Bacterial Diversity and Chemical Ecology of Natural Product-Producing Bacteria from Great Salt Lake Sediment.

Great Salt Lake (GSL), located northwest of Salt Lake City, UT, is the largest terminal lake in the United States. While the average salinity of seawater is ~3.3%, the salinity in GSL ranges between 5-28%. In addition to being a hypersaline environment, GSL also contains toxic concentrations of heavy metals, such as arsenic, mercury, and lead. The extreme environment of GSL makes it an intriguing subject of study, both for its unique microbiome and its potential to harbor novel natural product-producing bacteria, which could be used as resources for the discovery of biologically active compoun

Polychlorinated biphenyls and incident coronary heart disease-related outcomes in Great Lakes fish consumers.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) has been linked to risk factors for cardiovascular disease such as increased inflammation, accelerated atherosclerosis, diabetes, and sex hormone dysregulation. Furthermore, there is increasing evidence suggesting associations between internal dose of PCBs and cardiovascular outcomes. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to investigate longitudinal associations of PCBs with coronary heart disease (CHD)-related outcomes in a cohort of Great Lakes sport fish consumers. METHODS: The Great Lakes Sport Fish Consumer cohort was establish

Concentration and distribution of contaminants in lake trout and walleye from the Laurentian Great Lakes (2008-2012).

Biomonitoring programs for persistent, bioaccumulative, and/or toxic chemicals of concern in fish tissues have been operated by the governments of Canada and the United States in the Great Lakes since the 1970's. The objectives of these programs are to assess concentrations of harmful chemicals in whole body top predator fish as an indicator of ecosystem health and to infer potential harm to fish and fish consuming wildlife in the Great Lakes Basin. Chemicals of interest are selected based upon national and binational commitments, risk assessment, and regulation, and include a wide range of co

Spatial and temporal trends in surface water and sediment contamination in the Laurentian Great Lakes.

Data from recent sediment and surface water surveys have been collated and mapped to illustrate the spatial distribution of contaminants across the entire Great Lakes basin. Information from historical surveys, together with data from surface water monitoring programs in three major connecting channels, has also been collated in order to evaluate temporal trends. In general, Lakes Superior and Michigan exhibited the lowest levels of sediment contamination while Lake Ontario had the highest. Contaminants such as gamma-HCH (lindane) and dieldrin were ubiquitous in surface waters across the entir

Mercury source changes and food web shifts alter contamination signatures of predatory fish from Lake Michigan.

To understand the impact reduced mercury (Hg) loading and invasive species have had on methylmercury bioaccumulation in predator fish of Lake Michigan, we reconstructed bioaccumulation trends from a fish archive (1978 to 2012). By measuring fish Hg stable isotope ratios, we related temporal changes in Hg concentrations to varying Hg sources. Additionally, dietary tracers were necessary to identify food web influences. Through combined Hg, C, and N stable isotopic analyses, we were able to differentiate between a shift in Hg sources to fish and periods when energetic transitions (from dreisseni

Aquatic pollution-induced immunotoxicity in wildlife species.

The potential for chemicals to adversely affect human immunologic health has traditionally been evaluated in rodents, under laboratory conditions. These laboratory studies have generated valuable hazard identification and immunotoxicologic mechanism data; however, genetically diverse populations exposed in the wild may better reflect both human exposure conditions and may provide insight into potential immunotoxic effects in humans. In addition, comparative studies of species occupying reference and impacted sites provide important information on the effects of environmental pollution on the i

[Effect of mud applications on acetate-induced ulcer in albino rats].

The Republic of Kalmykia possesses a great deal of therapeutical peloids awaiting biomedical investigations. Mud formation in Kalmykia is characterized by an intensive accumulation of sulfide salt. Therapeutical peloids form in the Manych Lake region. An experimental murine model of acetate-induced gastric ulcer was used to evaluate the therapeutical efficacy of Manych mud. There was a statistically significant difference in the rate of ulcer healing between the study and control groups.

Mercury, selenium and neurochemical biomarkers in different brain regions of migrating common loons from Lake Erie, Canada.

Common loons (Gavia immer) can be exposed to relatively high levels of dietary methylmercury (MeHg) through fish consumption, and several studies have documented MeHg-associated health effects in this species. To further study the neurological risks of MeHg accumulation, migrating loons dying of Type E botulism were collected opportunistically from the Lake Erie shore at Long Point (Ontario, Canada) and relationships between total mercury (THg), selenium (Se), and selected neurochemical receptors and brain enzymes were investigated. THg concentrations were 1-78 μg/g in liver; and 0.3-4 μg/g in

Whole-genome sequencing reveals a previously unrecognized measles virus cluster in Burundi.

Despite remarkable progress towards measles elimination in Burundi, the country has seen a resurge in cases since 2019. Epidemiological investigations have been performed; however, it remained unclear if all measles cases involved in recent outbreaks were linked or caused by multiple independent events including introductions from other countries. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the genetic diversity and evolution of measles virus (MeV) during the last large MeV outbreak in Burundi in 2024. The study was carried out on oropharyngeal swab samples collected from four nei

Spatiotemporal dynamics of cholera hotspots in the Democratic Republic of the Congo from 1973 to 2022.

BACKGROUND: Since the early 1970s, cholera outbreaks have been a major public health burden in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Cholera cases have been reported in a quasi-continuous manner in certain lakeside areas in the Great Lakes Region. As these cholera-endemic health zones constitute a starting point for outbreaks and diffusion towards other at-risk areas, they play a major role in cholera dynamics in the country. Monitoring the spatiotemporal dynamics of cholera hotspots and adjusting interventions accordingly thus reduces the disease burden in an efficient and cost-effective ma

Blastomyces dermatitidis Septic Arthritis in a Renal Transplant Patient.

