Simultaneous Occurrence of Nasal Carcinoma Induced by Enzootic Nasal Tumour Virus-2 (ENTV-2) and Border Disease Virus in Three Goats.

BACKGROUND: Enzootic nasal adenocarcinoma (ENA) is a prevalent neoplastic disease affecting small ruminant populations globally, caused by the enzootic nasal tumour virus (ENTV). Border disease (BD), also affecting small ruminants, causes persistent infection and increases secondary infection risks. METHODS: Post-necropsy tissue samples were routinely processed and stained with haematoxylin and eosin. Histopathological, immunohistochemical and PCR techniques were employed to diagnose ENTV-2 in three goats. Viral RNA extraction and reverse transcription were performed using the WizPrep Viral D

Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae identified as the main aetiological agent of respiratory disease in goats from a case-control study in Savannakhet province of Lao PDR.

Clinical signs of respiratory disease are common in Lao goats. To identify the causative agents involved in this clinical syndrome, a matched case-control study was conducted across 70 smallholder goat holdings in Savannakhet province. Fifty paired nasal swab samples were collected from goats with respiratory signs (cases) and unaffected (control) goats from 27 goat holdings. The majority of cases (84 %) were from goats < 12 months of age. Samples were tested using quantitative PCR assays targeting possible pathogens causing respiratory disease. Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae, the cause of atypical

Genomes and seroprevalence of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus and Nairobi sheep disease virus in Haemaphysalis longicornis ticks and goats in Hubei, China.

Ticks are medically-important arthropods that maintain and transmit numerous emerging viruses. China suffers severely from tick-borne viral diseases such as tick-borne encephalitis and severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), but the background of tick-borne viruses is very limited. Here we report the virome profiling of ticks and goat sera from SFTS-epidemic areas, and serological investigation of SFTS virus (SFTSV) and Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV). Results revealed divergent viruses in ticks and goat sera, including SFTSV and NSDV. Sequence and phylogenetic analyses showed t

A multi-antigenic adenoviral-vectored vaccine improves BCG-induced protection of goats against pulmonary tuberculosis infection and prevents disease progression.

The "One world, one health" initiative emphasizes the need for new strategies to control human and animal tuberculosis (TB) based on their shared interface. A good example would be the development of novel universal vaccines against Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) infection. This study uses the goat model, a natural TB host, to assess the protective effectiveness of a new vaccine candidate in combination with Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine. Thirty-three goat kids were divided in three groups: Group 1) vaccinated with BCG (week 0), Group 2) vaccinated with BCG and boosted 8 we

[Determination of the optimal immunizing dose of heterologous goat pox virus vaccine (Poxviridae: Chordopoxvirinae: Capripoxvirus) against lumpy skin disease].

INTRODUCTION: Lumpy skin disease (LSD), sheep pox and goat pox are dangerous diseases of domestic ruminants. Representatives of the genus of capripoxviruses are antigenically similar and can be used as a vaccine for three infections, as in the case of representatives of the genus of orthopoxviruses, which includes viruses of smallpox, monkeypox, and cowpox, that all belong to a single family Poxviridae. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, the vaccine strain G20-LKV of the goat pox virus and the virulent strain RIBSP2019/K of the LSD virus were used. The experiments were carried out on clini

A lumpy skin disease virus deficient of an IL-10 gene homologue provides protective immunity against virulent capripoxvirus challenge in sheep and goats.

Sheep and goat pox continue to be important livestock diseases that pose a major threat to the livestock industry in many regions in Africa and Asia. Currently, several live attenuated vaccines are available and used in endemic countries to control these diseases. One of these is a partially attenuated strain of lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV), KS-1, which provides cross-protection against both sheep pox and goat pox. However, when used in highly stressed dairy cattle to protect against lumpy skin disease (LSD) the vaccine can cause clinical disease. In order to develop safer vaccines effectiv

Development of a Synthesized Gene Unique to Lumpy Skin Disease Virus and Its Application in Serological Differentiation of Naturally Infected from Vaccinated Cattle with Attenuated Goat Pox Vaccine.

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is an important infectious disease caused by lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) in bovine. LSDV, sheep pox virus (SPPV), and goat pox virus (GTPV) from the same genus Capripoxvirus (CaPV) of the Poxviridae family exhibit a nucleotide sequence similarity of up to 97%. Therefore, attenuated vaccines of GTPV and SPPV are often used to vaccinate cattle against LSD. However, available serological testing methods cannot accurately differentiate cattle vaccinated with GTPV from those infected with LSDV, posing a significant risk for disease spread. In this study, we developed a

Public health hazards from small ruminant meat products in Europe.

