Synergistic effects of warming and elevated CO2 intensify drought impacts on grassland carbon and water fluxes.

Understanding how rising carbon dioxide (CO2), climate warming, and drought interact to alter ecosystem functioning is critical for predicting future ecosystem resilience and land-atmosphere feedbacks. Using a long-term grassland experiment, we tested the individual and combined effects of elevated CO2 (eCO2), warming, and drought on ecosystem functional properties, including water vapor and CO2 fluxes, and water- and carbon-use efficiency (WUE and CUE, respectively). While eCO2 and warming had limited effects individually, their interaction synergistically amplified ecosystem respiration and

Aboveground biomass estimation in a grassland ecosystem using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and machine learning algorithms.

The grassland ecosystem forms a critical part of the natural ecosystem, covering up to 15-26% of the Earth's land surface. Grassland significantly impacts the carbon cycle and climate regulation by storing carbon dioxide. The organic matter found in grassland biomass, which acts as a carbon source, greatly expands the carbon stock in terrestrial ecosystems. Correct estimation of above ground biomass (AGB) and its spatial and temporal changes is vital for determining the carbon cycle of the grassland. Datasets from multiple sources were fused to accomplish the objective of the study. The Sentin

Phenological stage-dependent hierarchical responses mediate extreme drought impacts on carbon fluxes of a semiarid grassland.

Ecosystem carbon balance is influenced by plant phenological stage-dependent hierarchical responses. However, the molecular and physiological mechanisms that underlie extreme drought-induced alterations in these responses, as well as their cascading effects on carbon fluxes in semiarid grasslands, remain unresolved. Extreme drought was imposed during the green-up, peak growing season, and senescence phase in a semiarid grassland. We measured plant genes, photosynthetic physiology, phenological phase, and CO2 fluxes at molecular, individual, community, and ecosystem levels, respectively. The hi

Quadrat-based monitoring of desert grassland vegetation at the Jornada Experimental Range, New Mexico, 1915-2016.

The data set covers a 101-yr period (1915-2016) of quadrat-based plant sampling at the Jornada Experimental Range in southern New Mexico. At each sampling event, a pantograph was used to record the location and perimeter of living plants within permanent quadrats. Basal area was recorded for perennial grass species, canopy cover area was recorded for shrub species, and all other perennial species were recorded as point data. The data set includes 122 1 × 1 m permanent quadrats, although not all quadrats were sampled in each year of the study and there is a gap in monitoring from 1980 to 1995.

Genetic Diversity and Spatial Genetic Structure of the Grassland Perennial Saxifraga granulata along Two River Systems.

Due to changes in land use, the natural habitats of an increasing number of plant species have become more and more fragmented. In landscapes that consist of patches of suitable habitat, the frequency and extent of long-distance seed dispersal can be expected to be an important factor determining local genetic diversity and regional population structure of the remaining populations. In plant species that are restricted to riparian habitats, rivers can be expected to have a strong impact on the dynamics and spatial genetic structure of populations as they may enable long-distance seed dispersal

Bot fly parasitism (Rogenhofera bonaerensis) (Diptera, Cuterebridae) in the pampean grassland mouse (Akodon azarae), in Argentina.

Seasonality and impact of parasitism by the larvae of Rogenhofera bonaerensis (Diptera: Cuterebridae) in pampean grassland mouse (Akodon azarae, Rodentia, Cricetidae) populations were studied in grasslands and cropfield borders near Diego Gaynor (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina), from November 1985 to December 1986. Trapped mice infections ranged from one larva (77%) to four (4%) per host; larvae occurred on tails (75.7%), backs (17.1%), thighs (5.7%), and abdomen (1.4%). Prevalence of larvae occurred in late spring (November and December) (35%), and in fall (March to June) (20%), with a peak

Soil Warming Shifts Seasonal and Soil Depth-Related Root Growth Dynamics in Subarctic Grasslands.

