Regulation of statoconia mineralization in Aplysia californica in vitro.

Statoconia are calcium carbonate inclusions in the lumen of the gravity-sensing organ, the statocyst, of Aplysia californica. The aim of the present study was to examine the role of carbonic anhydrase and urease in statoconia mineralization in vitro. The experiments were performed using a previously described culture system (Pedrozo et al., J. Comp. Physiol. (A) 177:415-425). Inhibition of carbonic anhydrase by acetazolamide decreased statoconia production and volume, while inhibition of urease by acetohydroxamic acid reduced total statoconia number, but had no affect on statoconia volume. A universal scaling framework for granular asteroid strength and its application to the surface of asteroid Bennu.

Granular asteroids exhibit surprising structural stability despite low gravity and high spin rates. Understanding the mechanisms behind their strength is essential for predicting their evolution and informing deflection strategies. Using 3D particle-dynamics simulations, we develop a scaling framework for the tensile strength of cohesive, self-gravitating regolith, examining how particle size and shape jointly control macroscopic behavior. We show that tensile strength can be scaled using either an equivalent particle diameter or particle shape, the latter through sphericity and its reference

Semicircular canal biomechanics in health and disease.

The semicircular canals are responsible for sensing angular head motion in three-dimensional space and for providing neural inputs to the central nervous system (CNS) essential for agile mobility, stable vision, and autonomic control of the cardiovascular and other gravity-sensitive systems. Sensation relies on fluid mechanics within the labyrinth to selectively convert angular head acceleration into sensory hair bundle displacements in each of three inner ear sensory organs. Canal afferent neurons encode the direction and time course of head movements over a broad range of movement frequencie

The neural representation of postural control in humans.

Lesion of the "vestibular cortex" in the human posterior insula leads to a tilted perception of visual vertical but not to tilted body posture and loss of lateral balance. However, some stroke patients show the reverse pattern. Although their processing of visual and vestibular inputs for orientation perception of the visual world is undisturbed, they push away actively from the ipsilesional side (the side of lesion location), leading to a contraversive tilt of the body (tilt toward the side opposite to the lesion) and falling to that side. Recently, the origin of contraversive pushing was ide

A model for vestibular function in altered gravitational states.

During evolution, the vestibular organ was made to serve mainly two purposes: 1) to guide eye movements during sharp turns, so that the point of fixation in the visual field can be kept steady, a function accomplished by the semicircular canal system and 2) to indicate the terrestrial vertical, so that upright posture and gait can be maintained even in the dark. The otolith system serves the latter purpose. Since the function of the semicircular canal system does not depend on gravity, it is not grossly disturbed by gravitational levels different from 1 g. The proper function of the otolith sy

Resting discharge patterns of macular primary afferents in otoconia-deficient mice.

Vestibular primary afferents in the normal mammal are spontaneously active. The consensus hypothesis states that such discharge patterns are independent of stimulation and depend instead on excitation by vestibular hair cells due to background release of synaptic neurotransmitter. In the case of otoconial sensory receptors, it is difficult to test the independence of resting discharge from natural tonic stimulation by gravity. We examined this question by studying discharge patterns of single vestibular primary afferent neurons in the absence of gravity stimulation using two mutant strains of

Interoceptive posture awareness and accuracy: a novel photographic strategy towards making posture actionable.

Interoception, sometimes referred to as the 'hidden sense,' communicates the state of internal conditions for autonomic energy regulation and is important for human motor control as well as self-awareness. The insula, the cortex of interoception, integrates internal senses such as hunger, thirst and emotions. With input from the cerebellum and proprioceptive inputs, it creates a vast sensorimotor network essential for static posture and dynamic movement. With humans being bipedal to allow for improved mobility and energy utilization, greater neuromotor control is required to effectively stabil

Gene expression in autonomic areas of the medulla and the central nucleus of the amygdala in rats during and after space flight.

During space flight astronauts show vestibular-related changes in balance, eye movements, and spontaneous and reflex control of cardiovascular, respiratory and gastrointestinal function, sometimes associated with space motion sickness. These symptoms undergo compensation over time. Here we used changes in the expression of two immediate-early gene (IEG) products to identify cellular and molecular changes occurring in autonomic brainstem regions of adult male albino rats killed at different times during the Neurolab Space Mission (STS-90). Both direct effects of gravitational changes, as well a

Weight-bearing MR imaging as an option in the study of gravitational effects on the vocal tract of untrained subjects in singing phonation.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of subjects in a supine position can be used to evaluate the configuration of the vocal tract during phonation. However, studies of speech phonation have shown that gravity can affect vocal tract shape and bias measurements. This is one of the reasons that MRI studies of singing phonation have used professionally trained singers as subjects, because they are generally considered to be less affected by the supine body position and environmental distractions. A study of untrained singers might not only contribute to the understanding of intuitive singing function

Accuracy and Precision of the Subjective Visual Vertical According to Age in Adults With/Without Diabetes.

Background/Objectives: Multisensory inputs generate a common gravity-reference frame, but just the otoliths sense the gravity vector. Graviception is frequently assessed by setting a luminous line to the subjective visual vertical (S.V.V.). Population aging and diabetes prevalence, with insufficient physical activity, imply the need to ponder these factors in clinical assessments. This study aimed to assess S.V.V. accuracy/precision in adults with/without diabetes, according to age, physical activity, and general characteristics. Methods: Participants were 262 adults without diabetes (21-80 ye

Raman spectroscopy as a tool for assessing plant growth in space and on lunar regolith simulants.

