides insights into HSPC migration and differentiation.

The geographic distribution of hematopoiesis at a clonal level is of interest in understanding how hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) and their progeny interact with bone marrow (BM) niches during regeneration. We tagged rhesus macaque autologous HSPCs with genetic barcodes, allowing clonal tracking over time and space after transplantation. We found marked geographic segregation of CD34+ HSPCs for at least 6 mo posttransplantation, followed by very gradual clonal mixing at different BM sites over subsequent months to years. Clonal mapping was used to document local production of
