[Etymology of evil : Origin and early development of oncoterminology].

The medical theory of ancient Greece and Rome was substantially shaped by the concept of body fluids. However, the pathology of solid lesions also occupies a firm place in the terminology. Hippocrates and Galen were acquainted with a number of tumours and tumour-like lesions of parenchymal organs. Both primary tumours (phymata, onkoi) as well as secondaries (metastaseis) have been described. On the other hand, the terms neoplasia and neoplasm were not part of the vocabulary of Greek medicine. Organ-related tumours were referred to as cancers. In contrast to carcinoma, sarcoma is terminological

Brief history of the clinical diagnosis of malaria: from Hippocrates to Osler.

Since antiquity, malaria had a major impact on world history but this brief historical overview focuses on clinical features of malaria from Hippocrates to Osler. In antiquity, physicians tried to differentiate malaria from other acute fevers. The classic descriptions of malaria by Hippocrates in ancient Greece and Celsus in ancient Rome are excerpted here from the original Greek and Latin. Their clear clinical descriptions prove malaria was recognized in antiquity. In the modern era, it remains difficult to clinically differentiate malaria from typhoid fever. Since physicians used the term 't

Cystic echinococcosis in Greece. Past and present.

Cystic echinococcosis is a zoonotic disease with a wide geographical distribution, Greece included, and is considered to be a serious problem for the public health and the livestock economy. Although the disease was widespread in Greece since ancient times, cystic echinococcosis was identified as a serious problem around 1970, and since then national surveillance programmes are running, based on meat inspection and stray dogs management. Ever since, there are official records of the parasite's prevalence in humans and livestock which show a continuous decline. More precisely, human hydatidosis

Amphiaraos, the Healer and Protector of Attika.

Amphiaraos was an important and popular healing hero/god in Athens from the end of the fifth century BC, however, not much has been studied. This paper investigates the figure in various ways by examining different sources. In the sixth century BC and in to the fifth, Amphiaraos was an Argive warrior hero that came into war against Thebes. He then seems to have acquired a sanctuary in the Theban territory being a mantic hero. In the end of the fifth century BC, however, he is said to have swallowed up by the earth and sprang up again in a spring at Oropos. Between 420-414 BC, his sanctuary was

The philosopher Socrates had exophthalmos (a term coined by Plato) and probably Graves' disease.

According to a previously published theory, Socrates was afflicted with temporal lobe epilepsy since his childhood. Plato, Xenophon, and Aristoxenus described Socrates as having exophthalmos, probably diplopia, and some symptoms compatible with hyperthyroidism. Using these data, we theorize that Socrates had Graves' disease. In order to determine a cause of his temporal lobe epilepsy, we speculate that the philosopher also had autoimmune thyroiditis and Hashimoto encephalopathy during his childhood and his epilepsy may have been a sequel to this hypothesized encephalopathy.

Medical practice in the ancient Asclepeion in Kos island.

Asclepius was called "a great doctor for every disease". Asclepius was born in Trikala, Thessaly, in the middle of Greece, where the first Asclepeion was established. Patients coming to the Asclepeia were first taking cleaning baths and then entered the main Asclepeion, where they were examined by priests-therapists and were accommodated in certain areas-rooms of the Asclepeion. Inscriptions found in marble plaques describe treatment of some diseases and the sum of money paid for every treatment. These were the first medical records and fees in ancient Greece. Patients were considered as a uni

Useful known and unknown views of the father of modern medicine, Hippocrates and his teacher Democritus.

Hippocrates is considered to be the father of modern medicine because in his books, which are more than 70. He described in a scientific manner, many diseases and their treatment after detailed observation. He lived about 2400 years ago. He was born in the island of Kos and died at the outskirts of Larissa at the age of 104. Hippocrates taught and wrote under the shade of a big plane tree, its descendant now is believed to be 500 years old, the oldest tree in Europe--platanus orientalis Hippocraticus--with a diameter of 15 meters. Hippocrates saved Athens from a plague epidemic and for that wa

[Introduction of Greek medicine to Rome: political and ideologic discord].

The opposition of Cato the Elder and other traditionalists to the introduction of Greek medicine in Rome by Archagathus was the result of several factors: political strife in the Roman nobility, hostility against Greek culture, fear of Archagathus' surgical and pharmaceutical treatments, and loathing for the mercenary character of the medical profession, which was regarded as a sign of luxury.

