Growth and development in monogenic forms of neonatal diabetes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Neonatal diabetes mellitus (NDM) is a rare disorder in which 80-85% of infants diagnosed under 6 months of age will be found to have an underlying monogenic cause. This review will summarize what is known about growth and neurodevelopmental difficulties among individuals with various forms of NDM. RECENT FINDINGS: Patients with NDM often have intrauterine growth restriction and/or low birth weight because of insulin deficiency in utero and the severity and likelihood of ongoing growth concerns after birth depends on the specific cause. A growing list of rare recessive cause

Growth Restriction and Systemic Immune Development in Preterm Piglets.

Background: Many preterm infants are born with growth restriction (GR) following maternal or fetal complications before birth. Such infants may continue to grow slowly after birth, regardless of birth weight (BW), due to morbidities related to their immature organs. Severe GR increases the susceptibility to infections, but it is not clear if this is a consequence of impaired systemic immunity or other factors, such as prolonged hospital stay or poor mucosal barrier function. Using preterm pigs as models for preterm infants, we hypothesized that moderate GR, exerting limited clinical effects, d

Excess iron: considerations related to development and early growth.

What effects might arise from early life exposures to high iron? This review considers the specific effects of high iron on the brain, stem cells, and the process of erythropoiesis and identifies gaps in our knowledge of what molecular damage may be incurred by oxidative stress that is imparted by high iron status in early life. Specific areas to enhance research on this topic include the following: longitudinal behavioral studies of children to test associations between iron exposures and mood, emotion, cognition, and memory; animal studies to determine epigenetic changes that reprogram brain

Human genetic insights into skeletal development, growth, and homeostasis.

This current study describes how human genetic approaches are used to identify and understand the roles of genes and their protein products, during skeletal development, growth, and homeostasis. Searches for the genes responsible for brachydactyly, symphalangism, spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, and camptodactyly-arthropathy syndrome are presented to exemplify these approaches. The important role of the orthopaedic surgeon in this process is discussed.

Effects of preterm birth on oral growth and development.

Preterm and low birthweight children comprise approximately 6 per cent of all live births. They are prone to many serious medical problems during the neonatal period which may affect the development of oral tissues. The present paper reviews the results of this author's own decade of research into the oral development of preterm children in the light of current understanding of the field. Studies have shown a high prevalence of generalized enamel hypoplasia in the primary dentition of around 40-70 per cent in preterm children which is likely to be associated with low bone mineral stores. The c

Reproductive health, population growth, economic development and environmental change.

World population will increase by 1000 million, or by 20%, within 10 years. Ninety-five per cent of this increase will occur in the South, in areas that are already economically, environmentally and politically fragile. Morbidity and mortality associated with reproduction will be greater in the current decade than in any period in human history. Annually, 40-60 million pregnancies will be terminated and 5-10 million children will die within one year of birth. AIDS-related infections, e.g. tuberculosis, will undermine health care in Africa (and elsewhere) and in places AIDS-related deaths will

[Growth and development in children with congenital heart defects].

Growth and development have been analyzed in 222 children with congenital heart disease. Results were compared to a group of 50 control children. There was no significant difference in age and sex between the groups (p < 0.05). Thirty-three children (12.16%) had cynotic congenital heart disease (tetralogy of Fallot and transposition of the great arteries) and 189 (87.84%) acyanotic congenital heart disease (ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus and aortic and pulmonary stenosis). A statistically significant growth retardation was noted in all children with c

Physical growth and development in patients with Rett syndrome.

Linear growth and sexual development was assessed in 21 girls who fulfilled the clinical criteria of Rett syndrome. Ten (48%) showed growth retardation with length or height below the 5th centile and an additional 8 (38%) had shifted their linear growth downward sometime during the first years of life. All the girls had age-appropriate sexual development with menarche in 6 at a mean age of 11 2/12 years. Early deceleration of linear growth, growth retardation and normal sexual development appear to be useful markers in the clinical definition of Rett syndrome.

