The diagnostic and prognostic value of HLA B 35 antigen in viral subacute thyroiditis.

HLA B 35 antigen was assessed in 19 patients with viral subacute thyroiditis. The antigen was present in 68.43% of patients (no = 13). The relative risk (vs 500 health blood donors) is very high (12.27), with X2 = 33.4 and p less than 0.001. Despite the high relative risk, the presence/absence of HLA B 35 antigen showed no correlations with the main clinical features in our patients; no correlations can be made for: erythrocyte sedimentation rate, radioiodine uptake, thyromegaly, hyperthyroidism and evolution.

Case of Chlamydia-associated arthritis.

We report a case of Chlamydia-associated arthritis in a 40-year-old man. The patient experienced four episodes of Chlamydia trachomatis urtethritis within a few years. During the present episode, polyarthritis developed a few days after Chlamydia trachomatis urethritis was noted. The patient was diagnosed as having Chlamydia-associated arthritis. Loxoprofen sodium and azithromycin were started. Antibiotics induced clinical improvement of urethritis, although arthritis persisted for 3 months. HLA-B27 was negative, but both HLA-B35 and B40 were positive. Thus, we speculate that positivity for bo

Anticipating the side effects of benznidazole: HLA-B*35 and patch test.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of Chagas disease frequently causes distress to patients due to a high incidence of adverse effects. Different preemptive tests have been researched to prevent these effects and to allow focus to be given to certain predisposed patients. Benznidazole is the most prescribed Chagas disease treatment in Spain. In this work, we analyzed the genetic markers HLA-B*35 allele group and HLA-B*35:05 allele specifically, as well as an allergy patch test, as benznidazole's most frequent adverse effects are cutaneous. METHODS: HLA-B intermediate-resolution genotyping was performed

Association of HLA-DR4 with ocular cicatricial pemphigoid.

HLA typing for A, B, and C locus antigens was performed on 70 patients with ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (OCP) and on 1849 controls. Additionally, typing for DR and DQ antigens and for the complement proteins (C2, factor B, C4A, and C4B) was performed on 63 patients and on the same control population. A significantly higher incidence of the following antigens was found in the OCP patients when compared to the control population: DR4 (43% in patients compared to 18% in controls, p = 0.0001); DR5 (41% compared to 16%, p = 0.0001); DQw3 (57% compared to 31%, p = 0.0010); A2 (60% compared to 28%,

Investigating HLA haplotypes as a potential risk factor for nodding syndrome: A case-control study in the Mahenge area, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Nodding syndrome (NS) is a disabling childhood-onset epilepsy occurring in onchocerciasis-endemic regions. High Onchocerca volvulus microfilarial loads in childhood are a key risk factor, but not all heavily infected individuals develop NS, suggesting a possible role for host genetic susceptibility. Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) haplotypes have been implicated in susceptibility to various infectious and autoimmune diseases, including onchocerciasis. We investigated potential associations between HLA haplotypes and onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy (OAE), including NS, in Tanzania.

KIR3DL2 binds to HLA-B27 dimers and free H chains more strongly than other HLA class I and promotes the expansion of T cells in ankylosing spondylitis.

The human leukocyte Ag HLA-B27 (B27) is strongly associated with the spondyloarthritides. B27 can be expressed at the cell surface of APC as both classical β2-microglobulin-associated B27 and B27 free H chain forms (FHC), including disulfide-bonded H chain homodimers (termed B27(2)). B27 FHC forms, but not classical B27, bind to KIR3DL2. HLA-A3, which is not associated with spondyloarthritis (SpA), is also a ligand for KIR3DL2. In this study, we show that B27(2) and B27 FHC bind more strongly to KIR3DL2 than other HLA-class I, including HLA-A3. B27(2) tetramers bound KIR3DL2-transfected cells

Long-range PCR amplification as an alternative strategy for characterizing novel HLA-B alleles.

