One hundred fifty patients with toxic and scintigraphically diffuse goiter were HLA typed (A, B, C, DR). One group consisted of 101 patients with concomitant Graves' ophthalmopathy and/or TSH-binding inhibiting antibodies (TBIAb). Forty nine patients had neither ophthalmopathy nor TBIAb. The former group showed a higher prevalence of HLA-B8 and DR3 compared to a normal control group. The latter group showed a higher frequency of HLA-DR5, whereas the HLA-B8 and DR3 antigens were slightly below normal prevalence. These data indicate an immunogenetic heterogeneity in patients with toxic diffuse g

Monoclonal antibodies specifically binding common determinants on all HLA-A, B anc C antigen molecules blocked the lysis of EB virus-transformed target cells by EB virus-specific cytotoxic T cells reactivated in vitro. Blocking was mediated through binding of the antibodies to the target rather than to the effector cells and was maximal (75 to 85% inhibition of lysis) at saturating antibody concentrations. A similar blocking effect was also shown by a monoclonal antibody binding to beta 2-microglobulin, a molecule physically associated with HLA-A, B and C antigens on the target cell surface, b

HLA-ABC antigens in 51 patients suffering from alopecia areata have been analyzed by means of 47 different antigens using the microlymphocytotoxicity test. In comparison with various control populations, there could not be proved any significant association in the tested antigens. Thus we suggest that the reported associations may have been caused by geographical or racial variations.

BACKGROUND: An association between HLA antigens and susceptibility to multiple sclerosis (MS) has been established, especially in Caucasian populations. Such associations have not been as clearly defined in many Arab populations, where even the frequencies of specific HLA antigens remain unclear
OBJECTIVE: The study was designed to (i) investigate the frequencies of HLA Class I and II antigens in Kuwaiti Arabs with MS, and; (ii) assess possible inter-relationships between HLA Class II antigens and such clinical phenotypic variables in MS as age at onset, gender, disease subtype and scale of d

The purpose of our study was to evaluate the relationship between the histocompatibility antigens and type I diabetes mellitus in families living in the north-eastern part of Italy. In each family two siblings were affected by diabetes. HLA-antigens were determined with the lymphocytotoxicity test, utilizing antisera of the series A-B-C-DR. The phenotypic frequencies were compared with those observed in controls. We showed that diabetes has a strong association with HLA DR 3 and/or DR 4 antigens. In particular we registered high frequency of compound heterozygous DR 3 - DR 4 subjects, and this

Reversal reactions (RR) or acute neuritis episodes are frequently observed in borderline tuberculoid (BT) leprosy patients during the first year of treatment, and are associated with a rapid increase in cell-mediated immunity. Because HLA-linked genes have been shown to be an important factor in determining the type of leprosy that develops in susceptible individuals and because HLA molecules regulate cellular interactions in the immune system, we have investigated whether RR are associated with HLA antigens in Ethiopian patients. The data reported here indicate that this is not the case: no s

Two groups totaling 67 patients with idiopathic focal, segmental, and generalized dystonia, including torticollis, were compared with normal controls to determine whether there was a difference in the frequency of A, B, and C locus human leukocyte (HLA) antigens. The results indicated no statistically significant deviations in HLA antigen frequencies between the patients and the normal controls. Thirteen of the patients with idiopathic torsion dystonia were compared with normal controls for DR locus antigens. A trend of increased DR3 antigens observed in the patients may be significant. This paper typed HLA-A, B, C and DR antigens in patients with psoriasis vulgaris and healthy persons in 12 families. The phenotype frequencies of HLA-A1, B13, B17, Cw4 and Cw6 in the patients were higher than those in the controls. The analysis of haplotype segregation showed that HLA haplotypes in families with more psoriatic cases were marked deviation from random distribution. One or two HLA haplotypes sharing among affected siblings occurred more frequently than expected. The result of Lods score for six families showed that there was a close linkage between the gene of psoriasis vulgaris

Malignant human urothelial cell lines propagated in vitro have previously been demonstrated to express low amounts of monomorphic HLA-A,B,C as compared to premalignant urothelial cells. In this study the expression of polymorphic HLA-A,B epitopes in human urothelial cell lines have been investigated in greater detail. The expression of HLA-B locus coded epitopes in malignant TGrIII cells was demonstrated to be low or absent as compared to pre-malignant TGrII or slightly transformed TGrI cells, suggesting a mechanism by which malignant cells could escape from the host immune response. The extre