Foodborne diseases, in particular those related to meat and meat products, have recently become a matter of great public concern. Sheep and goat meat can transmit infections and diseases either through handling during preparation procedures or as a result of ingestion by the consumer. The authors highlight the second route of contamination in relation to meat and meat products from small ruminants in European countries. Among the most important diseases transmitted by mutton and goat meat, toxoplasmosis remains the greatest threat, particularly in immuno-compromised people and in pregnant wome

State-of-the-art review of goat TSE in the European Union, with special emphasis on PRNP genetics and epidemiology.

Scrapie is a fatal, neurodegenerative disease of sheep and goats. It is also the earliest known member in the family of diseases classified as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) or prion diseases, which includes Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), and chronic wasting disease in cervids. The recent revelation of naturally occurring BSE in a goat has brought the issue of TSE in goats to the attention of the public. In contrast to scrapie, BSE presents a proven risk to humans. The risk of goat BSE, however, is difficult to evaluate, as our kno

Availability of a fetal goat tongue cell line ZZ-R 127 for isolation of Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) from clinical samples collected from animals experimentally infected with FMDV.

The availability of the fetal goat tongue cell line ZZ-R 127 for the isolation of Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) has not been evaluated using clinical samples other than epithelial suspensions. Therefore, in the current study, the availability of ZZ-R 127 cells for the isolation of FMDV was evaluated using clinical samples (e.g., sera, nasal swabs, saliva, feces, and oropharyngeal fluids) collected from animals experimentally infected with an FMDV isolate. Virus isolation rates for the ZZ-R 127 cells were statistically higher than those for the porcine kidney cell line (IB-RS-2) in experi

Determining the decreasing trend of maternal immunity against small ruminant morbillivirus in goat kids.

BACKGROUND: Small ruminant morbillivirus (SRMV) is the etiological agent of Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) disease. PPR is one of the most important viral diseases of small ruminant husbandry. In the endemic countries, vaccination is the main way to control this disease. Administering the first PPR vaccine in goat kids requires decreased maternal immunity. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the decreasing trend of maternal immunity against SRMV in goat kids born from vaccinated goats. METHODS: Twenty Saanen goat kids were studied in two groups including control (n = 5, recei

[Improvement of the productivity of goats in the periurban zone of N'Djamena (Chad). Choice of measures following an ecopathological inquiry].

A goat herd follow-up and an ecopathological survey on respiratory diseases were undertaken in Chad. Late puberty and high mortality were highlighted by the follow-up. Diseases were frequent and depended on the season. Few risk factors of respiratory diseases were shown by the ecopathological survey. Mortality was connected with 3 parasitic and infectious factors. Decreasing the age at puberty and the mortality rate are priorities. Measures to achieve these aims are well known. They must be set up within a development program, in interaction with research, for a good use by the goat farmer.

A Modular Customizable Ligand-Conjugate (LC) System Targeting Ghrelin O-Acyltransferase.

Ghrelin is a 28 amino acid peptide hormone that impacts a wide range of biological processes, including appetite regulation, glucose metabolism, growth hormone regulation, and cognitive function. To bind and activate its cognate receptor, ghrelin must be acylated on a serine residue in a post-translational modification performed by ghrelin O-acyltransferase (GOAT). GOAT is a membrane-bound O-acyltransferase (MBOAT) responsible for the catalysis of the addition of an octanoyl fatty acid to the third serine of desacyl ghrelin. Beyond its canonical role for ghrelin maturation in endocrine cells w

Dairy goat production and the importance of gastrointestinal strongyle parasitism.

In recent years, demand for goat products has increased in both developing and developed countries. Goat production (particularly dairy), however, is negatively affected by several factors, including infectious and parasitic diseases. Among the latter, gastrointestinal strongyle infection remains one of the main constraints to dairy goat production. In this mini-review, we emphasize the negative influence of these parasites, associated with subclinical production losses and depressive impacts upon long-term animal productivity, as well as the scarcity of studies on this topic. Finally, the nec

Goat Bile Acid and Clostridium butyricum Exert a Synergistic Effect in Enhancing the Therapeutic Efficacy Against Diarrhea Induced by Escherichia coli Infection.

The goat industry is a pivotal livestock sector in China, but bacterial diseases severely restrict its sustainable development and production efficiency. Antibiotic overuse in goat farming causes adverse effects and food safety risks, highlighting the urgent need for safe and effective antibacterial functional feed additives. Bile acids are endogenous cholesterol metabolites with hepatoprotective, antioxidative, and intestinal barrier-enhancing functions. They directly inhibit pathogenic Escherichia coli by disrupting bacterial membrane structure and indirectly suppress pathogen colonization v
