Visual profiling and vision screening of preschool children in Greenland.

A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted in six towns in Greenland to establish normative data on refraction and visual acuity in preschool children and to develop a practical vision screening method suited to Greenlandic healthcare needs. We recruited 274 children born in 2017 through kindergartens in six towns. The only exclusion criterion was known eye disease under ophthalmological care. Vision screening was performed by an optometrist, assessing distance visual acuity with Kay Pictures, binocular near visual acuity with Lea Symbols, stereoacuity with the Lang II Test, and no…

The first report of meningitis in a Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus).

The Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus) is a large species of shark found in the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans and is believed to be the longest living vertebrate. Relatively little is known about its biology, abundance, health or diseases. In March 2022, only the third reported UK stranding of this species occurred and it was the first to undergo post-mortem examination. The animal was a sexually immature female, measuring 3.96 m in length and 285 kg in weight, and was in poor nutritional state. Gross findings included haemorrhages in the skin and soft tissues, particularly of the he…

Molecular characterization of Blastocystis and Entamoeba of muskoxen and sheep in Greenland.

Molecular characterisation of endobionts that are shared among human and non-human hosts can help shed light on the epidemiology and inform studies that aim to unravel the role of these organisms in health and disease. Two of the most common of shared endobionts include the single-celled intestinal protists Blastocystis and Entamoeba. Here, we present the first known data on genetic diversity and host specificity of these two genera in Greenland. Faecal DNA samples from 243 muskoxen and 44 sheep were submitted to metabarcoding of nuclear small subunit ribosomal DNA. Entamoeba- and Blastocystis…

Increased incidence of gonorrhoea and chlamydia in Greenland 1990-2012.

BACKGROUND: Since the 1970s, Greenland has presented the highest reported incidence rates of the sexually transmitted infections (STIs) gonorrhoea and chlamydia in the Arctic regions. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe sex- and age-specific incidence rates of gonorrhoea and chlamydia from 1990 to 2012 in Greenland, and to evaluate if changes in case definitions, diagnostic procedures and implementation of STI interventions during the period coincide with rate changes. DESIGN: Gonorrhoea and chlamydia cases were identified from the national STI surveillance. For 1990-2008, STI cases were …

Infectious mononucleosis in Greenland: a disease of the non-indigenous population.

Greenland Eskimos have one of the highest incidences of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in the world. Asian and African areas endemic for NPC show early infection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and few cases of infectious mononucleosis (IM). Among 40 000 Eskimos and 10 000 Caucasians in Greenland there were 82 reported cases of IM from 1963 to 1980. Incidence rates from 1975 to 1980, age adjusted to the "world" population distribution, were 12.0 and 5.2/100 000/yr for males and females, respectively. Comparable Danish data revealed incidence rates of 97.4 and 105.1. From 1970 to 1981 Greenland …

Genomic adaptations of novel halotolerant bacteria from extreme North Greenland.

Peary Land, northern-most Greenland, is a cold desert region whose soil microbiome remains underexplored. This is the first study to explore the halotolerant soil microbiome of this region with culture-dependent methods. Forty-nine taxonomically diverse bacterial isolates were obtained from dry soil biocrust, surface soil, and permafrost soil. Nine isolates were selected for whole genome sequencing; these genomes showed adaptations to their cold, saline native environment, such as cold shock proteins and a large number of osmoprotectant transporters. The genomes also contained several biosynth…

Seasonal changes of mélange thickness coincide with Greenland calving dynamics.

Iceberg calving is a major contributor to Greenland's ice mass loss. Ice mélange, tightly packed sea ice and icebergs, has been hypothesized to buttress the calving fronts. However, quantifying the mélange buttressing force from field observations remains a challenge. Here we show that such quantification can be achieved with a single field measurement: thickness of mélange at the glacier terminus. We develop a three-dimensional discrete element model of mélange along with a simple analytical model to quantify the mélange buttressing using mélange thickness data from ArcticDEM over 32 Greenlan…

Alcohol in Greenland 1950-2018: consumption, drinking patterns, and consequences.

Alcohol is the single most important public health challenge in Greenland. We provide an overview of alcohol consumption, drinking patterns, and consequences of excessive use of alcohol in Greenland since 1950 through a synthesis of published results and analyses of population-based interview surveys. The import of alcohol fluctuated over the last 70 years with a peak in the 1980s at 22 litres 100% alcohol per person per year. In 1950 and 2015, the import of alcohol was similar at 8 litres. Several explanations have been put forward to explain the changes including restrictions, increased tax,…

Low prevalence of ciprofloxacin-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Nuuk, Greenland.

During a 35-day period, 32 isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains were collected by culture from patients with positive nucleic acid amplification test results in Nuuk, Greenland, where ciprofloxacin is the preferred treatment. All isolates were quinolone susceptible, suggesting that resistance is rare. Sampling patients for culture before treatment may prove useful in reestablishing surveillance.

Timing of permanent tooth emergence in two Greenland Eskimo populations.

