Static configurations and nonlinear waves in rotating nonuniform self-gravitating fluids.

The equilibrium states and low-frequency waves in rotating nonuniform self-gravitating fluids are studied. The effect of a central object is included. Two-dimensional static configurations accounting for self-gravity, external gravity, and nonuniform rotation are considered for three models connecting the pressure with the mass density: thermodynamic equilibrium, polytropic pressure, and constant mass density. Explicit analytical solutions for equilibrium have been found in some cases. The low-frequency waves arising due to the vertical and horizontal fluid inhomogeneities are considered in th

Effect of Risks, Consequences, and Gravitational Priors on Sensorimotor Coordination: Insights from Weightlessness.

When manipulating objects, our brain continuously adjusts grip force (GF) to the variations in load force (LF) generated by our own movements. GF-LF coordination provides a window into the predictive capabilities of the brain. To better understand how gravity influences these predictions, we analyzed grip dynamics and movement kinematics in astronauts (two females, nine males) manipulating objects on the ground (in 1G) and during spaceflight in a stable weightless environment (in 0G). We found that the imprint of gravity remains visible in the way we manipulate objects even after months of liv

Flowers meet Newton: testing the role of gravitational pull in resupination of orchid flowers.

Resupination refers to the developmental orientation changes of flowers through ~180°, leaving them effectively upside-down. It is a widespread trait present in 14 angiosperm families, including the Orchidaceae, where it is a gravitropic phenomenon actively controlled by auxins. Here, we demonstrate that the passive gravitational pull on flower parts can have an additional influence on resupination. We studied a lady's slipper orchid in which some flowers naturally fail to resupinate. We conducted a manipulative experiment removing floral parts and showed that both the probability of complete

Multi-objective optimization of hybrid energy systems using gravitational search algorithm.

The depletion of fossil fuel reserves, increasing environmental concerns, and energy demands of remote communities have increased the acceptance of using hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES). However, choosing an optimal HRES from economic, environmental, reliability, and sustainability aspects is still challenging. To solve this challenge, this study introduces a novel multi-objective optimization approach using the Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) and non-dominated sorting techniques. The proposed framework addresses four objectives: minimizing the loss of power supply probability, red

Squeezing the quantum noise of a gravitational-wave detector below the standard quantum limit.

The Heisenberg uncertainty principle dictates that the position and momentum of an object cannot be simultaneously measured with arbitrary precision, giving rise to an apparent limitation known as the standard quantum limit (SQL). Gravitational-wave detectors use photons to continuously measure the positions of freely falling mirrors and so are affected by the SQL. We investigated the performance of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) after the experimental realization of frequency-dependent squeezing designed to surpass the SQL. For the LIGO Livingston detector, we

Prone positioning redistributes gravitational stress in the lung in normal conditions and in simulations of oedema.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? How does the interaction between posture and gravity affect the stresses on the lung, particularly in highly inflated gravitationally non-dependent regions, which are potentially vulnerable to increased mechanical stress and injury? What is the main finding and its importance? Changes in stress attributable to gravity are not well characterized between postures. Using a new metric of gravitational stress, we show that regions of the lung near maximal inflation have the greatest gravitational stresses while supine, but not while prone. I

Validation of a Gravitational Model to Study Local Endogenous Biomarkers in Chronic Venous Insufficiency.

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: Unlike most systemic chronic diseases, chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is ideal to study using endogenous biomarkers. The stimulus causing damage can be turned on and off with gravitational positioning and venous blood samples can be taken locally. Annexin V (apoptosis) and microparticles (cell membrane debris) were used as markers of cell destruction, with matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) as markers of tissue remodelling. The aim of this proof of concept study was to validate a gravitational model by investigating whether standing induced biochemical stress and whethe

Gravitational valves: relevant differences with different technical solutions to counteract hydrostatic pressure.

Two different technical principles of gravitational valves (G-valves) have been presented: counterbalancer and switcher G-valves. The objective of our prospective study was to look for clinically relevant differences between both. A total of 54 patients with normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) were treated; 30 patients received an Aesculap-Miethke GA-Valve (GAV; counterbalancer), and in 24 patients an Aesculap-Miethke Dualswitch-Valve (DSV; switcher) was implanted. The opening pressure of the posture-independent valve was 5 cm H2O in both devices. The outcome was clearly better with the usage

[The effect of pikamilon and fenibut on the blood supply of the brain at rest and under gravitational exposures].

The effects of Picamilonum, 10 mg/kg, and Phenibutum, 50 mg/kg, on the cerebral blood flow, oxygen saturation and vascular reactivity in the cerebral cortex, thalamus, and hypothalamus were studied at rest during antiorthostatic hypokinesia and while rocking in antiorthostasis. Picamilonum was shown to have more steady vasodilatory effect, but it decreased a cerebrovascular response to CO2 and O2 inhalation. The reactivity of cerebral vessels to antiorthostasis under the influence of the drugs inversed, that of cerebrovascular vessels to CO2 inhalation decreased. Picamilonum enhanced vasoconst

Gravitational Waves from a Dilaton-Induced, First-Order QCD Phase Transition.

