OBJECTIVE: to analyse a large series of patients with initial diagnosis of chronic otitis media (COM) with a polypoid mass in the external ear canal (EAC).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 185 consecutive patients with COM were evaluated; 75 showed a polypoid mass in the EAC.
RESULTS: In 65 out of the 75 (86.7%) patients, histological examination after mastoidectomy revealed cholesteatoma. In the remaining 10 (13.3%) cases, the histological diagnosis was: glomus tumor, melanoma, mucosal adenoma, fibrous dysplasia, squamous cell carcinoma, adenoma of the endolymphatic sac, encephalocele, and tuberculosi

The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of removing middle ear paragangliomas using an ultrasonic aspirator (UA) through a transcanal, exclusively endoscopic approach. Three consecutive patients undergoing transcanal endoscopic resection of middle ear paragangliomas using an UA were retrospectively studied. The primary outcome measure was achieving gross total tumor resection. Secondary outcomes included postoperative hearing and early convalescence. Two glomus tympanicum tumors and one small glomus jugulare were included, and complete tumor resection was achieved endoscopically i

Glomus tumours of the skull base are rare, but as they present with symptoms of hearing loss and tinnitus they are a clinical entity of which audiologists should be aware. This paper describes the findings of the major series of skull base glomus tumours found in the literature, and notes that the contribution of conductive and sensorineural components varies with tumour classification. The reported incidence of hearing loss and tinnitus in glomus tympanicum and glomus jugulare is reviewed and compared with the Cambridge series, in which two tumours were Fisch type A, four type B, two type C a

Eighty-four patients with chemodectoma of the head and neck presented to the Royal Marsden Hospital between 1949 and 1985. For tumors arising at the skull base (glomus jugulare and glomus tympanicum) 46 were treated with radiotherapy alone resulting in an actuarial local control rate of 73% at 25 years; 13 were treated with surgery plus radiotherapy with no recurrences during a median follow-up of 9 years; 4 had surgery alone but all recurred by 7 years. For tumors of the soft tissues of the neck (carotid body and glomus vagale) 13 were treated with surgery alone with an actuarial control rate

Extra-adrenal paragangliomas (PGOMAs) are rare and can occur anywhere along the sympathetic chain including the carotid body, glomus jugulare, vagal bodies, ganglium tympanicum, larynx, ciliary bodies, organs of Zuckerkandl, urinary bladder, and other locations. These are microscopically identical. The embryological origin is from neural crest cells. One to three percent are reported to be functioning, predominantly secreting norepinephrine. Diagnosis of a functioning PGOMA can be delayed, even when symptoms of catecholamine hypersecretion are present. Furthermore, diagnostic testing and surge

A carotid body tumor is an uncommon tumor that develops from the carotid body. Carotid body tumor, also called paraganglioma, is often benign in nature and mostly found in the neck. They make up 0.5% of all body tumors and resemble glomus jugulare, glomus tympanicum, and pheochromocytoma, which are paragangliomas of the body. We present a case of a 22-year-old male patient who presented to the medical outpatient department with complaints of swelling in the left carotid triangle for 1 month. The patient had hoarseness of voice with odynophagia and dysphagia. We found out the diagnosis of carot

Extraadrenal paragangliomas are tumors of the paraganglion system, usually arising from the carotid bodies, the glomus jugulare, or the glomus tympanicum. These tumors are capable of secreting catecholamines which can cause severe hypertensive crises. This paper reports a case of a patient who suffered a cerebral vascular accident due to hypertension resulting from a catecholamine-secreting infratemporal fossa paraganglioma. Any patient with a history of paroxysmal hypertension, headaches, and palpitations should be evaluated for a catecholamine-secreting tumor. Diagnosis and management of the

The purpose of this study was to determine the efficiency of Multidetector Computed Tomography (MDCT) versus MRI in detection and characterization of paragangliomas and differentiating them from other vascular mimicking conditions in the neck and skull base in comparison with histo-pathological results as a gold standard. A prospective study included 30 patients with vascular neck lesions. They were susceptible for MDCT and MRI for characterization of the nature of the lesions. Histo-pathological evaluation was performed in all lesions for confirmation. As a result of this study included 30 pa

