Derangement of the articular surfaces of the elbow in young gymnasts.

We report the long-term follow-up of lesions of the articular surface of the elbow joint in a group of 12 young gymnasts. There was a high incidence of osteochondritic lesions, intraarticular loose bodies, and precocious signs of joint aging. The prognosis of elbow joint articular surface lesions in these athletes is not good, with only one athlete being able to continue high-level activity at maturity.

[High performance gymnasts during the period of growth].

Twenty-two high-performance gymnasts between 12 and 22 years of age were examined for possible vertebral column damage following three years of training in a federal sports center. Half of the gymnasts complained of generalized back pain. Three gymnasts presented with kyphosis, five with a flat back, three with hyperlordosis, and six with an abnormal position of the lumbar spine. Normal X-rays were obtained from four athletes, although seven presented with marked Scheuermann's disease. In three cases, differential diagnosis was necessary between spondylitic deformation with vertebral rim disar

Specific injuries induced by the practice of trampoline, tumbling and acrobatic gymnastics.

PURPOSE: The recreational and competitive practice of acrobatic sports, that is, trampoline, tumbling and acrobatic gymnastics (ACRO), is growing rapidly around the world. Many studies described the injuries affecting young artistic gymnasts, but only few concerned acrobatic sports. METHODS: During a 5-year period, 357 traumatic events were collected in young acrobats practicing trampoline, tumbling or ACRO. Accident characteristics, level of expertise and training, injury location (upper limb, spine and lower limb), type of tissue injured (bone, cartilage, muscle, ligament and tendon) and pr

[Several endocrine aspects of duodenal stasis in the process of therapeutic gymnastics].

The levels of TTH, T3, T4 and testosterone were studied in 65 female patients suffering from chronic duodenitis with concomitant hypertensive duodenal stasis, stages I and II. A significant increase in the content of the hormones under study was revealed. Subclinical hyperthyroidism was determined by the formation of the irritative autonomic (sympathicotonic) syndrome as a result of irritation of the sympathetic nerve fibers of the celiac plexus due to the presence of inflammation at the duodenojejunal junction. This condition was attended by the predominance of catabolic processes (thyroid ho

Anatomy and biomechanics of the shoulder in throwing, swimming, gymnastics, and tennis.

As the most mobile joint in the body, the shoulder is structurally insecure. The ball-shaped humeral head rotates and glides on a shallow scapular cup. A limited amount of passive stability is provided by the glenoid labrum, which slightly deepens the scapular cup, and by ligaments reinforcing the capsule on its superior and anterior surfaces. At peak maturity ligamentous restraint equals 50 to 80 kg. These structural limitations indicate that the primary source of joint stability must be balanced muscle control. Joint compression is the major factor. This is supplemented by active tangential

Isthmic Spondylolisthesis in Young Gymnasts: A Report of Two Cases.

Isthmic spondylolisthesis is a condition characterized by the subluxation of one vertebral body over the adjacent inferior vertebral body, secondary to a defect in the pars interarticularis. This paper reports two cases of young acrobatic gymnasts who presented with long-term, progressive lumbosciatic pain and lower limb dysesthesia. One gymnast presented with additional neurogenic bladder dysfunction. Diagnostic testing revealed L5-S1 spondylolisthesis due to bilateral isthmic lysis in both gymnasts. Both underwent L4-S2 fixation followed by L5-S1 transdiscal arthrodesis with Rialto sacroilia

Vestibular Function Correlates with Radiologic Findings in a Gymnast with 22q11.2DS.

BACKGROUND The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is the most common identified microdeletion in humans. Anomalies of the vestibular system can occur with great frequency and are reported in the radiology literature. Fewer reports exist regarding vestibular function or its clinical features. CASE REPORT We present a case report of a competitive gymnast with 22q11.2DS who was noted to be having specific issues related to balance under conditions of competition, specifically on the balance beam. Comprehensive balance assessment provided evidence of the absence of lateral semicircular canal fu

STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional evaluation of sacro-pelvic morphology and orientation as well as spondylolisthesis prevalence in a cohort of young gymnasts. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of spondylolisthesis in a cohort of gymnasts, as well as the associated demographic characteristics and sacro-pelvic morphology and orientation. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Numerous studies have shown that sagittal sacro-pelvic morphology and orientation is abnormal in spondylolisthesis. Sacro-pelvic morphology and orientation in gymnasts and their relationship with spondylolisthesis have never been an

Neglected lesser tuberosity avulsion in an adolescent elite gymnast.

We report the case of a 16-year-old elite gymnast who presented with recurring pain in the left shoulder after training. The athlete recalled an injury to the shoulder 2 years ago. Clinically a localized tenderness to the anterior shoulder and loss of strength and range of motion was noted. Imaging investigation suggested a neglected lesser tuberosity avulsion. The athlete was treated with open excision of the deformed tuberosity and direct repair of the subscapularis to the humeral head. Following a careful postoperative rehabilitation protocol the athlete was able to return to unrestricted g

Role of intensive training in the growth and maturation of artistic gymnasts.

Short stature and later maturation of youth artistic gymnasts are often attributed to the effects of intensive training from a young age. Given limitations of available data, inadequate specification of training, failure to consider other factors affecting growth and maturation, and failure to address epidemiological criteria for causality, it has not been possible thus far to establish cause-effect relationships between training and the growth and maturation of young artistic gymnasts. In response to this ongoing debate, the Scientific Commission of the International Gymnastics Federation (FI

[The treatment of Dupuytren's contracture from the medical gymnastic standpoint].

A special treatment program has been developed for each individual patient. Each day the patient receives three different treatment modalities--active exercises, passive exercises and electrical stimulation. On days when X-ray therapy is administered, the patient performs only active exercises and receives no electrical stimulation. The patient is also directed to perform certain exercises at home. Patients are advised strongly against the use of hot baths. Dynamic splints are adjusted regularly. In winter and during cold weather, patients are instructed to wear gloves. This therapy, combined

Criteria for returning to gymnastics following an upper extremity injury: A scoping review.

Gymnastics is a unique athletic activity requiring different loading and weight bearing patterns through the entire body, especially the upper extremity (UE). Available literature on return to sport following a UE injury is predominately focused on return to throwing. Criteria regarding athlete appropriateness to return to UE weight bearing is limited. The purpose of this scoping review is to explore return to gymnastics and weight bearing following a UE injury. Computerized searches were performed using online databases. Grey literature, non-medical database sources and relevant study referen

Asymptomatic L5 Spondylolysis Does Not Necessarily Preclude Elite Gymnastics Participation: A Case Report.

CASE: An 8-year-old girl world-level rhythmic gymnast was diagnosed with bilateral L5 pars interarticularis defects and was asymptomatic. Imaging showed bilateral spondylolysis without spondylolisthesis or degeneration. Despite recommendations for sport restriction and external scrutiny, she continued elite training under specialist surveillance. Serial imaging over 18 years demonstrated persistent defects without progression. She competed internationally for >10 years without pain or limitation. CONCLUSION: Bilateral pediatric spondylolysis may remain clinically and radiographically stable d