Growth and development in children recovering from bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

Of 26 patients with bronchopulmonary dysplasia, 20 (77%) survived and were followed prospectively for two years post-term. Lower respiratory tract infections occurred in 17 of the 20 children (85%), and required hospitalization in ten (50%) during the first and in four (20%) during the second year. At two years post-term only two patients had significant respiratory symptoms at rest, but 78% had residual radiographic changes. The average weight and height at term were at or below the third percentile. Growth occurred at an accelerated rate with improvement of respiratory symptoms, with average

Adverse effects of jejunoileal bypass on growth and development.

Ninety percent jejunoileal bypass was performed in 20 growing (100 gram) male Sprague-Dawley (SD) and 15 male, genetically obese, growing (125 gram) Zucker "fat rats" (FR). Twenty SD and 15 FR unoperated rats of similar age and weight served as controls. Animals were evaluated for weight gain or loss, complications, and survival. At death (4 months), caliper measurements of long bones, vertebral column, pelvis, and skull were obtained, and brain, liver, spleen, and kidneys were excised and weighed. Liver and gonadal histology were obtained. The "fat fat" was more fragile, with a 20 percent ana

Fibroblast growth factor in pancreatic development, homeostasis, and disease.

Pancreatic development is a tightly orchestrated process driven by the concerted action of multiple signaling pathways. Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) serve as pivotal cues across its stages: they engage FGF receptors (FGFRs) to activate downstream ERK/MAPK, PI3K-AKT, and PLCγ cascades, thereby governing pancreatic progenitor proliferation, differentiation, and functional maturation. The spatiotemporal expression of FGFs is precisely coupled to developmental milestones and intertwined with Notch, Wnt, and Hedgehog signaling in a complex regulatory network. This review systematically summariz

Halogenated indoles selectively modulate plant growth and root development.

Indole is a central scaffold in microbiology and also functions as an auxin precursor and signaling molecule in plants. However, the growth-modulating potential of substituted indoles remains largely unexplored. Here, we screened 87 indole and indole-derived compounds for effects on early seedling growth in two Brassicaceae species, radish and Chinese cabbage. Seed germination was largely unaffected, whereas marked variability was observed in total growth and particularly in root development. The parent compound indole strongly promoted seedling growth to approximately 140% relative to the con

Refractive development II: Modelling normal and myopic eye growth.

PURPOSE: During refractive development, eye growth is controlled by a combination of genetically pre-programmed processes and retinal feedback to minimise the refractive error. This work presents a basic differential model of how this process may take place. METHODS: The description starts from two bi-exponential descriptions of the axial power Pax (or dioptric distance) and total refractive power Peye, the difference between which corresponds with the spherical refractive error S. This description is rewritten as an ordinary differential equation and supplemented by a retinal feedback functi

Fundamentals of Interceptive Orthodontics: Optimizing Dentofacial Growth and Development.

Interceptive orthodontics is intended to optimize dentofacial growth and development. This treatment concept attempts to prevent or minimize dental development abnormalities while enabling craniofacial growth modification. Utilizing preventative holistic concepts, it also focuses on habit intervention. Interceptive orthodontics in children entails monitoring for a variety of conditions, including excessive space, severe crowding, open or deep bites, anterior and/or posterior crossbites, severe overjet, and abnormal eruption patterns. This article will review the etiologies of these clinical pr

MicroRNA in skeletal muscle development, growth, atrophy, and disease.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short noncoding RNAs that are important global- as well as tissue- and cell-type-specific regulators of gene expression. Muscle-specific miRNAs or myomirs have been shown to control various processes in skeletal muscles, from myogenesis and muscle homeostasis to different responses to environmental stimuli, such as exercise. Importantly, myomirs are also involved in the development of muscle atrophy arising from aging, immobility, prolonged exposure to microgravity, or muscular and neuromuscular disorders. Additionally, muscle atrophy is both induced by and exacerbates m