[Thucydides' syndrome].

The epidemic that broke out in Athens during the Peloponnesian War was certainly one of the biggest disasters described in the history of mankind. In the past numerous scholars have unsuccessfully attempted to identify the aetiological agent of the plague. Two new hypotheses have also recently been put forward but do not fully clarify all the diverse aspects of the plague whose aetiopathogenesis apparently remains a still unsolved problem.

[The great plague of Athens 430 BC].

The plague of Athens in 430-426 BC has puzzled scholars and doctors for generations as to the aetiology of this deadly disease that had profound influence on the outcome of the Great Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC). Like several thousand soldiers and civilians, Pericles succumbed to the plague in 429. The main opponent to Athens was Sparta. Sparta had a formidable land based army, whereas Athens dominated at sea. Pericles' strategy was to shelter the whole of Attica's population within the protecting walls of Athens and Piraeus and the long walls connecting the two cities, while the Spartans ra

Sudden cardiac death: a 2400-year-old diagnosis?

Sudden cardiac death is one of the most important causes of mortality in the modern industrialized world. Although it has been described for at least several centuries, we believe in fact that Hippocrates provided a concise, but historically compelling, description of sudden cardiac death in his Aphorisms II, 41: "Those who are subject to frequent and severe fainting attacks without obvious cause die suddenly." This would be the earliest description of sudden cardiac death known. The Aphorism was analyzed in the context of genuine Hippocratic writings as well as ancient Greek culture. The Apho

["Doghearted" women: the origins of the counting method].

The so called counting-method of contraception was widely used even by the Greeks, though its scientific explanation has been elaborated only in the 1930s by Knaus and Ogino. The Greeks however misunderstood the process of conception and did not follow the periods of humans, but those of other mammals, so their method probably proved to be inefficient. The theory nevertheless, in spite of all experiences, survived for centuries and was still in use even in the 16th century. Author attempts to give an answer to this fact: according to her opinion, based on medical, historical, and literary sour

Hippocrates, the true father of hand surgery.

The methods used by Hippocrates for treating fractures and dislocations formed the basis for further development in operations performed upon the hand. He described the common distal radial fracture, and the method to reduce and immobilize it. Of carpal dislocations, he mentioned two patterns which are similar to the common "anterior dislocation of the lunate" and the "perilunar dislocation." He treated pressure sores and wound infection with frequent dressings, application of heat and mechanical debridement; limb necrosis was treated with delayed amputation, and tetanus, with immediate explor

Caelius Aurelianus (5th century AD) study on worms.

Caelius Aurelianus (5th century AD) translated in Latin the work of Soranus of Ephesus (2nd half of 1st century - 1st quarter of 2nd century AD) On Acute and on Chronic Diseases. In this Latin translation, the 8th chapter of the fourth book of chronic diseases is devoted in worm's infection in children and in adults. This study is the most complete and comprehensive analysis of this special infection of the Greek and Roman antiquity. Historical Vignette on Trepanation: The Evolution of Opening the Skull.

Trepanation, the ancient practice of drilling or scraping a hole into the human skull, is one of the earliest known surgical procedures. Its evolution, from prehistoric times to modern neurosurgery, reflects the development of medical knowledge and surgical techniques, depicting significant progress and cultural variations that have persisted until our modern era. From its origins in Neolithic societies, where it was used for therapeutic and ritualistic purposes, to its refinement in ancient Greece, medieval Europe, and beyond, trepanation has been crucial to the history of medicine. Its legac

The plague of Athens (430-427 BC): Integration of historical, clinical, and ancient DNA data supports an invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella enterica etiology.

The Plague of Athens represents one of the earliest and most detailed descriptions of a large-scale epidemic in recorded history. Emerging in 430 BC during the second year of the Peloponnesian War, it caused extensive mortality, including the death of Pericles, the leader of Athenian democracy at the time. Thucydides, the famous historian, provides an eyewitness account with a rich clinical narrative encompassing symptomatology, complications, mortality rates, epidemic dynamics, post-infection immunity, and animal involvement. In this narrative review, we integrate Thucydides' account with mod
