Mucogingival versus guided tissue regeneration procedures in the treatment of deep recession type defects.

The objective of the study was to compare the clinical efficacy of 3 surgical approaches in the treatment of deep recession type defects. Fifty-four (54) gingival recessions > or = 5 mm were randomly assigned to 1 of the 3 treatment groups by blocking the prognostic variables. The first group was treated with a guided tissue regeneration (GTR) procedure using a bioabsorbable membrane, the second with non-resorbable membrane, and the third with a mucogingival surgical approach consisting of a connective tissue graft combined with a coronally advanced flap (bilaminar technique). No differences,

Effect of local metronidazole application on periodontal healing following guided tissue regeneration. Microbiological findings.

The bacteriological colonization of healing periodontal defects was investigated after treatment with guided tissue regeneration using expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membranes together with local metronidazole gel (25%, 250 mg/g). Twelve patients, each with one pair of comparable defects, had the test defect treated with the membrane plus metronidazole gel and the control defect treated with the membrane alone. Thirty weeks after removal of the membrane, the median gain in probing attachment level as a percentage of the initial defect depth was 92% for the test defects and 50% for the contro

Guided tissue regeneration in the treatment of human facial recession. A 12-case report.

A guided tissue regeneration procedure was used to treat human buccal recessions, 3 to 7 mm deep, in 12 patients. No procedure for increasing the width of keratinized tissue was performed prior to treatment. A thick bipedicled flap was raised with a semilunar incision in the alveolar mucosa and a marginal incision was extended to the adjacent papilla. The root surface was made concave by curets and burs to create space for regeneration. The membrane was fixed to the cemento-enamel junction and covered by the flap which consisted of the residual gingiva and of alveolar mucosa. The membranes wer

Guided tissue regeneration versus mucogingival surgery in the treatment of human buccal gingival recession.

A surgical technique involving membranes was used to treat localized human buccal recessions 3 mm to 8 mm. The results on 25 patients (test group) were evaluated 18 months postoperatively and compared with the results obtained in 25 other patients (control group) having undergone mucogingival surgery. In the test group, a trapezoidal flap with a large base was raised beyond the mucogingival junction. The exposed root surface was scaled thoroughly to a concave shape. A membrane was bent and adapted onto the concave root surface. The flap was sutured far coronally and the membrane removed one mo

Tissue-engineered nerve guides with mesenchymal stem cells in the facial nerve regeneration.

Nerve guides with mesenchymal stem cells have been investigated in the rat facial nerve defect model to promote peripheral nerve regeneration and shorten recovery time to improve patients' quality of life. A 7-mm facial nerve gap experimental rat model is frequently employed in facial nerve regeneration studies. Facial nerve regeneration with nerve guides is evaluated by (1) assessing myelinated fiber counts using toluidine blue staining, (2) immunohistological analysis, (3) determining the g-ratio (axon diameter/total outer diameter) of regenerated nerve on transmission electron microscopic i

The influence of membrane exposure on the outcomes of guided tissue regeneration: clinical and microbiological aspects.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of membrane exposure on guided tissue regeneration (GTR). Thirty patients with 2-wall or 3-wall intraosseous defects were treated with GTR. Periodontal index, gingival index, bleeding on probing, probing depth, clinical attachment level and recession were assessed at the baseline examination, as well as immediately prior to and six months after GTR. The numbers of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans on the retrieved expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) membranes were assessed using polymerase chain re

Guided tissue regeneration for the treatment of periodontal intrabony and furcation defects. A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Many clinical studies have demonstrated that guided tissue regeneration (GTR) is a successful treatment modality of periodontal reconstructive surgery and it has become an accepted procedure in most periodontal practices. RATIONALE: The purpose of this structured review was to assess the efficacy of guided tissue regeneration (GTR) procedures in patients with periodontal osseous defects compared with surgical controls on clinical, radiographic, adverse, and patient-centered outcomes. It extends the scope of previous GTR systematic reviews, which were limited to randomized controll

Calcium sulfate combined with guided tissue regeneration: A novel technique in treatment of gingival recessions.

The presence of mucogingival problem around anterior teeth is a challenge to the clinician as not only biological and functional aspects has to be addressed but esthetic aspirations of the patient have to be met. The use of guided tissue regeneration (GTR) procedures for the treatment of gingival recession has shown encouraging results and is gaining clinical acceptance. However, maintenance of space under the membrane remains a problem for clinicians. Hence, this case study was an innovative attempt to evaluate the effect of adjunctive calcium sulfate placement along with collagen membrane GT

Guided tissue regeneration using rigid absorbable membranes in the dog model of chronic furcation defect.

OBJECTIVE: Absorbable membranes are used to promote the regeneration of periodontal defects by Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR). However, their collapse into the defect is commonly reported, impairing regeneration. Therefore, absorbable but rigid membranes aiming at preventing such collapse were developed and analyzed in periodontal regeneration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Membranes were analyzed in class II furcation defects in dogs; procedures included periodontal disease induction, prophylaxis and GTR (treated groups) or open flap debridement alone (control group). For GTR, the membranes were

Locally delivered minocycline and guided tissue regeneration to treat post-juvenile periodontitis. A case report.

A case of post-juvenile periodontitis in a 28-year-old female patient is described along with new periodontal treatment modalities. Administration of minocycline-HCl with local drug delivery system was introduced as a part of initial periodontal therapy following microbiological and immunological examinations. The lesions were subsequently treated by guided tissue regeneration, which resulted in considerable gain of attachment with minimal recession of marginal gingiva. This observation suggests that the local delivery of antibiotics and regenerative therapy may prove to be effective alternati

Guided tissue regeneration in surgically-produced furcation defects. An experimental study in the beagle dog.

The aim of the investigation was to evaluate the potential for new attachment formation at various degree III furcation involvements in the beagle dog. 3 differently shaped furcation defects were prepared; one small and one large key-hole defect, and one furcation defect which was part of "circumferential" loss of attachment and bone. 15 beagle dogs were used in the experiments. The furcation defects were surgically created at mandibular premolars in the right and left side of the jaw. Test teeth were subsequently treated according to the GTR principle, while control teeth were treated without
