Spontaneous dissection of the external iliac artery secondary to golf club manufacturing.

Spontaneous dissection of the external iliac artery in the absence of aortic disease is extremely uncommon. We report the conservative treatment of a 46-year-old male patient who presented with acute left lower limb ischemia due to an isolated dissection of the external iliac artery secondary to repetitive swinging movements during golf club manufacturing. Although syndromes of nonatherosclerotic vascular disease secondary to repetitive movements in high-level athletic activity have been previously described in cyclists, long distance runners, and rugby players, we believe this to be the first

Republication of "Keeping It in the Fairway: Golf Handicap Following Total Ankle Arthroplasty".

BACKGROUND: Total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) provides a surgical alternative to tibiotalar arthrodesis when treating end-stage ankle arthritis. TAA preserves range of motion at the tibiotalar joint leading to improved postoperative function. Many patients who undergo TAA wish to maintain a high level of activity, including participation in low-impact sports such as golf. There are several studies in the total hip and total knee arthroplasty literature that have looked at the effect of total joint arthroplasty on golf handicap. We hypothesized that similar to hip and knee arthroplasty research, T

Vertebral Artery Dissection in a Woman Due to Golf: An Under Recognized Etiology.

INTRODUCTION: Traditionally, spontaneous cervical artery dissections have been associated with violent, sudden neck movements. These events are a significant cause of stroke related morbidity, particularly in young people. Only a handful of cases of golf-induced vertebral artery dissection (VAD) have been described, and the discussion has primarily focused on middle-aged men. Despite the discussion focused on this demographic, women are participating in golf at higher rates than ever before, and have a higher risk for developing VAD. CASE REPORT: A 41-year-old woman presented to our hospital

The golf ball sign: arthroscopic localization of an osteochondritis dissecans lesion of the knee.

We report on the arthroscopic treatment of a 12-year-old boy diagnosed with an osteochondral defect of the medial femoral condyle. He underwent arthroscopic fixation of the defect, and during the surgery, a blunt trocar was used to localize the lesion. The trocar created a transient dimpling effect on the cartilage overlying the osteochondral defect that resembled the surface of a golf ball. This "golf ball sign" then served as a visual guide during placement of a chondral dart. When present, it is believed that this sign can benefit arthroscopists by helping to improve intraoperative localiza

A Case of Chromium Contact Dermatitis due to Exposure from a Golf Glove.

Chromium is a transition metal and has been shown to elicit contact dermatitis. Although leather products have been known to be the most significant source of chromium exposure these days, the majority of reports have been related to exposure from shoe products. We herein report a professional golfer who became allergic to golf gloves made of chromium-tanned leather. A 27-year-old woman golfer presented with recurrent, pruritic, erythematous plaques that had been occurring on both hands for several years. The lesions developed whenever she had worn golf gloves for an extended period of time, e

Biomechanics of the golf swing in players with pathologic conditions of the forearm, wrist, and hand.

Golf is an activity generally stressful to the hands and wrists and particularly can produce increasing symptoms in players with underlying problems such as hand and wrist arthritis or tendinitis. The purpose of this study was to quantitate wrist motion and club head/ball impact force in subjects with pathologic conditions of the hand, wrist, or forearm, within a laboratory environment. A regular straight-handled golf club was compared to a new BioCurve handle design that has a 19 degrees ulnar bend. We measured and compared the effect of the two grips on wrist motion, club head velocity, ball

Effects of golf training on cognition in older adults: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Although research indicates that a physically active lifestyle has the potential to prevent cognitive decline and dementia, the optimal type of physical activity/exercise remains unclear. The present study aimed to determine the cognitive benefits of a golf-training programme in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: We conducted a randomised controlled trial between August 2016 and June 2017 at a general golf course. Participants included 106 Japanese adults aged 65 and older. Participants were randomly assigned to either a 24-week (90-120 min sessions/week) golf-training grou

Golf-associated head injury in the pediatric population: a common sports injury.

OBJECT: Golf-related injuries constitute a common type of sports injury in the pediatric population. The increase in the frequency of these injuries is largely attributed to the increase in the popularity of golf and greater use of golf carts by children. METHODS: The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanisms and complications associated with golf-related injuries in the pediatric population and, by doing so, assist in the prevention of such injuries. We reviewed the charts of 2546 pediatric patients evaluated by the neurosurgery service at the authors' institution over a 6-year

The mechanism of fatal cardiopulmonary injury caused by a blow from a golf club.

In the course of a scuffle, a youth of 18 years was struck a single blow across the chest with a golf club. He collapsed dead on the spot. At autopsy, a precisely located and highly distinctive patterned imprint abrasion of the precordial region was revealed providing an excellent match with the weapon. The heart showed multiple internal ruptures and there was a laceration of the lingula of the left lung. Injury to the chest wall was confined to the soft tissues, the rib cage and sternum being intact. We postulate a novel mechanism to explain the cardiac rupture.

Long-term intensive golf training induces reconfiguration of brain structural covariance networks.

Long-term motor training is thought to reshape brain organization, yet how golf expertise influences large-scale brain networks remains unclear. Using T1-weighted MRI and an individualized structural covariance network (SCN) approach, we compared 20 expert golfers, 20 novice golfers, and 20 non-golfer controls. Experts showed higher global clustering coefficient and local efficiency than novices, indicating enhanced modular processing. At the nodal level, experts exhibited increased clustering in regions supporting visual-sensorimotor integration (e.g., right supramarginal gyrus, Heschl's gyru

MODIFYING STANCE ALTERS THE PEAK KNEE ADDUCTION MOMENT DURING A GOLF SWING.