We show that a QCD dilaton field, whose vacuum expectation value sets the strong coupling, can render the quantum chromodynamic (QCD) confinement transition first order. The QCD dilaton is cosmologically attracted to a false vacuum at weak coupling in the early Universe. Quantum tunneling toward the true vacuum triggers prompt chiral symmetry breaking and confinement of QCD, leading to detonating bubbles of the hadronic phase. We find that plasma sound waves produced by this dilaton-induced, first-order QCD phase transition generate a stochastic gravitational wave signal strikingly similar to

Timelike Thin-Shell Evolution in Gravitational Collapse: Classical Dynamics and Thermodynamic Interpretation.

This work explores late-time gravitational collapse using timelike thin-shell methods in classical general relativity. A junction surface separates a regular de Sitter interior from a Schwarzschild or Schwarzschild-de Sitter exterior in a post-transient regime with fixed exterior mass M (ADM for Λ+=0), modelling a vacuum-energy core surrounded by an asymptotically classical spacetime. The configuration admits a natural thermodynamic interpretation based on a geometric area functional Sshell∝R2 and Tolman redshift, both derived from classical junction conditions and used as an entropy-like coar

Methylcellulose enhances resolution in gravitational field-flow fractionation: Going beyond viscosity.

Gravitational Field-Flow Fractionation (GrFFF) is an elution-based method designed for the separation of particles ranging from a few micrometers up to approximately 100 μm in diameter. Separation occurs over time, with particles being fractionated based on size and other physico-chemical properties. GrFFF takes advantage of gravitational forces acting perpendicularly to a laminar flow in a thin channel. The fluid exhibits a parabolic velocity profile, with the maximum velocity at the center of the channel and zero velocity at the walls. The exit time of particles depends on their equilibrium

Attitude-Orbit Coupled Control of Gravitational Wave Detection Spacecraft with Communication Delays.

In order to meet the position and attitude requirements of spacecrafts and test masses for gravitational-wave detection missions, the attitude-orbit coordination control of multiple spacecrafts and test masses is studied. A distributed coordination control law for spacecraft formation based on dual quaternion is proposed. By describing the relationship between spacecrafts and test masses in the desired states, the coordination control problem is converted into a consistent-tracking control problem in which each spacecraft or test mass tracks its desired states. An accurate attitude-orbit relat

Unsupervised Noise Reductions for Gravitational Reference Sensors or Accelerometers Based on the Noise2Noise Method.

Onboard electrostatic suspension inertial sensors are important applications for gravity satellites and space gravitational-wave detection missions, and it is important to suppress noise in the measurement signal. Due to the complex coupling between the working space environment and the satellite platform, the process of noise generation is extremely complex, and traditional noise modeling and subtraction methods have certain limitations. With the development of deep learning, applying it to high-precision inertial sensors to improve the signal-to-noise ratio is a practically meaningful task.

Navigation of Microrobots by MRI: Impact of Gravitational, Friction and Thrust Forces on Steering Success.

INTRODUCTION: Magnetic resonance navigation (MRN) uses MRI gradients to steer magnetic drug-eluting beads (MDEBs) across vascular bifurcations. We aim to experimentally verify our theoretical forces balance model (gravitational, thrust, friction, buoyant and gradient steering forces) to improve the MRN targeted success rate. METHOD: A single-bifurcation phantom (3 mm inner diameter) made of poly-vinyl alcohol was connected to a cardiac pump at 0.8 mL/s, 60 beats/minutes with a glycerol solution to reproduce the viscosity of blood. MDEB aggregates (25 ± 6 particles, 200 [Formula: see text]) we

Getting ready for Mars: How the brain perceives new simulated gravitational environments.

On Earth, we are continually exposed to gravity: sensory signals are constantly integrated to form an internal model of gravity. However, it is unclear whether this internal model is fixed to Earth's gravity or whether it can be applied to a new gravitational environment. Under terrestrial gravity, observers show a "gravitational bias" while judging the speed of falling versus rising objects, as they comply with the physical laws of gravity. We investigated whether this gravitational bias may be present when judging the speed of objects moving upwards or downwards in both virtual reality (VR)-

PROSAIKA: a prospective multicenter registry with the first programmable gravitational device for hydrocephalus shunting.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) overdrainage is a major problem in shunt therapy for hydrocephalus. The adjustable gravitational valve proSA allows for the first time a targeted compensation for overdrainage in the upright position without interfering with the differential pressure valve. To evaluate benefit, safety and reliability, the multicenter prospective registry PROSAIKA was conducted in 10 German neurosurgical centers. METHODS: Between March 2009 and July 2010, 120 hydrocephalic patients undergoing first time shunt implantation or shunt revision using proSA entered the study. 93
