Validation of a french assessment of prolonged grief (PG-13-R): Age-by-gender differences in prolonged grief symptoms.

Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) is a persistent form of grief associated with substantial functional impairment. The PG-13-Revised (PG-13-R), aligned with DSM-5-TR criteria, has not been validated in French. This study evaluated its psychometric properties in bereaved adults (N = 1,066; ≥12 months post-loss; 30-day retest n = 270). Following translation, the PG-13-R demonstrated a unidimensional structure, excellent internal consistency (ω=.92), strong test-retest reliability (ρ=.815, p<.001), and expected associations with symptoms of pathological grief (TGI-SR), post-traumatic stress (PCL-5),

Prolonged Grief Disorder: Addressing Misconceptions With Evidence.

There are many misconceptions about Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD). We show with data that PGD is a diagnosis that applies to a rare few of mourners who are at risk of significant distress and dysfunction. Those mourners who meet criteria for PGD have been shown to benefit from specialized, targeted treatment for it. The case against PGD is empirically unsubstantiated, and the need for scientific examination of effective treatments is warranted.

Depressive disorder and grief following spontaneous abortion.

BACKGROUND: Abortion is associated with moderate to high risk of psychological problems such as depression, use of alcohol or marijuana, anxiety, depression and suicidal behaviours. The increased risk of depression after spontaneous abortion in Asian populations has not been clearly established. Only a few studies have explored the relationship between grief and depression after abortion. METHODS: A study was conducted to assess the prevalence and risk factors of depressive disorder and complicated grief among women 6-10 weeks after spontaneous abortion and compare the risk of depression with

Treating complicated grief: effects on sleep quality.

Complicated grief (CG) is characterized by recurrent distressing emotions and intrusive thoughts related to the loss of a loved one and avoidance of reminders of the deceased. Poor sleep quality characterizes CG. Cognitive-behavioral therapy and interpersonal psychotherapy reduce CG symptom severity. The effect of these treatments on sleep quality is not known, however. We investigated whether complicated grief treatments (CGTs) improve sleep quality, as assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Data collected from 95 adults who participated in a randomized controlled trial were reviewed

Coping with transplant failure: grief vs. denial.

A major drawback to kidney transplantation as a treatment for end stage renal disease is the common occurrence of rejection and failure of the transplanted kidney. We evaluated twenty-five dialysis patients, all of whom had suffered transplant failure during a ten year period. Of these, twenty-four had good psychological readjustment to chronic dialysis. Fourteen patients successfully grieved the loss of their kidneys. Ten denied any psychological difficulty in returning to dialysis and did not manifest the usual signs of grief. We suggest that the effectiveness of denial as a coping mechanism

A study on the intervention effect of a structured grief counseling program on grief responses in family caregivers of patients with advanced cancer.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the effect of structured grief counseling on grief responses in family caregivers of advanced cancer patients from the terminal phase through early bereavement, and may inform bereavement care in oncology and hospice settings. METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial from October 2024 to November 2025 among family caregivers of patients with advanced cancer. Participants were assigned to structured grief counseling (intervention group, n = 55) or only psychological materials (control group, n = 56). Counseling began before the death and continued fo

Perinatal Grief Counseling and Its Effect on Grief Levels in Women Who Underwent Pregnancy Termination: A Comparative Experimental Study.

This study was designed as a two-group pre-test post-test comparative experimental study to examine the effects of grief counseling on perinatal grief levels in women who underwent pregnancy termination before discharge from the clinic. This study was conducted with 70 women who underwent medical termination of pregnancy. The intervention group (n = 35) received perinatal grief care, while the control group (n = 35) received only routine hospital care. In this study, the Introductory Information Form, Perinatal Grief Scale, and evaluation form of the care received were completed. While the per

Grieving Assisted Dying: A Synthesised Grief Framework.

The recent legalization of assisted dying (AD) in New Zealand has reshaped experiences of dying and grief, yet AD-related grief remains under-theorised. Guided by the questions of whether particular forms of grief are more prominent at different stages of the AD process, and how these manifestations can inform a grief framework tailored to AD, this qualitative study explores and explains how grief theories apply to AD. Using appreciative inquiry, we interviewed 46 individuals eligible or ineligible for AD and family members. Inductive-deductive thematic analysis identified a distinct AD grief

Peer-led Group Support for Grief Distress.

Despite the wide availability of peer-led grief support groups, there has been limited study of their methodology or outcomes. This pilot study examined a nonclinical sample of 99 adults who self-referred to a peer-led group. This group involved a time-limited, manualized, closed group intervention (Restorative Retelling) that was co-facilitated by peer volunteers. The study documented a low dropout rate from this free service with preimprovement/postimprovement in scores of grief distress as measured by the Prolonged Grief Disorder (PG-13) scale. The peer volunteers were preselected and train

Grief, Bereavement, and Mental Health After Stillbirth.