Climate warming in northern ecosystems is accelerating, yet the responses of belowground growth dynamics under warming remain poorly understood. We assessed how soil warming affects seasonal root growth dynamics in subarctic grasslands, aiming to predict belowground responses under future climate scenarios. We investigated root growth across soil depths and seasons in geothermally warmed subarctic grasslands, comparing two warming durations: medium-term (MTW; 11-14 years) and long-term (LTW; > 60 years) and three warming magnitudes (ambient: +0°C, < +2°C, and > +2°C). Root length and projectio

A Decade of Rainfall Manipulation Reveals Growing-Season Aridity as a Key Determinant of Grassland Productivity and Stability.

Warming-driven intensification of the hydrological cycle is altering global rainfall patterns. However, the relative importance of changes in the amount versus timing of rainfall and the role of atmospheric drivers of moisture demand in modifying relationships between rainfall, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are currently unresolved. To address this, we undertook a 10-year rainfall manipulation experiment in a mesic grassland in New South Wales, Australia. We used rain shelters to achieve five rainfall treatments: (i) ambient, (ii) ambient +50% (IA), (iii) ambient -50% (RA), (iv) reduc

Modelling ruminant grazing systems based on native grasslands. 2. Evaluation of the animal dynamics module.

Ecological intensification of beef cow-calf systems on native grasslands requires quantitative tools that link herbage condition, animal physiology, and management at the whole-farm level. We present and evaluate the animal dynamics module of PAmpa Sustainable grAzing Livestock Management (PASpALuM), a farm-scale model developed for high-diversity Pampas grasslands. The module simulates individual animal herbage intake, energy balance, BW, body condition score (BCS), and reproduction as functions of herbage height, management practices, and weather. Herbage height and BCS are used as key, farm

Effects of biotic homogenization on community assembly and biomass production in an α × β-diversity grassland experiment.

Various studies have shown that local loss of plant species within patches (i.e., α-diversity loss) hampers plant biomass production, raising concerns about the consequences of biodiversity loss. However, biodiversity loss occurs at multiple spatial scales, and species losses at large spatial scales (γ-diversity loss) can be either caused by α-diversity loss, or by the homogenization of species compositions across patches (β-diversity loss). Yet, we poorly understand the consequences of β-diversity loss for ecosystem functioning. Here, we present the findings of the first study to experimental

Tick infestation of birds in grasslands experiencing woody plant encroachment in the United States Great Plains.

Woody plant encroachment is one of the largest threats to grasslands of the US Great Plains. Its spread, mainly due to fire suppression, affects entire ecosystems, including arthropod vectors, bird communities, and the ecology of vector-borne disease. Eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana), one of the primary encroaching species in this region, is known to increase abundance of pathogen-carrying tick species such as Amblyomma americanum; however, the role birds play in carrying ticks in association with eastern redcedar encroachment is unknown. In areas of Oklahoma representing 3 stages of ea

Temporal foraging strategy of lactating beef cows grazing native subtropical grassland differing in herbage allowance and intake.

We study the effect of herbage allowance (HA, High HA vs. Low HA, 5 vs. 3 kg DM/kg BW respectively) on temporal foraging strategy during lactation (40±12 d after calving) in two years using 34 cows equipped with automatic behavior recorders during herbage intake assessment. Herbage mass (HM), and its chemical composition were assessed, while daily grazing (GT, min/d) and ruminating time (RT min/d) were monitored and expressed relative to herbage intake (DMI) in kg/cow/day. The number of feeding stations (FeSt) per minute and bites/FeSt were recorded by direct observation for 30 min/d in two to

Supply-demand coordination of soil conservation services and its driving mechanism in grassland ecosystems of northern China.

Soil erosion poses a persistent threat to grassland ecosystems and sustainable land management; previous large-scale assessments focused on soil conservation supply but ignored its alignment with long-term spatially heterogeneous erosion pressure. This disconnect limits the ability to diagnose where and why soil conservation services fail to meet ecological needs. In this study, a 24-year long-term dataset that integrated multi-source remote sensing, land-use data, and erosion modeling was leveraged to quantify the soil conservation supply and erosion pressure and analyze their coordination ac

Association between previous days open and production performance in older Holstein cows under Swiss grassland-based systems.