Mean times of emergence of the permanent teeth (except the first and third molars and mandibular central incisors) were studied cross-sectionally in an unmixed East Greenland population in 1957 and in present West Greenland Eskimo children. In spite of differences in racial and environmental conditions, practically no difference was found between the two samples in the timing of dental development in general, taking into account the average difference in emergence times of the individual teeth. Both samples showed advanced dental development in comparison with two unmixed Caucasoid and two unm…

The 1971-72 epidemic of acute viral hepatitis in Godthaab, Greenland.

Viral hepatitis has been known to occur among the Greenland population endemically as well as in smaller and larger epidemics. A large epidemic of acute hepatitis comprising around 9% of the entire population, viz. more than 4000 notified cases, swept through Greenland between October 1970 and December 1972. 996 verified cases were seen in the Godthaab district and subjected to more detailed studies. Most of the Godthaab cases were seen among children and adolescents, and no disease was observed in children less than one year of age. Out of 996 diagnosed cases 9 showed acute hepatic failure wi…

An exploration of aphasia symptom profiles in speakers of Kalaallisut (West Greenlandic).

Research into language disorders such as aphasia and what they can reveal about the cognitive and neural underpinnings of language should be informed by crosslinguistic descriptions. It is particularly important to include languages that are highly dissimilar to widely studied languages like English. Kalaallisut (West Greenlandic) is one such language - a polysynthetic language of the Inuit-Yupik-Unangan language family spoken by approximately 60,000 people in Greenland and Denmark. Previous research has indicated that non-fluent aphasia in Kalaallisut exhibits different features from those fo…

Dynamics of organic matter in algal blooms on the Greenland ice sheet.

Surface melting supports the development of pigmented algal blooms on the Greenland Ice Sheet, decreasing albedo and further accelerating melting. The interplay between carbon-fixing algae and carbon-respiring heterotrophic microorganisms ultimately controls the amount and composition of organic matter (OM) and thus the ice and snow color. Yet, the dynamics of microbially-derived OM on the Greenland Ice Sheet remain unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we incubated in situ algae-dominated snow and ice samples under light and dark conditions and characterized the changes in dissolved and par…

Tonsillotomy by monopolar diathermy as a new procedure in Greenland: a feasibility study.

Tonsillotomy (TT) has emerged as a less invasive alternative to tonsillectomy (TE), associated with lower bleeding risk. In Greenland, where access to ear, nose and throat specialists and emergency care is limited, postoperative bleeding is a significant concern. The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of implementing TT across Greenland. A prospective case series was conducted at one central and two remote healthcare facilities. Children and adults with tonsillar hypertrophy, recurrent or chronic tonsillitis were eligible for inclusion. TT was performed using monopolar diath…

Children with otitis media in Greenland - A qualitative study of parental experiences.

INTRODUCTION: The Greenlandic population has one of the world's highest prevalence of otitis media (OM). Approximately 9-14% of all children suffer from OM during childhood. Due to the climate, lack of infrastructure, and minimal access to specialist services, the Greenlandic healthcare system operates under significant challenges. To support treatment implementation, we explored parental experiences of having a child with recurrent acute otitis media (rAOM) and chronic suppurative otitis media in Greenland (CSOM). METHODS: We applied a qualitative methodology with semi-structured interviews,…

A high frequent BRCA1 founder mutation identified in the Greenlandic population.

Approximately 10% of all breast and ovarian cancers are dominantly inherited and mutations are mainly found in the BRCA 1 and 2 genes. The penetrance of BRCA1 mutations is reported to be between 68 and 92% and confers a 36-92% life time risk of breast cancer. Most mutations in BRCA1 are uniquely occurring mutations, but founder mutations have been described. In this study we describe a founder mutation with wide spread presence in the Inuit population. We have screened 2,869 persons from Greenland for the presence of a BRCA1 mutation (p.Cys39Gly) only found in the Inuit population. The overall…

Suicides in the midnight sun--a study of seasonality in suicides in West Greenland.

Greenland is the most extreme of human habitats in regard to annual changes in natural light. From being very low, the rate of suicides in Greenland has increased during the past few decades to be among the highest in the world. Several studies have shown seasonality in suicides with spring or summer peaks, but this has not been previously shown in Greenland. Official data from 1968 to 1995 from West Greenland were pooled. A significant seasonality in the 833 suicides was found using Rayleigh's test, a peak in June and a trough in the winter. Suicides increased during the period, and reached h…

Outbreak of trichinellosis associated with consumption of game meat in West Greenland.

The Inuit population of the Arctic has always been at risk of acquiring trichinellosis and severe outbreaks have been recorded in Alaska and Canada. In West Greenland, a number of large outbreaks took place during the 1940s and 1950s; they involved total 420 cases including 37 deaths. Since then only sporadic cases have been reported. Here, we describe an outbreak of infection with Trichinella spp. after consumption of infected meat presumably from walrus or polar bear caught in western Greenland. Six persons who had eaten of the walrus and polar bear meat were two males and four females, age …
