BACKGROUND: Shame and guilt are involved in suicidality and in post-traumatic stress disorder. However, few studies have explored the implication of those emotions in the suicidality of patients exposed to traumatic events.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this literature review was to examine the implication of shame and guilt in the suicidality of individuals who have experienced potentially traumatic events or been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. These two emotions are part of post-traumatic stress disorder and suicidality. Moreover, when individuals perceive that their coping st

Recent studies have confirmed a close association between various medical conditions (intracranial aneurysm, abdominal aortic aneurysm, temporal arteritis, autoimmune disorder, renal cysts), certain aortic anatomic variants (bovine aortic arch, direct origin of left vertebral artery from aortic arch, bicuspid aortic valve), and family history of aneurysm disease with thoracic aortic aneurysm and dissection. This paper reviews these associations. We propose to capitalise on these associations as powerful and expanding opportunities to diagnose the virulent but silent disease of thoracic aortic

OBJECTIVE: Knowledge of what predicts relatives' expressed emotion (EE) may contribute to improved family work in schizophrenia. In the present study we examined guilt proneness as a determinant of EE components.
METHOD: In a Norwegian sample of 46 recently hospitalized patients (schizophrenia or schizophreniform disorder) and 69 relatives, relatives' expressed emotion was assessed by means of the Camberwell Family Interview, and guilt proneness by means of the Revised Mosher Guilt Inventory. (RMGI).
RESULTS: Confirmatory multiple regression analyses showed that hostility-guilt (RMGI) was ne

Trauma-related guilt and shame are common following traumatic or potentially morally injurious events. Improving guilt and shame is often a goal of treatment, and providers express a desire for more strategies to manage guilt and shame for individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and moral injury. Evidence-based psychotherapies for PTSD, such as prolonged exposure, cognitive processing therapy, and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy, have been found to improve trauma-related guilt and shame among individuals with PTSD and/or moral injury. This paper provides an

Self-conscious emotions, specifically shame and guilt, are pivotal factors in the onset, maintenance, and treatment of various mental health disorders. While shame involves a devalued sense of the global self and internal/external stigmatization, guilt typically pertains to specific behaviors and the desire for reparation, however it can become problematic when there are inappropriate and excessive attributions of control and responsibility. This virtual issue explores the complex roles these emotions play as both clinical symptoms and barriers within the therapeutic relationship. Through a se

This study investigates risk factors for suicidal ideation among Turkish bereaved adults, focusing on bereavement-related guilt. Utilizing the Prolonged Grief Scale, Bereavement Guilt Scale, and Beck Depression Inventory's suicide item, 570 bereaved participants were assessed. Suicidal ideation prevalence was found to be 20.2%. Higher rates of low income, single status, and unnatural death, as well as younger ages of the bereaved and deceased, were observed in the suicidal ideation group. Additionally, significantly elevated scores on the Prolonged Grief Scale and Bereavement Guilt Scale subsc

Largely cross-sectional evidence indicates that ethical guilt is a robust predictor of childhood aggression. However, the underlying mechanisms of ethical guilt-in part assessed as ethical heart rate (HR) reactivity in the present study-are less clear, and longitudinal associations between ethical guilt, its underlying mechanisms, and aggression have not been explored. The present study used a multicohort longitudinal design to assess these constructs across early and middle childhood. At the beginning of the study and 2 years later, cohorts of 4- and 8-year-olds (ns = 150; N = 300) reported t

Although Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS) have identified many susceptibility loci for common diseases, they only explain a small portion of heritability. It is challenging to identify the remaining disease loci because their association signals are likely weak and difficult to identify among millions of candidates. One potentially useful direction to increase statistical power is to incorporate functional genomics information, especially gene expression networks, to prioritize GWAS signals. Most current methods utilizing network information to prioritize disease genes are based on the '