We have developed a simple, rapid and reliable method for specifically amplifying and cloning full-length HLA-B genes from genomic DNA. Using this methodology we characterized three alleles of interest at the molecular level. Two of the alleles appeared in our routine class I PCR-SSOP typing system, a variant of B*5801 found in the Daudi cell line and RCE 56 and a variant of B*4101 found in a number of volunteer donors on our Bone Marrow Donor Registry. The third, a variant B35 allele found in RCE 80, was first identified as unusual by serology. Our sequencing analysis of exon 2 and exon 3 ide

[Palindromic rheumatism. Immunologic survey and study of development in 43 cases].

43 patients (18 females, 25 males) presenting palindromic rheumatism were given follow-up examinations after a mean lapse of 14.75 years. 16 subjects still presented palindromic rheumatism and of these six showed complete remission. 27 patients had developed chronic inflammatory rheumatism after seven years (mean value) of palindromic rheumatism, but resolution of PR was seen in four cases. Male predominance was more marked in the palindromic subgroup (PAL) but was also seen in the subgroup of subjects who had developed PR (PAL-PR). Laboratory tests demonstrated a constant homogeneous increase

Genetics in Behcet's Disease: An Update Review.

Behcet's disease (BD) is one of the most vision-threatening clinical entities of uveitis. Although the etiopathogenesis of BD remains obscure, accumulating evidence has demonstrated that both genetic and environmental factors may contribute to the development of BD. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and candidate association studies have identified several genetic variants strongly associated with BD, including variants in human leukocyte antigen (HLA) -A02, -A03, -A24, -A26, -A31, -B15, -B27, -B35, -B49, -B51, -B57, -B58, -C0704, CIITA, ERAP1, MICA, IL1A-IL1B, IL10, IL12, IL23R, IL-23R/I

HLA and non-HLA genes in Behçet's disease: a multicentric study in the Spanish population.

INTRODUCTION: According to genome wide association (GWA) studies as well as candidate gene approaches, Behçet's disease (BD) is associated with human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-A and HLA-B gene regions. The HLA-B51 has been consistently associated with the disease, but the role of other HLA class I molecules remains controversial. Recently, variants in non-HLA genes have also been associated with BD. The aims of this study were to further investigate the influence of the HLA region in BD and to explore the relationship with non-HLA genes recently described to be associated in other populations.

The sonographical and functional sequelae of de Quervain's subacute thyroiditis: long-term follow-up.

Fifty-three patients with subacute thyroiditis (SAT) were seen during the acute stage of the disease. HLA-Bw 35 was positive in 33 out of 39 tested patients. At first presentation, all examined patients (N = 23) had ultrasound abnormalities (generalized hypodensity, single or multiple hypodense areas). Serum T4 and/or T3 were increased in 24/52, free T4 in 11/23, and the TSH response to TRH was flat in 8/11 patients. Six of 12 in whom volumetry was performed had goitres. Thirty-seven patients were re-examined after a mean follow-up interval of 46.5 months. At this follow-up, serum T4, free T4

Identification of vaccinia CD8+ T-cell epitopes conserved among vaccinia and variola viruses restricted by common MHC class I molecules, HLA-A2 or HLA-B7.

Immunization with vaccinia virus results in long-lasting protection against smallpox and is an approach that has been successfully used to eliminate natural smallpox infections worldwide. Today, vaccinia virus is very important not only as a vaccine virus to protect human against smallpox, but also as an expression vector for immunization against other infectious diseases, such as HIV and cancer. In this article, we identify three new vaccinia human CD8+ T-cell epitopes conserved among vaccinia and variola viruses restricted by HLA-A2, HLA-B7, or HLA-B*3502, which belongs to the HLA-B7 superty

Association of HLA class I allele and tuberculosis susceptibility: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tuberculosis) continues to cause one of the most pressing health burdens in the world, especially in developing nations, in the form of tuberculosis (TB). In addition to socio-environmental factors, it is widely believed that host genetic factors, particularly polymorphisms within the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system, may play an extensive role in the likelihood of a host's TB infection. Studies on the influence of HLA class I alleles (HLA-A, -B, -C) in human susceptibility to TB reported contradictory results. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analys