Following stillbirth, profound grief is well-documented, and co-occurring mental health struggles are common. Distinguishing normal grief from mental health conditions is crucial yet difficult, especially when losses are traumatic. Strong social and emotional support promotes integration and adjustment, but stigma surrounding stillbirth often negatively impacts the degree of support families receive. Many bereaved parents prefer peer-based and animal-assisted supports over conventional clinical services, which may reflect gaps in clinician training in perinatal bereavement care. Accordingly, a

Opioid Epidemic Grief and Characterological Harm Reduction.

This article considers what it might mean to do the moral work of grieving during an opioid epidemic. Becoming callous, bitter, or resentful are harms we can suffer to our characters when grieving losses, especially at epidemic scale. This article suggests how appreciating beauty can play roles in grieving that could help mitigate these harms.

Influences on grief among parentally bereaved adults.

Although the parent-child relationship is significant throughout life, many changes occur as children grow, particularly during young adulthood. Parental loss and resulting grief during adulthood is likely influenced by many variables, including age, gender, relationship quality, and sex roles. In the present study, parentally bereaved adults completed measures assessing parental involvement, personal grief and adjustment, and sex role preferences. Analyses of covariance indicated that gender of the bereaved child was significant in predicting some aspects of grief, wherein females were more s

Panic-agoraphobic spectrum symptoms in complicated grief.

Little is known about the presence and role of subclinical anxiety symptoms and traits in complicated grief (CG). Data from adults with CG (n=28) suggest that they experience more panic-spectrum symptoms (PSS) than bereaved controls (n=44), and that the presence of greater PSS is independently associated with poorer quality of life.

Good grief: staff responses to childbearing loss.

The emotional implications for staff of loss in childbearing have been inadequately addressed. In this paper I focus on maternity situations, but it is necessary to draw on other areas' findings. I address crying by the care provider and its association with staff grief. The conclusion emerges that education is likely to help staff to provide quality care in these most sensitive of sensitive situations.

Let's talk about grief: Protocol of a study on the recognition and psychoeducation of prolonged grief disorder in outpatients with common mental disorders.

BACKGROUND: Recognition that the loss of a loved one may result in prolonged grief disorder (PGD) has gained broad attention recently. PGD may disturb daily functioning to such a degree that mental health treatment is required. Because PGD symptoms often resemble symptoms of common mental disorders (CMD) such as anxiety, depressive, and post-traumatic stress disorder, clinicians may not consider a PGD diagnosis. Moreover, cultural varieties in expression of PGD may complicate recognition. This study explores the prevalence of PGD among both natives and refugees with anxiety, depressive, or tra

Should prolonged grief be reclassified as a mental disorder in DSM-5?: reconsidering the empirical and conceptual arguments for complicated grief disorder.

The proposed changes to DSM-5 will create new categories of mental disorder (referred to here generically as Prolonged Grief Disorder'' [PGD]) to diagnose individuals experiencing prolonged intense grief reactions to the loss of a loved one. Individuals could be diagnosed even if they have no depressive or anxiety symptoms but only symptoms typical of grief (e.g., yearning, avoidance of reminders, disbelief, feelings of emptiness). The main challenge for such proposals is to establish that the proposed diagnostic criteria validly discriminate a genuine psychiatric disorder of grief from intens

Grief processing and deliberate grief avoidance: a prospective comparison of bereaved spouses and parents in the United States and the People's Republic of China.

In this study, the authors measured grief processing and deliberate grief avoidance and examined their relationship to adjustment at 4 and 18 months of bereavement for 2 types of losses (spouse, child) in 2 cultures (People's Republic of China, United States). Three hypotheses were compared: the traditional grief work assumption, a conditional grief work hypothesis, and a view of grief processing as a form of rumination absent among resilient individuals. Although cultural differences in grief processing and avoidance were observed, the factor structure of these measures proved invariant acros

Perceptions and Impact of Grief Among Surgical Trainees.

INTRODUCTION: Grief is an underrecognized yet pervasive occupational exposure in surgical training. Surgical residents routinely encounter patient death, devastating complications, and ethically complex decisions, often without adequate time or institutional structures to process the emotional consequences. Neurosurgery, in particular, may place trainees at heightened risk given the frequency of catastrophic neurological injury and end-of-life care. This study sought to quantify the prevalence, intensity, and correlates of professional grief among surgical trainees. METHODS: An anonymous, cro

Prevalence rates of prolonged grief disorder are overestimated.

Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) has been included in the International Classification of Diseases 11th edition (ICD-11) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR). Accurate assessment of the prevalence of PGD is imperative to healthcare policy and practice. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses of at-risk bereaved subgroups (e.g. those bereaved by natural disasters, unnatural causes, and COVID-19) yield very high prevalence rates (24-87%). These findings appear at odds with the well-established finding that most people respond to major