BACKGROUND: The knee joint is one of the most frequently injured regions in the game of golf, and the loads experienced by the knee during the golf swing are typically greater than during other activities of daily living. Altering movement patterns is a common strategy that can be used to reduce loading on the knee joint but has received little attention during studies of the golf swing. The primary aim of this study was to examine the effect altering golf stance has on the lead limb peak external knee adduction moment. STUDY DESIGN: Laboratory based, quasi-experimental. METHODS: Twenty heal

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from epoxy resin in a golf club repairman.

A golfer presented with facial and hand eczema. He had exacerbations of his hand eczema prior to golf tournaments. Being an authorized golf club repairman, he had been working with a two-part glue containing an epoxy resin (ER) based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and the hardener diethylenetriamine (DETA) for approximately 4 years before he developed any skin problems. He was patch-tested with the standard, which contains an ER based on DGEBA (DGEBA-R), epoxy (containing DETA), and rubber glove series and had positive reactions to DGEBA-R only. Other work materials (a latex glove,

Nutrient load generated by storm event runoff from a golf course watershed.

Turf, including home lawns, roadsides, golf courses, parks, etc., is often the most intensively managed land use in the urban landscape. Substantial inputs of fertilizers and water to maintain turf systems have led to a perception that turf systems are a major contributor to nonpoint source water pollution. The primary objective of this study was to quantify nutrient (NO(3)-N, NH(4)-N, and PO(4)-P) transport in storm-generated surface runoff from a golf course. Storm event samples were collected for 5 yr (1 Apr. 1998-31 Mar. 2003) from the Morris Williams Municipal Golf Course in Austin, TX. I

One-year follow-up study on golf injuries in Australian amateur golfers.

BACKGROUND: Considering its popularity, little epidemiologic literature exists on golf injuries. HYPOTHESIS: The low back is the most common injury location for golf-related injury. Most golf injuries occur as a result of the golf swing, and occur mostly at impact. The variables age, handicap, practice habits, and warm-up habits are associated with injury. METHODS: A prospective survey over 1 year was used to study golf injuries among 588 golfers at 8 Australian golf clubs. Information collected included golfers' injuries sustained during the year, location of injury, onset, mechanism of inj

Reinforcement Learning-Based Golf Swing Correction Framework Incorporating Temporal Rhythm and Kinematic Stability.

Accurate golf swing correction requires modeling not only static pose deviations but also temporal rhythm and biomechanical stability throughout the swing sequence. Most existing pose-based approaches rely on frame-wise similarity and therefore fail to capture timing, velocity transitions, and coordinated joint dynamics. This study proposes a reinforcement learning-based framework that generates frame-level corrective motions by formulating swing correction as a sequential decision-making problem optimized via Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO). A multi-term reward function is designed to inte

Novel golf prosthesis for bilateral upper limb loss: design, fabrication, and biomechanical evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with bilateral upper limb loss face substantial barriers to independence and recreational participation. Adaptive sports can enhance psychological and physical well-being, yet few prosthetic devices are specifically designed or biomechanically evaluated for use in adaptive sports. Golf demands coordinated motion, stability, and dynamic control, often exceeding the capabilities of most traditional prostheses. Custom prosthetic solutions remain essential for enabling meaningful participation. This study aimed to design, fabricate, and evaluate a custom golf prosthesis f

Does tDCS Enhance Complex Motor Skill Acquisition? Evidence from a Golf-Putting Task.

UNLABELLED: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) modulates cortical excitability, thus inducing improvements in motor learning of simple tasks. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of different tDCS conditions-anodal stimulation over the motor cortex (M1), anodal and cathodal stimulation over the prefrontal cortex (PFC), and sham-on the online and offline learning of a complex accuracy task (golf-putting) in novice golfers. METHODS: A total of 40 young, healthy subjects (24 men, 16 women) without previous golf experience were randomly distributed in four groups receiving s

[Cervical cord infarction associated with unilateral vertebral artery dissection due to golf swing].

A-68-year-old man experienced nuchal pain and bilateral shoulder weakness that occurred suddenly after he performed a golf swing. He was conscious. His cranial nerves were normal, but bilateral deltoid and biceps muscle strengths weakened. Magnetic resonance image (MRI) showed no brain stem infarctions or cervical epidural hematoma. We tentatively diagnosed him with concussion of the spinal cord because of mild recovery of his bilateral upper limb weakness after several hours; he was later discharged. The next day, he suddenly developed serious tetraplegia and was admitted to the emergency dep

Biomechanical parameters of the golf swing associated with lower back pain: A systematic review.

Low back pain (LBP) is the most common injury in golfers of all abilities. The primary aim of this review was to improve understanding of human golf swing biomechanics associated with LBP. A systematic review using the PRISMA guidelines was performed. Nine studies satisfying inclusion criteria and dually reporting golf swing biomechanics and LBP were identified. Human golf swing biomechanics potentially associated with LBP include: reduced lumbar flexion velocity; reduced transition phase length; reduced lumbar torsional load; earlier onset of erector spinae contraction; increased lumbar later
