Thirty-one epileptic patients, selected from among 900 children with previous febrile convulsions and subsequent epilepsy, were typed for HLA antigens. In 16 of the 31 patients CMV was isolated from the urine shortly after the appearance of spontaneous fits; in the remaining 15 patients the virus was never detected. One hundred and ten patients with fibrocystic disease of the breast and 200 controls were HLA typed with a panel of 100 antisera for A and B locus. The main finding was the decreased frequency of BW35 antigen among patients compared to the controls. The difference remained significant in patients with the fibrous type of the disease and in patients of the nulliparous group. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of HLA antigens with chronic duodenal and gastric ulcer. 104 patients with chronic peptic ulcer, 52 with duodenal ulcer, and 52 with gastric ulcer were studied, and HLA antigens of the A, B and DR series were sought using the microlymphocytotoxicity test. In duodenal-ulcer patients, no significant differences were observed. In the gastric-ulcer group, Bw49 was increased in both sexes, with an adjusted odds ratio of 10.2. However, when corrected for the number of comparisons made, this difference failed to reach statistical significance.

The frequencies of blood groups, Rh and HLA antigens were studied in a series of patients with paracoccidioidomycosis as well as in control subjects. Statistical analysis of the results showed that only 2 antigens (HLA-A9 and HLA-B13) had a significantly increased frequency among patients with paracoccidioidomycosis compared with healthy controls. The prevalence and possible prognostic significance of HLA-DR antigens have been studied in 129 patients with seropositive (RF-positive) classical rheumatoid arthritis (RA). HLA-A, B, C and Bf typing was performed in 55 cases of Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE). When both the sex and age of the patient at the onset of the disease were taken into consideration (group I under 40 years, group II over 40), the following increases in antigen frequency were observed: group I: A2 in women, B5, A10 in men; group II: Aw19.2 in women, B8 in both sexes. Nevertheless, if the probability is multiplied by the number of antigens tested, these results are no longer significant.

The incidence of histocompatibility antigens HLA-A, B, C, DR was studied in 32 Italian children with dermatitis herpetiformis. The association of HLA antigens with pemphigus in Jewish patients of various ethnic origins was investigated. Of 45 Ashkenazi patients, 31 (68.6%) had A26 (p less than 10(-5) and 32 (7175) had BW38 ( less than 10(-5)0. Among the 11 non-Ashkenazi patients, 7 (63.6%) had A26 and only 1 had BW38. We have searched for possible associations between HLA antigens and meningococcal disease. Forty-three unrelated patients who recovered from meningococcal disease were typed for 37 HLA-A, -B and -C antigens, and 20 of them were also typed for eight HLA-DR antigens. As compared to healthy controls, a higher frequency of the HLA-A3 antigen was found among patients recovered from meningococcal septicaemia, but the difference was not statistically significant. HLA antigen frequencies were studied in 45 patients with ocular cicatricial pemphigoid. HLA-B12 was found to have an increased frequency of 44.4% in patients with ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, which was statistically significant when compared with a frequency of 19.6% in the control population (P less than .001 or P less than .031 when corrected for the number of antigens tested). HLA typing was performed on 75 caucasian and 58 black patients with paralytic dementia hospitalized at 2 state mental institutions in New York. Serological testing was performed to confirm previous infection with T. pallidum. The caucasian patients showed an increase in B18(18.7% vs. 9.6% in controls).
