Wrist EMG Improves Gesture Classification for Stroke Patients.

Electromyography (EMG) is a popular human-machine interface for hand gesture control of assistive and rehabilitative technology. EMG can be used to estimate motor intent even when an individual cannot physically move due to weakness or paralysis. EMG is traditionally recorded from the extrinsic hand muscles located in the forearm. However, the wrist has become an increasingly attractive recording location for commercial applications as EMG sensors can be integrated into wrist-worn wearables (e.g., watches, bracelets). Here we explored the impact that recording EMG from the wrist, instead of th

Nasogastric tube utilization after esophagectomy: an unnecessary gesture?

INTRODUCTION: Nasogastric decompressive tube utilization has been accepted as one of the basic perioperative care measures after esophageal resection surgery. However, with the development of multimodal rehabilitation programs and without clear evidence to support their use, the systematic indication of this measure may be controversial. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective, descriptive and comparative study of patients who had undergone Ivor-Lewis esophagectomy in our center -from January 2015 to December 2018- with placement (Group S), or without placement (Group N) of a decompressive tube i

A description of verbal and gestural communication during postictal aphasia.

Patients suffering from drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy show substantial language deficits (i.e., anomia) during their seizures and in the postictal period (postictal aphasia). Verbal impairments observed during the postictal period may be studied to help localizing the epileptogenic zone. These explorations have been essentially based on simple tasks focused on speech, thus disregarding the multimodal nature of verbal communication, particularly the fact that, when speakers want to communicate, they often produce gestures of various kinds. Here, we propose an innovative procedure for te

The cortical signature of impaired gesturing: Findings from schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is characterized by deficits in gesturing that is important for nonverbal communication. Research in healthy participants and brain-damaged patients revealed a left-lateralized fronto-parieto-temporal network underlying gesture performance. First evidence from structural imaging studies in schizophrenia corroborates these results. However, as of yet, it is unclear if cortical thickness abnormalities contribute to impairments in gesture performance. We hypothesized that patients with deficits in gesture production show cortical thinning in 12 regions of interest (ROIs) of a gestur

Language, gesture, and handedness: Evidence for independent lateralized networks.

Language, gesture, and handedness are in most people represented in the left cerebral hemisphere. To explore the relations among these attributes, we collected fMRI images in a large sample of left- and right-handers while they performed language tasks and watched action sequences. Regions of interest included the frontal and parietal areas previously identified as comprising an action-observation network, and the frontal and temporal areas comprising the primary areas for language production and comprehension. All of the language areas and most of the action-observation areas showed an overal

Peculiarities in the gestural repertoire: an early marker for Rett syndrome?

We studied the gestures used by children with classic Rett syndrome (RTT) to provide evidence as to how this essential aspect of communicative functions develops. Seven participants with RTT were longitudinally observed between 9 and 18 months of life. The gestures used by these participants were transcribed and coded from a retrospective analysis of a video footage. Gestures were classified as deictic gestures, play schemes, and representational gestures. Results of the analysis showed that the majority of gestures observed were of deictic character. There were no gestures that could be class

Children with dyslexia are slow to articulate a single speech gesture.

In addition to their well-established problems in phonological processing, children with dyslexia show reduced speed of articulation. Two groups of children with dyslexia, mean ages 13 and 16 years, participated together with two groups of normally achieving children matched for age and IQ, with 33 participants in total. Participants were asked to articulate repeatedly, as fast as they could, either a single articulatory gesture /p/ /t/ or /k/ or the sequence 'putuku'. The waveforms generated were analysed in two ways; the time per gesture excluding inter-articulatory pauses (articulatory dura

Hand use and gestural communication in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

Hand use in gestural communication was examined in 115 captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). Hand use was measured in subjects while they gestured to food placed out of their reach. The distribution of hand use was examined in relation to sex, age, rearing history, gesture type, and whether the subjects vocalized while gesturing. Overall, significantly more chimpanzees, especially females and adults, gestured with their right than with their left hand. Foods begs were more lateralized to the right hand than pointing, and a greater prevalence of right-hand gesturing was found in subjects who s

Investigation of gestural and pantomime performance in chronic schizophrenic inpatients.

The present study compared the performance on apraxia tests and additional motor tasks between medicated chronic schizophrenic inpatients (n = 21) and healthy subjects (n = 21). Praxis testing did not reveal a clear-cut apractic syndrome in the patient group. The most striking difference between patients and healthy controls was the more frequent use of body parts as object (BPO) by schizophrenic patients (P < 0.0003). There was no significant difference in psychopathology between subgroups classified according to their BPO performance, although a tendency towards a difference in duration of i

Dual-layer hand gestures decoding with wireless epidural braincomputer interface in a tetraplegia.