This study explored the association of shame and guilt with PTSD among women who had experienced intimate partner violence (IPV). Sixty-three women were assessed by a research clinic serving the mental health needs of women IPV survivors. Results indicated that shame, guilt-related distress, and guilt-related cognitions showed significant associations with PTSD but global guilt did not. When shame and guilt were examined in the context of specific forms of psychological abuse, moderation analyses indicated that high levels of both emotional/verbal abuse and dominance/isolation interacted with

Childhood traumatic experiences are associated with the development of self-conscious emotions such as guilt during adolescence; however, the role of gender in this relationship remains insufficiently understood, particularly in Latin American contexts. This study aimed to examine whether gender moderates the relationship between childhood traumatic experiences and guilt in adolescents in Trujillo, Peru. A cross-sectional design was employed with a non-probabilistic sample of adolescents (N = 200). Childhood trauma was assessed using the Child and Adolescent Trauma Screen, and guilt was measur

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Guilt, a complex emotional experience pervading many lives, takes on an intricate form when intertwined with psychiatric conditions. As a multifaceted concept, guilt represents a key diagnostic feature in depression and is an integral part of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). This systematic review aimed to synthesize empirical research on the varied dimensions of guilt across these two mental illnesses, where guilt is emphasized as a pathognomonic factor.
COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS OF DATA: A systematic computer-based literature search was conducted, using a rigorous s

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The shame reaction is a highly negative emotional reaction shown to have long-term deleterious effects on the mental health of clinicians. Prior studies have focused on in-hospital personnel, but very little is known about what drives shame reactions in emergency medical services (EMS), a field with very high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder, burnout, anxiety, and depression. The objective of this study was to describe emotions, processes, and resilience associated with self-identified adverse events in the work of prehospital clinicians.
METHODS: We conducted a quali

This study explored the relation of shame proneness and guilt proneness to constructive versus destructive responses to anger among 302 children (Grades 4-6), adolescents (Grades 7-11), 176 college students, and 194 adults. Across all ages, shame proneness was clearly related to maladaptive response to anger, including malevolent intentions; direct, indirect, and displaced aggression; self-directed hostility; and negative long-term consequences. In contrast, guilt proneness was associated with constructive means of handling anger, including constructive intentions, corrective action and non-ho

OBJECTIVE: Placebo-controlled trials face significant challenges in psychotherapy research due to difficulties in creating credible placebo conditions and the inability of blinding therapists. We tested the open/hidden administration as an alternative approach to differentiate between specific and nonspecific treatment effects.
METHOD: 68 healthy subjects were randomized to receive one session of person-centered therapy to implement therapeutic alliance either with their knowledge (open; n = 23), without their knowledge (hidden; n = 22), or no treatment (control; n = 23) following experimenta

Here, we introduce the ID-GBA (Information Distance Guilt By Association) method to expand highly connected sets of nodes by deploying a novel algorithm for subgraph extension based on the guilt-by-association principle and information distance. In this study, ID-GBA was utilized to expand disease clusters, and identify novel disease genes. We first validate its ability to expand related disease sets from disease/disease graphs built using Open Targets' gene association scores. We then analyze disease/control gene expression networks and show that ID-GBA recaptures known disease genes in nine

BACKGROUND: There are nearly 500,000 childhood cancer survivors in the United States, and emerging evidence suggests at least 25% of these survivors have lost a peer to cancer. The current study investigated the nature of peer loss in a sample of young adult survivors of childhood cancer.
METHODS: Survivors (n = 63) completed an online survey including measures of peer loss, survivor guilt (Interpersonal Guilt Questionnaire) and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS; Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5). Relations between peer loss, survivor guilt, and PTSS were assessed.

Lacking the capacity for guilt is a defining characteristic of callous-unemotional (CU) traits. Although guilt is a multifaceted construct, past CU research has rarely considered the reasons underlying children's negative emotional responses to wrongdoing. The present study investigated how different forms of guilt were associated with CU traits during early and middle childhood in a Canadian community sample. We interviewed 4- and 8-year-olds (N = 300; 50% female) to assess their emotion attributions and reasoning in response to hypothetical acts of aggression. Interview responses were used t