The objectives of the present study were to investigate the association between previous days open (PDO) and subsequent lactation performance in the older Holstein cows managed under Swiss grassland-based dairy production systems. We hypothesized that excessively extended PDO in older Holstein cows would be negatively associated with subsequent 305-d lactation performance. A retrospective cohort study was conducted including 879,978 cow-lactations from lactations 3 (L3; n = 412,898), 4 (L4; n = 284,391), and 5 (L5; n = 182,689) across 21,335 Swiss dairy farms. Each cow-lactation contributed an

Divergent group-specific pathways of microbial diversity and network complexity maintain soil multifunctionality during alpine grassland restoration.

INTRODUCTION: Soil microorganisms maintain ecosystem multifunctionality, yet the group-specific pathways linking microbial diversity, community assembly, and network complexity to soil multifunctionality (SMF) during natural restoration of abandoned alpine grasslands remain unclear. METHODS: We examined artificial grassland (AG) and 3-, 12-, and 31-year abandoned grasslands (AB03, AB12, and AB31) in Bayinbuluk, Xinjiang, and analyzed bacterial, fungal, and protistan diversity, community assembly, and co-occurrence networks in relation to SMF. RESULTS: SMF was significantly higher at AB12 and

Reduced legacy precipitation decreases microbial community growth efficiency and alters soil organic carbon in a California grassland.

BACKGROUND: Changes in global patterns can leave a lasting legacy in semiarid grasslands by reshaping microbial growth dynamics and carbon cycling during the first wet-up in the autumn-a period known for intense microbial activity and significant carbon emissions. To study the lasting impacts of decreased winter rain, we implemented two precipitation regimes (100% vs. 50% mean annual precipitation) in California Mediterranean-climate grassland field plots. After the dry season, soils were rewetted in the laboratory with H218O and sampled at 0 h, 3 h, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, and 168 h post rewet. We

Nitrogen addition level is more influential to aboveground productivity than nitrogen addition frequency in an alpine grassland.

AIMS: The combined effects of climate change and human activities have greatly increased atmospheric nitrogen deposition globally, with profound impacts on plant growth and grassland productivity. This study investigates the mechanisms governing how plant aboveground productivity responds to nitrogen addition with varied addition levels and frequencies in Bayanbulak alpine grassland. METHODS: A field experiment was conducted with five N addition levels (0, 5, 10, 15, 20 g·m-2) and two frequencies (low and high). Soil properties, plant aboveground biomass and nutrient content were analyzed usi

Enhanced rock weathering in grassland: Impacts of basalt dust on hay meadow soil, forage, and floristic diversity.

Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) is a promising carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technique with agricultural co-benefits, though its efficacy in grasslands remains largely unexplored. Permanent grasslands, such as hay meadows, can support high floristic diversity, but their agronomic and biodiversity responses to surface-applied silicate rock dusts are unknown. To address this, 50 t ha-1 basalt rock dust was spread on a floristically rich (>28 vascular plant species, ∼ 25 m-2), mildly acidic (pH = 6.35) upland hay meadow in the UK, and its effects on soil chemistry and plant diversity were studied.

Molecular insights into atmospheric methane-oxidizing USCγ from desert grassland soil based on metagenome-assembled genome analysis.

Upland Soil Cluster Gamma (USCγ) is a key high-affinity aerobic methanotroph driving atmospheric methane oxidation in grassland soils; however, it has never been obtained in pure culture, and its metabolic processes remain largely unknown. Here, we reconstructed a USCγ metagenome-assembled genome (MAG) containing the complete pmoA gene from desert grassland soil in northwestern China, designated USC_AKS. At the site, USCγ accounted for 9.83% of the microbial community in the 10-20 cm layer. BLASTn of its 16S rRNA gene against the NCBI database (excluding uncultured/environmental sequences) sho