Paragangliomas could be localized from the skull base to the pelvic floor. Tympanic localization represents the most common benign tumor of the middle ear. Diagnosis is based on clinical signs with a great contribution of radiology. A 40-year-old male presented with isolated tinnitus of the right ear evolving for 18 months. Examination revealed a red bulging right-sided tympanic membrane and a conductive hearing loss. Tomodensitometry and Magnetic resonance imagery showed findings in favor of a right jugular tympanic paraganglioma. The tumor was classified type B according to FISCH classificat

The differential diagnosis of a red and/or pulsatile retrotympanic mass includes aberrant internal carotid artery, persistent stapedial artery (PSA), glomus tympanicum, and dehiscent jugular bulb. By recognizing the features of aberrant internal carotid artery and PSA on high-resolution computed tomography, these entities can be assessed by the radiologist. PSA is further classified by type because each type demonstrates a unique set of imaging features in addition to features common to all types. Although rarely encountered, it is important to reliably and consistently detect these anomalies

Glomus tumors (paragangliomas) are rare, usually benign, neuroendocrine tumors that arise from nonchromaffin cells and can be multifocal or familial. They grow slowly, often infiltratively and rarely form metastases. A distinction is made between carotid, jugular, tympanicum and vagal tumors. Depending on the location, clinical symptoms include neck swelling, hearing loss with pulse-synchronous ear noise or cranial nerve failures (IX-XI). Diagnosis is often delayed because of nonspecific symptoms. Diagnostically, tumor expansion and perfusion can be well visualized by color Doppler sonography.

Jugulotympanic paragangliomas were first described approximately 75 years ago. Since that time, there has been considerable evolution in knowledge of tumor biology, methods of classification, and appropriate management strategies. This paper attempts to summarize these gains in information.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the recurrence of head and neck paragangliomas and the factors associated with disease progression after treatment.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
SETTING: Tertiary care center.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In total, 173 adults with 189 paragangliomas (41.3% carotid body, 29.1% glomus jugulare, 19.0% glomus tympanicum, and 10.6% glomus vagale) treated between 1990 and 2010 were evaluated to determine the incidence and risk of recurrence using Cox proportional hazards.
RESULTS: The mean (SD) follow-up duration was 8.6 (9.1) years. The incidence was 2.92 recurr

BACKGROUND: Under the definition "glomus tumors" are often erroneously enclosed neoplasms that are absolutely unlike for origin, location, and behavior. Glomus tumors (GTs) are small but extremely painful skin tumors of mesenchymal origin. GTs derive from the neuromyoarterial glomus in adults of middle-age and are generally benign. Due to their small size, diagnosis is often difficult and patients harboring these tumors usually consult many physicians, including sometimes neurosurgeons. More familiar to neurosurgeons are neoplasms as glomus jugular, glomus vagale, and glomus tympanicum that in

Haemangioma is an extremely rare tumour of the middle ear. A case of a 60-year old woman patient who complained of a hearing loss for about a year, is reported. Microotoscopy showed a blue pulsating mass behind the tympanic membrane. Angiographic and computer-tomographic investigations led to the suspicion of a glomus tympanicum tumour that was removed bitemporally. The histological preparation showed a capillary haemangioma. Only few cases have been reported in the literature of the last few decades. The symptoms may be loss of hearing, pulsating tinnitus, bleeding, pain and, in extreme cases

The effectiveness and safety of angiographic embolization was investigated as a preliminary step prior to surgical excision of glomus tumours in the head and neck region. Embolization was performed in 54 patients presenting with a total of 58 chemodectomas, jugular (n=30), tympanicum (n=24) and caroticum (n=4) between the years 1988 and 2006. Embolization was considered successful if complete occlusion of all tumor-feeding vessels was achieved. The procedure was performed using polyvinylalcohol particles and microcoils and lasted for a median duration of 159 minutes. Complete tumor embolizatio
