High-grain diet-induced ruminal acidosis triggers systemic inflammation and serum metabolic reprogramming in dairy cows.

High-grain diets are widely used to meet the energy demands of high-producing dairy cows; however, excessive grain intake predisposes cows to ruminal acidosis and subsequent systemic inflammation, compromising health and productivity. This study aimed to characterize systemic inflammatory responses and associated serum metabolic alterations induced by high-grain feeding. Fourteen mid-lactation dairy cows fitted with permanent rumen fistulas were subjected to a gradual increase in dietary corn grain to induce ruminal acidosis. Blood samples were collected under normal and acidosis conditions; i

OsDDM1b Controls Grain Size by Influencing Cell Cycling and Regulating Homeostasis and Signaling of Brassinosteroid in Rice.

Snf2 family proteins are the crucial subunits of chromatin-remodeling complexes (CRCs), which contributes to the biological processes of transcription, replication, and DNA repair using ATP as energy. Some CRC subunits have been confirmed to be the critical regulators in various aspects of plant growth and development and in epigenetic mechanisms such as histone modification, DNA methylation, and histone variants. However, the functions of Snf2 family genes in rice were poorly investigated. In this study, the relative expression profile of 40 members of Snf2 family in rice was studied at certa

Nutritional quality and in vitro digestion of immature rice-based processed products.

Rice is commonly consumed as fully mature grain, but immature rice is considered to have better nutrient and technological properties. This is attributed to changes in content and profile of nutritional and functional compounds during maturation. This study assessed the effect of maturity on nutrient content of rice grains, and in vitro digestibility of starch and protein, for immature rice grains of TXD306 and Lawama varieties. The effect of processing of immature rice into so-called pepeta, traditionally produced from immature rice grains and widely consumed in Tanzania, was studied as well.

Physiological and Transcriptome Analyses Provide Insights into the Response of Grain Filling to High Temperature in Male-Sterile Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Lines.

High-temperature (HT) stress frequently affects the early and middle stages of grain filling in hybrid seed production regions. Photo-thermo-sensitive male-sterile (PTMS) wheat lines, which play a critical role as female parents in hybrid seed production, face challenges under HT conditions. However, the mechanisms governing grain filling in PTMS lines under HT stress remain poorly understood. This study used the BS253 line to investigate the effects of HT on grain filling, primarily focusing on the transition from sucrose unloading to starch synthesis. The findings indicated that HT significa

The effect of vinblastine on the incorporation of [3H]-glycine into proteins of the periodontal ligament of impeded and unimpeded mouse incisors.

The effect of vinblastine on the protein metabolism of the periodontal ligament of impeded and unimpeded mouse incisors was studied by [3H]-glycine labelling and radioautography. The silver-grain concentration was determined in areas adjacent to the tooth, areas adjacent to bone and, as an internal control, in the dentine matrix. From 1 to 12 h there was no difference between treated and control animals; thus the drug did not alter protein biosynthesis. Later, the silver-grain concentration was significantly higher in areas adjacent to both bone and tooth in vinblastine-treated animals, sugges

Detection of IgE- and IgG-binding proteins after electrophoretic transfer from polyacrylamide gels.

An electrophoretic technique for transferring proteins to a nitrocellulose membrane has been applied to proteins separated in polyacrylamide gels by isoelectric focusing, and gradient, SDS and 2-dimensional electrophoresis. Allergenic proteins were then identified by successive incubation of the transfer membrane with serum from allergic individuals and with 125I-labelled anti-human IgE, followed by autoradiography. Alternatively, IgG binding proteins were detected using 125I-labelled protein A. The application of these methods was illustrated with cereal grain proteins and sera from individua

OsDUF3615 regulates grain size and quality traits by modulating cell proliferation and starch metabolism in rice.

Domains of Unknown Function (DUFs) are widely distributed across diverse genomes and are increasingly recognized as important regulators of plant growth, development, and stress responses. DUF3615 is a highly conserved plant-specific protein motif; however, its biological function remains largely unknown. Previously, the gene OsGAPC3, a key regulator of grain quality, was isolated and functionally characterized in rice. Transcriptome analysis during the dissection of the OsGAPC3-mediated regulatory pathway revealed that OsDUF3615 is significantly upregulated in Osgapc3 mutants, suggesting its

Genome-wide association study reveals that different pathways contribute to grain quality variation in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor).

BACKGROUND: In sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), one paramount breeding objective is to increase grain quality. The nutritional quality and end use value of sorghum grains are primarily influenced by the proportions of tannins, starch and proteins, but the genetic basis of these grain quality traits remains largely unknown. This study aimed to dissect the natural variation of sorghum grain quality traits and identify the underpinning genetic loci by genome-wide association study. RESULTS: Levels of starch, tannins and 17 amino acids were quantified in 196 diverse sorghum inbred lines, and 44 traits

Localization and speciation of mercury in brown rice with implications for pan-Asian public health.

Cultivation of paddy rice for human consumption is a dominant agricultural activity throughout Asia. High levels of mercury (Hg) in rice grain pose a potential threat to human health, although the extent of risk is dependent on the chemical speciation of Hg inside the grain. We have investigated the speciation and localization of Hg in three fractions of rice grain (hull, bran, and white rice) collected from a Hg-contaminated region in China. On a mass basis, the majority of inorganic mercury (IHg) in a rice grain is found in hull and bran. However, the majority of the more toxic species methy

Soybean grain production and nutritional quality responses under elevated CO2, high temperature, and drought.

Soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) is an important global crop that supplies protein and oil for the food and feed industries. However, its yield and nutritional quality are increasingly affected by climate change. This study combines experimental data with predictive modeling to assess how elevated CO2 (eCO2), high temperature, and drought (either alone or combined) influence soybean grain production and composition. Plants were grown under controlled conditions simulating future climate scenarios, and biochemical traits, including carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and amino acids, were analyzed.

Identification of Rice m6A Methyltransferase Complex Subunits MTA/MTB and Their Effects on Heading Date and Grain Weight.

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is a vital epitranscriptomic modification that regulates plant development and stress responses. In rice (Oryza sativa L.), the identity of the catalytic subunit (MTA) of the core m6A writer complex has remained controversial because of inconsistent annotations based primarily on sequence homology. Here, phylogenetic analysis identified LOC_Os02g45110 as the putative catalytic subunit OsMTA, whereas LOC_Os01g16180 and LOC_Os03g05420 were classified as the structural subunits OsMTB1 and OsMTB2, respectively. All three proteins showed nuclear enrichment. Yeast two-hybrid

YSL3-mediated copper distribution is required for fertility, seed size and protein accumulation in Brachypodium.

Addressing the looming global food security crisis requires the development of high-yielding crops. In agricultural soils, deficiency in the micronutrient copper significantly decreases grain yield in wheat (Triticum aestivum), a globally important crop. In cereals, grain yield is determined by inflorescence architecture, flower fertility, grain size, and weight. Whether copper is involved in these processes, and how it is delivered to the reproductive organs is not well understood. We show that copper deficiency alters not only the grain set but also flower development in both wheat and its r