Spinal cord injury disrupts the neural connections between the brain and limbs, resulting in tetraplegia. Brain-computer interface (BCI) hold promise for enabling voluntary limb movements in tetraplegic patients, yet achieving fine motor control of the hand remains a challenge. Invasive BCI based on intracortical electrode arrays have demonstrated real-time multi-gesture decoding. However, their long-term safety is a major barrier in clinical applications. In this study, a tetraplegic patient was implanted with our recently developed wireless minimally invasive BCI, which records epidural fiel

Evidences for gestures associated with pruritus in very young infants: a pilot study.

The anatomical and functional basis for pruritus is present from birth. However, pruritus in this population is largely underestimated. The aim of this study was to analyze behaviors potentially associated with pruritus in infants under 6 months suffering from atopic dermatitis (AD). Infants under 6 months of age were enrolled in two arms: a healthy group and a group with moderate or severe AD. Infants were videotaped for at least 5 min and videos were analyzed by ethologists using the scan-sampling method. Thirty-four infants aged 2.5-5.5 months were included, 9 healthy infants and 25 infants

Decoding Gestures in Electromyography: Spatiotemporal Graph Neural Networks for Generalizable and Interpretable Classification.

In recent years, significant strides in deep learning have propelled the advancement of electromyography (EMG)-based upper-limb gesture recognition systems, yielding notable successes across a spectrum of domains, including rehabilitation, orthopedics, robotics, and human-computer interaction. Despite these achievements, prevailing methodologies often overlook the intrinsic physical configurations and interconnectivity of multi-channel sensory inputs, resulting in a failure to adequately capture relational information embedded within the connections of deployed EMG sensor network topology. Assessment of Low-Density Force Myography Armband for Classification of Upper Limb Gestures.

Using force myography (FMG) to monitor volumetric changes in limb muscles is a promising and effective alternative for controlling bio-robotic prosthetic devices. In recent years, there has been a focus on developing new methods to improve the performance of FMG technology in the control of bio-robotic devices. This study aimed to design and evaluate a novel low-density FMG (LD-FMG) armband for controlling upper limb prostheses. The study investigated the number of sensors and sampling rate for the newly developed LD-FMG band. The performance of the band was evaluated by detecting nine gesture

A database of high-density surface electromyogram signals comprising 65 isometric hand gestures.

Control of contemporary, multi-joint prosthetic hands is commonly realized by using electromyographic signals from the muscles remaining after amputation at the forearm level. Although this principle is trying to imitate the natural control structure where muscles control the joints of the hand, in practice, myoelectric control provides only basic hand functions to an amputee using a dexterous prosthesis. This study aims to provide an annotated database of high-density surface electromyographic signals to aid the efforts of designing robust and versatile electromyographic control interfaces fo

Differential Representation of Articulatory Gestures and Phonemes in Precentral and Inferior Frontal Gyri.

Speech is a critical form of human communication and is central to our daily lives. Yet, despite decades of study, an understanding of the fundamental neural control of speech production remains incomplete. Current theories model speech production as a hierarchy from sentences and phrases down to words, syllables, speech sounds (phonemes), and the actions of vocal tract articulators used to produce speech sounds (articulatory gestures). Here, we investigate the cortical representation of articulatory gestures and phonemes in ventral precentral and inferior frontal gyri in men and women. Our re

Communication with emblematic gestures: shared and distinct neural correlates of expression and reception.

Emblematic (or symbolic) gestures allow individuals to convey a variety of thoughts and emotions ranging from approval to hostility. The use of such gestures involves the execution of a codified motor act by the addresser and its perception and decoding by the addressee. To examine underlying common and distinct neural correlates, we used fMRI tasks in which subjects viewed video clips of emblematic one-hand gestures. They were asked to (1) take the perspective of the addresser and imagine executing the gestures ("expression" condition), and to (2) take the perspective of the addressee and ima

Spoken language and arm gestures are controlled by the same motor control system.

Arm movements can influence language comprehension much as semantics can influence arm movement planning. Arm movement itself can be used as a linguistic signal. We reviewed neurophysiological and behavioural evidence that manual gestures and vocal language share the same control system. Studies of primate premotor cortex and, in particular, of the so-called "mirror system", including humans, suggest the existence of a dual hand/mouth motor command system involved in ingestion activities. This may be the platform on which a combined manual and vocal communication system was constructed. In hum