Background: Since 1977 the susceptibility to SAT has been known to be HLA-B*35-related in ~70% of patients. Recently it has been demonstrated that SAT is associated with the presence of HLA-B*18:01 and DRB1*01, as well as with HLA-C*04:01. The association between the type of genetic SAT background and sonographic pattern of the disease has never been analyzed. The aim of the study was to evaluate the potential correlation between the presence of individual HLA haplotypes and the sonographic SAT pattern, and to provide the US characteristics of the analyzed SAT cases. Methods: HLA-A, -B, -C, -D

HLA complex is composed of several closely linked loci, each containing several alleles, yielding a high expression of polymorphism. Vitiligo, a commonly acquired dermatological disorder, has been associated with different HLA antigens in different ethnic groups. In this study, HLA classes I (HLA-A, B, and C) and II (HLA-DR, DQ) antigens/alleles were analyzed in a group of 80 Saudi subjects consisting of vitiligo patients (40) and matched controls (40). The frequency of antigens of various HLA loci was tested using two-stage microcytotoxicity assays, while the frequency of alleles of HLA-DR wa

We report an interesting case concerning an irreversible antibody-mediated rejection (AMR), associated with anti-HLA-C DSA, which occurred after a second kidney transplantation despite having determined a low number of antibodies directed against HLA-C antigens (MFI<1000) in the previous transplantation (which was then considered to be an indicator of low risk of AMR). A 63-year-old woman was re-transplanted with pre-transplant (PrT) sensitization. On day 7 post-transplantation, oligoanuria occurred and increased MFIs for the detected PrT antibodies and other antibodies (non-detected or detect

Genetic typing of class I major histocompatibility complex (MHC) antigens (HLA-A, -B and -C) was performed in 22 patients with Fuch's heterochromic cyclitis (FHC) and in a control group of 339 healthy subjects in order to ascertain whether there are any genetic factors that protect against or increase the risk of developing this disease. The frequency of only one HLA-antigen was found to differ significantly in the patients with FHC as compared with the normal subjects: HLA-A2 had a negative association with FHC (9.09% in FHC verus 47.47% in the control group; p < 0.01, Fisher's exact test wit

Changes were examined in the expression of Class I and II major histocompatibility complex (MHC) antigens by autochthonous cells of the terminal ileum affected by Crohn's disease. The study was based on the analysis of transmural specimens from terminal ileum segments obtained in the course of ileocolectomy for colon cancer and Crohn's disease. Serial sections were immunostained using monoclonal antibodies directed against monomorphic determinants of HLA-A,B,C, DR, DP, DQ, and the invariant chain (Ii) associated with Class II molecules. Compared with the normal state, the only change in Class

AIM: To investigate the association of the HLA-C allele with psoriasis. Methods Twenty five type I psoriasis patients with 25 healthy controls participated in this study. PCR-SSP was preferred for HLA-C typing. The patients were questioned for age at onset and family history and examined for severity and area of involvement of the disease and presence of articular, nail and scalp involvement. PCRSSP method was preferred for HLA-C typing. Statistical analyses were made using the Chi-square test. Relative risk was assessed to determine the association between disease and HLA antigen.
RESULTS: T

Background: There are several studies investigating the role of human leukocyte antigens (HLA) in the development and recurrence of subacute thyroiditis (SAT). The HLA subtypes associated with SAT were usually determined in a population-based manner and HLA-B*35, HLA-B*18:01, HLA-C*04:01, and HLA-DRB1*01 were detected to play a role in the disease susceptibility and prognosis. The aim of this study was to determine HLA alleles associated with the tendency of recurrence and prevention of SAT within the Turkish population. Methods: This prospective study was conducted with 51 SAT patients and 72

BACKGROUND: The human leukocyte antigen system (HLA) is divided into two classes involved in antigen presentation: class I presenting intracellular antigens and class II presenting extracellular antigens. While susceptibility to infections is correlated with the HLA system, data on associations between HLA genotypes and Malassezia-related skin diseases (MRSD) are lacking. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate associations between HLA alleles and MRSD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants in The Danish Blood Donor Study (2010-2018) provided questionnaire data on life style, anthr

Dermatitis herpetiformis is a rare blistering skin disease characterized in part by granular IgA deposits at the dermoepidermal junction, an associated gluten-sensitive enteropathy, and a strong association with the human histocompatibility leukocyte antigen (HLA)-A1 (74% of patients with dermatitis herpetiformis), -B8 (88%), -DR3 (95%), and -DQw2 (100%). Dermatitis herpetiformis is rarely seen in American blacks and some investigators have postulated that this finding may be due to the decreased frequency of HLA-A1 and -B8 in American blacks compared with Caucasians (American blacks: HLA-A1 =
