Previous reports of endocrine activity of glomus jugulare tumors have been of pheochromocytomas but not carcinoid apudomas. This paper is to alert the otolaryngologist to the presence of carcinoid apudomas in glomus jugulare tumors. A patient with a long history of explosive diarrhea, facial flushing, and violent headaches, the symptom of carcinoid syndrome, was cured after removal of his large glomus jugulare tumor. The diagnosis of carcinoid syndrome is made with a good history and confirmed with a 24 hour urine collection for 5 Hydroxy indole acetic acid (5 Hiaa). a series of patients treat

In summary, MR imaging characteristics of a case of paraganglioma of the facial nerve are reported. The relationship of paragangliomas and the chromaffin system have been discussed. There are many reports of cases of synchronous paragangliomas and pheochromocytomas. These reports, along with simultaneous involvement in familial MEN syndromes, and the common embrylogic origin (neural crest) and similar histopathologic relationships between paragangliomas and pheochromocytoma, all support the fact that they are part of the chromaffin system.

BACKGROUND: Glomus tumor is a benign and vascular hamartoma that originates from the neuromyoarterial cells of the normal glomus apparatus in the reticular dermis. The etiology of glomus tumors is unknown. It usually presents as a small, slightly raised, bluish or pinkish-red, painful nodule of the fingertips and the pulp. we report an atypical case of a patient of painless glomus tumor.
CASE PRESENTATION: Our patient, a 60-year-old Moroccan man, had a 2.5 cm purplish painless soft tumor, covered with melliciric and hemorrhagic crusts, involving the first phalanx of his right index finger. Th…

We report the case of a glomus tumor originating in the left main bronchus diagnosed in a 79 year old Caucasian man. A glomus tumor is an extremely rare neoplasm in the bronchi with nonspecific clinical features. Bronchoscopy allows the diagnosis through biopsy and subsequent histopathological examination of the tissue and in selected cases may represent a valid alternative to surgery permitting a radical tumor excision.

There is discussed case of malignant paraganglioma with cervical lymph node metastasis that was complicated by mistake during peroperative histology. Peroperative histological examination revealed metastasis of medular carcinoma of thyroid gland. Total thyroidectomy was performed. Postoperative histological assessment revealed metastasis of carotic paraganglioma. Tumour was resected together with carotic arteries. Their reconstruction was performed during second procedure.

A 50-year-old woman had had tenderness of the nail bed of the right thumb for more than 20 years. For the previous 5 or 6 years, she had als … erosion in the distal phalanx. Surgery was performed. Histologically, the diagnosis of a subungual glomus tumor was made. We diagnosed the exact location and size of the subungual glomus tumor by preoperative imaging and completely removed it easily and safely. Imaging is very useful for diagnosing tumors of the nail unit.

Giant glomus tumors pose a challenge to the Otologist by virtue of their location and vascularity. A vast majority of them present with tinnitus, conductive hearing loss and cranial nerve palsies. We report the case of a 16-year-old male patient who presented with sudden right-sided sensorineural hearing loss. This is an unusual presentation of a giant glomus tumor. We present the clinical features and management of this unusual case.

Surgical removal of a huge glomus jugular tumor has been considered as one of the most difficult skull base surgeries not only because of the difficulty in approaching the tumor, but also because of its highly vascular nature and various possible postoperative complications. We used combined infratemporal fossa and lateral suboccipital approach in a single stage to operate on a 49-year-old male with a huge glomus jugular tumor, which extended from the right cerebellopontine angle to the level of the the third vertebra. With this approach we could expose the tumor extensively and control the fe

Glomus tumor is a rare mesenchymal tumor composed of perivascular glomus bodies. The most common presentation area of these tumors is peripheral soft tissue, particularly in the distal part of extremities. They rarely can occur in the gastrointestinal tract and the most common location is the stomach. Preoperative diagnosis of this tumor can be difficult because of rarity and overlapping features with other mesenchymal lesions with regard to clinical and pathological findings. Therefore, to exclude differential diagnosis and make a definitive diagnosis is possible only with histopathological e…

BACKGROUND: We evaluated toxicity and long-term efficacy of stereotactic radiosurgery in patients with symptomatic or progressive glomus jugulare tumors.
METHODS: Twenty-five consecutive patients (age, 30-88 years; 17 women, 8 men) who underwent stereotactic radiosurgery with the Leksell Gamma Knife (dose, 12-18 Gy) were prospectively followed. MRI and clinical examinations were performed at 6 months and 1, 2, and 3 years, and then every 2 years.
RESULTS: None of the tumors increased in size, 17 were stable, and 8 decreased (median imaging follow-up, 35 months; range, 10-113 months). Symptom