Colonization of the Moon and other planets is an aspiration of NASA and may yield important benefits for our civilization. The feasibility of such endeavors depends on both innovative engineering concepts and the successful adaptation of life forms that exist on Earth to inhospitable environments. In this study, we investigate the potential of Raman spectroscopy (RS) in a non-invasive and non-destructive assessment of changes in the biochemistry of plants exposed to zero gravity on the International Space Station and during growth on lunar regolith simulants on Earth. We report that RS can sen

Transcriptional mechanisms of hearing acclimatization to high altitude in rats.

To investigate auditory acclimatization to high-altitude hypobaric hypoxia, we conducted longitudinal transcriptomic analyses in Wistar rats rapidly transported from 500 m to 3,700 m. Auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing and hematoxylin and eosin staining revealed progressive changes, with hearing impairment at 30 days (D30) followed by acclimatization at 60 days (D60). RNA-seq of cochlear tissues identified 1,329 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) during impairment and 1,441 DEGs during acclimatization. STEM analysis linked these temporal patterns to specific biological processes: per

Compact single-photon LiDAR for satellite laser ranging.

Satellite laser ranging (SLR), a cornerstone technology in space geodesy, plays a critical role in satellite orbit determination and Earth gravity field inversion. Here, we developed a compact single-photon LiDAR system for SLR operating at 1550 nm. The system features a bistatic configuration for backscattering noise suppression, an enhanced scan-tracking technique to improve dynamic target detection probability, and an absolute ranging method utilizing chaotic pulse position modulation (CPPM) and the Hough transform. Experimental results demonstrate a static target absolute ranging of 8.56 k

Balance control under different passive contributions of the ankle extensors: quiet standing on inclined surfaces.

Human bipedal stance is often modeled as a single inverted pendulum that pivots at the ankle joints in the sagittal plane. Because the center of body mass is usually maintained in front of the ankle joints, ankle extensor torque is continuously required to prevent the body from falling. During quiet standing, both passive and active mechanisms contribute to generate the ankle extensor torque counteracting gravity. This study aimed to investigate the active stabilization mechanism in more detail. Eight healthy subjects were requested to stand quietly on three different surfaces of 1) toes-up, 2

Subjective somatosensory vertical during dynamic tilt is dependent on task, inertial condition, and multisensory concordance.

To investigate how visual and vestibular cues are integrated for the perception of gravity during passive self-motion, we measured the ability to maintain a handheld object vertical relative to gravity without visual feedback during sinusoidal roll-tilt stimulation. Visual input, either concordant or discordant with actual dynamic roll-tilt, was delivered by a head-mounted display showing the laboratory. The four visual conditions were darkness, visual-vestibular concordance, stationary visual scene, and a visual scene 180 degrees phase-shifted relative to actual tilt. Tilt-indication performa

How changes in vestibular and visual reference frames combine to modify body orientation in space.

The aim of this study was to analyse how changes in vestibular and visual reference frames combine to modify body orientation in space, and to determine the relationship between postural, oculomotor and perceptive parameters. Changes in vestibular and visual references were investigated by comparing controls and vestibular defective patients (Ménière's patients tested before and one week after unilateral vestibular nerve section) under three visual contexts (light with and without vertical and horizontal coordinates, darkness). Unilateral vestibular loss was responsible for postural and percep

Unilateral testing of utricular function.

A modified rotatory chair test is reported in which radial acceleration, generated by eccentric displacement of the subject during constant angular velocity, is exploited as a unilateral stimulation to the otolith organs. During constant angular rate rotation, the test subject is displaced laterally on the rotating turntable by 3.5 cm, so that one labyrinth becomes aligned with the rotatory axis while the second - eccentric - labyrinth is solely exposed to the altered gravito-inertial acceleration (GIA). Previously reported results showed that the direction of the response is independent of th

Vestibular factors influencing the biomedical support of humans in space.

This paper will describe the biomedical support aspects of humans in space with respect to the vestibular system. The vestibular system is thought to be the primary sensory system involved in the short-term effects of space motion sickness although there is increasing evidence that many factors play a role in this complex set of symptoms. There is the possibility that an individual's inner sense of orientation may be strongly coupled with the susceptibility to space motion sickness. A variety of suggested countermeasures for space motion sickness will be described. Although there are no known

Somatosensory graviception inhibits soleus H-reflex during erect posture in humans as revealed by parabolic flight experiment.

The purpose of this study was to investigate how gravity level affects the excitability of the soleus muscle (SOL) motoneuron pool to Ia afferent input while erect posture is maintained in humans. Three healthy male subjects participated in an experiment whereby three different gravity conditions [microgravity (MG), normal gravity (NG), and hypergravity (HG)] were imposed using a parabolic flight procedure. The SOL H-reflex was evoked every 2 s while the subjects kept an erect posture. The stimulus intensity was controlled automatically on a real-time basis by personal computer to induce the c

The otolith vermis: A systems neuroscience theory of the Nodulus and Uvula.

The Nodulus and Uvula (NU) (lobules X and IX of the cerebellar vermis) form a prominent center of vestibular information processing. Over decades, fundamental and clinical research on the NU has uncovered many aspects of its function. Those include the resolution of a sensory ambiguity inherent to inertial sensors in the inner ear, the otolith organs; the use of gravity signals to sense head rotations; and the differential processing of self-generated and externally imposed head motion. Here, I review these works in the context of a theoretical framework of information processing called the in
