The pharmacological effects of ginkgo biloba, a plant extract, on the brain of dementia patients in comparison with tacrine.

In 1994, a standardized dry extract of Ginkgo biloba leaves (SeGb), has been approved by German health authorities for the treatment of primary degenerative dementia and vascular dementia. More than 24 different brands of Ginkgo biloba extract are sold in the United States. Tacrine, also known as tetrahydroaminoacrine (THA), and donepezil are currently the only drugs approved in the United States for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Previous studies demonstrated that SeGb and tacrine induce significant pharmacological effects on the brains of young, healthy human males, as determined by b

LC-MS based untargeted metabolomics studies of the metabolic response of Ginkgo biloba extract on arsenism patients.

Arsenic is an environmentally ubiquitous toxic metalloid. Chronic exposure to arsenic may lead to arsenicosis, while no specific therapeutic strategies are available for the arsenism patients. And Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) exhibited protective effect in our previous study. However, the mechanisms by which GBE protects the arsenism patients remain poorly understood. A liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) based untargeted metabolomics analysis was used to study metabolic response in arsenism patients upon GBE intervention. In total, 39 coal-burning type of arsenism patients and 50 h

Therapeutic Versus Preventative Use of Ginkgo biloba Extract (EGb 761) against Indomethacin-Induced Gastric Ulcer in Mice.

The main bioactive constituents in the standardized Ginkgo biloba leaf extract (EGb 761) are the terpene lactones and flavonoid glycosides. EGb 761's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties have previously been demonstrated. Indomethacin-induced gastric ulcers have a multifactorial etiology and represent a major restriction to its therapeutic utility. The underlying ulcerogenic process involves oxidative and inflammatory biomolecular insults. This study was performed to explore the curative and preventative benefits of EGb 761 in experimentally-induced ulcers. To develop gastric ulcers in

Ginkgo Biloba Extract Ameliorates Age-Related Mitochondrial Deficits in Human iPSCs and Their Derived Neurons and Astrocytes.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is a central feature of aging, driving bioenergetic decline, increased oxidative stress, and increased vulnerability to neurodegenerative diseases. Human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and iPSC-derived neurons provide powerful models to study these processes. Ginkgo biloba extract GBE LI1370 (GBE) has demonstrated antioxidant and mitochondria-protective properties in preclinical models, including improvements in mitochondrial membrane potential, reduction in reactive oxygen species, and enhanced neuronal survival. However, its effects on mitochondrial function
