Using a radial immunodiffusion technique the serum levels of pregnancy-associated globulin (PAG) have been measured in eighteen females before and during administration of combined oestrogen/progestogen oral contraceptives, in twenty-eight females before and after the oestrogen or progestogen component of oral contraceptives and in ten males before and during stilboestrol therapy for prostatic carcinoma. The choice between Basiliximab (BSX) or Anti-Thymocyte Globulin (ATG) as induction therapy in non-immunized kidney transplant recipients remains uncertain. Intravenous immune globulin (IGIV) was introduced a decade ago as a therapy for primary immunodeficiency diseases. It proved to be a valuable therapeutic substance for this purpose and is now considered to be the treatment of choice. Reported are the results of a retrospective study of 3156 patients who were treated at the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute, Bangkok, with equine rabies immune globulin (ERIG). Only 51 patients (1.6%) exhibited serum-sickness-like reactions, none of which persisted for more than a week, and only 8 of these patients (15%) were treated with a short course of steroids. One patient, whose skin test was negative, had an immediate anaphylactic reaction to ERIG that responded to parenteral therapy with epinephrine and hydrocortisone sodium succinate. Standard intravenously administered immune globulin (IVIG) contains varying amounts of group B streptococcus (GBS) antibody. A GBS hyperimmune IVIG was produced by immunizing plasma donors. The GBS type-specific opsonic activity was > or = 90% in the hyperimmune IVIG at a 1280 dilution-1 versus at a 10 dilution-1 in standard IVIG.