Blastomycosis is a rare endemic fungal infection caused by the dimorphic fungus Blastomyces dermatitidis. It is more likely to occur in persons living in areas of the United States and Canada, which border the Ohio and Mississippi River Valleys and the Great Lakes region. Most infections are localized to the lungs, often presenting as acute or chronic pneumonia. Occasionally, patients progress to develop disseminated disease and extrapulmonary infections. Blastomycosis tends to be misdiagnosed initially at clinical evaluation as it is rare and may resemble other common conditions. We present a

Emergence and Evolutionary Response of Vibrio cholerae to Novel Bacteriophage, Democratic Republic of the Congo1.

Cholera causes substantial illness and death in Africa. We analyzed 24 toxigenic Vibrio cholerae O1 strains isolated in 2015-2017 from patients in the Great Lakes region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Strains originating in southern Asia appeared to be part of the T10 introduction event in eastern Africa. We identified 2 main strain lineages, most recently a lineage corresponding to sequence type 515, a V. cholerae cluster previously reported in the Lake Kivu region. In 41% of fecal samples from cholera patients, we also identified a novel ICP1 (Bangladesh cholera phage 1) bacterioph

Improving rural cancer patients' outcomes: a group-randomized trial.

CONTEXT: Significant barriers exist in the delivery of state-of-the-art cancer care to rural populations. Rural providers' knowledge and practices, their rural health care delivery systems, and linkages to cancer specialists are not optimal; therefore, rural cancer patient outcomes are less than achievable. PURPOSE: To test the effects of a strategy targeting rural providers and their practice environment on patient travel for care, satisfaction, economic barriers, and health-related quality of life. METHODS: A group-randomized trial was conducted with 18 rural communities in the north-centr

Organochlorine pesticides in the ambient air of Chiapas, Mexico.

Organochlorine (OC) pesticides were measured in the ambient air of Chiapas, Mexico during 2000-2001. Concentrations of some OC pesticides (DDTs, chlordanes, toxaphene) were elevated compared with levels in the Great Lakes region, while those of other pesticides were not (hexachlorocyclohexanes, dieldrin). While this suggests southern Mexico as a source region for the former group of chemicals, comparably high levels have also been reported in parts of the southern United States, where their suspected sources are soil emissions (DDTs, toxaphene) and termiticide usage (chlordane). Ratios of p,p'

Cutaneous blastomycosis without evidence of pulmonary involvement.

Blastomycosis is an infection that is often associated with recent military, occupational, or recreational activities near damp soil in various endemic regions, including the Great Lakes and major river valleys in the Midwest as well as various overseas regions. In the great majority of cases, the disease presents as a primary pulmonary disease with or without extrapulmonary involvement. We present a case of cutaneous blastomycosis with no evidence of pulmonary or other systemic involvement. With such presentations, the disease is presumed to have spread hematogenously with the asymptomatic or

The Role of the Caspian, Aral and Balkhash Lakes in the Spread and Preservation of Yersinia pestis in Eastern Europe and Central Asia in the 20th and 21st Centuries.

Based on phylogenetic analysis of whole-genome sequencing of Yersinia pestis 2.MED1 strains of the medieval biovar, combined with epizootic, epidemiological, and climatic data over a 100-year period, we have reconstructed the most probable directions of distribution of plague in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) in the 20th and 21st centuries. The data suggest the important role of three great lakes-the Caspian, Aral, and Balkhash-in the circulation and preservation of Y. pestis 2.MED1 in EECA. Three main directions of Y. pestis 2.MED1 expansion have been identified: Caspian (Caspian Sea

Relationship among mercury concentration, growth rate, and condition of northern pike: A tautology resolved?

Methylmercury is a bioaccumulative contaminant that biomagnifies in aquatic food webs and adversely affects the health of freshwater fish. Previous studies have documented an inverse relationship between fish condition and concentration of mercury in fish. However, this relationship may be a result of slow-growing fish accumulating large amounts of methylmercury rather than the effects of methylmercury on fish condition and growth. An evaluation was conducted of the relationship among fish condition, growth, and mercury concentration in northern pike Esox lucius from 26 lakes in the western re

Does Herd Immunity Exist in Aquatic Animals?

Viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus genotype IVb (VHSV-IVb) is presently found throughout the Laurentian Great Lakes region of North America. We recently developed a DNA vaccine preparation containing the VHSV-IVb glycoprotein (G) gene with a cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter that proved highly efficacious in protecting muskellunge (Esox masquinongy) and three salmonid species. This study was conducted to determine whether cohabitation of VHSV-IVb immunized fishes could confer protection to non-vaccinated (i.e., naïve) fishes upon challenge. The experimental layout consisted of multiple flow-throu

Nutrient amendments enrich microbial hydrocarbon degradation metagenomic potential in freshwater coastal wetland microcosm experiments.

UNLABELLED: Biostimulating native microbes with fertilizers has proven to be a highly effective strategy to speed up biodegradation rates in microbial communities. This study investigates the genetic potential of microbes to degrade light synthetic crude oil in a freshwater coastal wetland. Experimental sediment microcosms were exposed to a variety of conditions (biological control, a light synthetic crude oil amendment, and light synthetic crude oil with nutrient amendment) and incubated for 30 days before volatile organic compounds (BTEX) were quantified and DNA was sequenced for metagenomic
