Home and health among different sub-groups of the ageing population: a comparison of two cohorts living in ordinary housing in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: At present a majority of older people remain in their ordinary homes. Research has generated knowledge about home and health dynamics and increased the awareness of the complexity of housing as related to ageing. As this knowledge is based mainly on research on very old, single-living people in ordinary housing there is a need to study other sub-groups of the ageing population. Thus, the aim of the present descriptive study was to compare a younger old cohort with a very old cohort living in ordinary housing in Sweden in order to shed new light on home and health dynamics in differ

Constraints to the initiation of home non-invasive ventilation and short-term efficacy in different diagnostic groups (as a prelude to an ambulatory shift).

INTRODUCTION: Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is the reference treatment for chronic respiratory failure (CRF) due to impairment of the ventilatory system. Home initiation is increasingly practiced. To better support this ambulatory shift, we aimed to assess the implementation constraints and short-term efficacy according to different aetiologies of CRF. METHODS: This retrospective study with cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis included patients initiated with NIV at Angers University Hospital. Patients were separated according to the following aetiologies: obesity hypoventilation syndro

Prolonged and large outbreak of invasive group A Streptococcus disease within a nursing home: repeated intrafacility transmission of a single strain.

OBJECTIVES: Multiple invasive group A Streptococcus (GAS) infections were reported to public health by a skilled nursing facility (facility A) in Illinois between May 2014 and August 2016. Cases continued despite interventions including antibiotic prophylaxis for all residents and staff. Two other geographically close facilities reported contemporaneous outbreaks of GAS. We investigated potential reasons for ongoing transmission. METHODS: We obtained epidemiologic data from chart review of cases and review of facility and public health records from previous investigations into the outbreak. I

'I'm happy that I can still walk'--Participation of the elderly in home care as a specific group with specific needs and wishes.

BACKGROUND: Taking the needs, wishes and experiential knowledge of clients into account is considered to result in a better fit between the supply and demand of modern health care, contributing to the improvement of individual care, organizations, institutions and policy. However, the current generation of the elderly have had little experience of consumer-oriented public services. They are said to be less likely to discuss their needs and wishes with individual caregivers and health-care organisations. As a result, they might not receive care matching their needs and wishes. AIM: To examine

Alzheimer's disease patients institutionalized in group homes run by long-term care insurance exhibit fewer symptoms of behavioural problems as evaluated by the Behavioural Pathology in Alzheimer's Disease Rating Scale.

BACKGROUND: The behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) caused by Alzheimer's disease (AD) can burden caregivers. Group homes (GH), small nursing homes, for the elderly with dementia are institutions commonly run by the public long-term care insurance system in Japan. The purpose of this study was to compare the prevalence of BPSD of AD, as evaluated by the Behavioural Pathology in Alzheimer's Disease Rating Scale, between GH patients and community residents. METHODS: A total of 74 patients with AD were enrolled: 37 were patients institutionalized in GH (Hachinski score < 5)

Overcoming barriers to engagement and adherence to a home-based physical activity intervention for patients with heart failure: a qualitative focus group study.

OBJECTIVES: Clinical guidelines recommend regular physical activity for patients with heart failure to improve functional capacity and symptoms and to reduce hospitalisation. Cardiac rehabilitation programmes have demonstrated success in this regard; however, uptake and adherence are suboptimal. Home-based physical activity programmes have gained popularity to address these issues, although it is acknowledged that their ability to provide personalised support will impact on their effectiveness. This study aimed to identify barriers and facilitators to engagement and adherence to a home-based p

Changes in the self-rated well-being of people who move from congregated settings to personalized arrangements and group home placements.

A natural experiment contrasted the self-rated well-being of people with intellectual disabilities ( n = 75) and those with enduring mental health problems ( n = 44) after they moved to new accommodation and support options, while others remained in congregated settings or living in the family home. Most support staff also provided well-being ratings. In personalized arrangements, personal well-being was significantly higher than in congregated settings; particularly for people with intellectual disability who had higher support needs compared to people with mental health problems. Healthy elderly French women living at home have secondary hyperparathyroidism and high bone turnover in winter. EPIDOS Study Group.

It was recently demonstrated that calcium and vitamin D supplements were capable of decreasing the incidence of hip fractures in institutionalized elderly subjects through a reduction of senile secondary hyperparathyroidism. As there are no appropriate data to recommend such a supplement to the elderly living at home, the aim of this study was to determine the incidence of senile secondary hyperparathyroidism in old French women from the general community, its relation to vitamin D status, and its contribution to bone turnover. Four hundred and forty women, aged 75-90 yr, were randomly selecte
