The Effect of Urbanization and Sampling Date on Blood Immunophysiology and Haemosporidian Parasitemia in Cardueline Finches.

Urbanization alters habitat structure, resource availability, and influences pathogen transmission, leading to widespread ecological disruptions as it continues to expand. We investigated the impact of urbanization on physiological stress and vector-borne parasite prevalence in 3 Cardueline finch species: house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus), lesser goldfinches (Spinus psaltria), and pine siskins (S. pinus). We hypothesized that urbanization level (urban, suburban, and rural) would be associated with higher heterophil to lymphocyte (H/L) ratios, a proxy of stress, and increased parasite preval

Review of Genetic Information of Morphologically Described Haemoproteus Parasites Recorded in GenBank and MalAvi Databases.

Haemoproteus Kruse, 1890 (Haemosporida: Haemoproteiidae) parasites are known for their high genetic diversity, avian host-specificity, and wide geographical distribution. Currently, 2019 lineages are registered as Haemoproteus species, but only 160 of them have been linked to morphospecies. Two main open access and independent databases are used to compile genetic, geographical, and host information on Haemoproteus parasites: GenBank and MalAvi. However, the data registered are not integrated, representing an obstacle in investigating Haemoproteus parasites. Here, we review all reported avian

EFFECTS OF AVIAN MALARIA IN A POPULATION OF CERULEAN WARBLER (SETOPHAGA CERULEA) WITH FIRST DOCUMENTATION OF HAEMOSPORIDIAN LINEAGES INFECTING THE SPECIES.

Avian haemosporidians (Haemosporida) commonly infect terrestrial birds worldwide and can have negative consequences for individuals. We studied avian haemosporidian infections and mitochondrial cytochrome-b lineages in a southern Indiana breeding population of cerulean warbler (Setophaga cerulea; n = 51) over 2 yr with traditional microscopy and standard molecular methods. We investigated potential effects of infection on individual body condition, associations of host specificity and levels of infection (parasitemia) according to haemosporidian lineage genus, and geographic distributions of l

Cophylogeny, narrow host breadth and local conditions drive highly specialized bird-haemosporidian associations in West-Central African sky islands.

The parasite island syndrome denotes shifts in parasite life histories on islands, which affect parasite diversity, prevalence and specificity. However, current evidence of parasite island syndromes mainly stems from oceanic islands, while sky islands (i.e. mountains isolated by surrounding low-elevation habitats) have received limited attention. To explore the parasite syndrome in Afrotropical sky islands, we examined haemosporidian blood parasites and their bird hosts in two Afromontane regions in Cameroon. Analysing more than 1300 bird blood samples from the Bamenda Highlands and Mount Came

Avian haemosporidian parasite prevalence and diversity in two populations of the American kestrel (Falco sparverius).

Parasite communities vary among host species and across space. However, little is known about differences in parasite communities between geographically and genetically distinct populations of the same host species. American kestrels (Falco sparverius) are small falcons with regionally distinct genetic populations across North America. We sampled kestrels from Delaware and Utah for avian haemosporidian parasites (genera: Haemoproteus, Plasmodium, and Leucocytozoon) and used molecular barcoding of the parasite cytochrome b gene (cyt b) to quantify parasite genetic lineage diversity. We identifi

Leucocytozoon Prevalence Differs by Sex in Louisiana Wild Turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo).

Eastern wild turkeys (Meleagris gallapovo silvestris) in Louisiana have not fully recovered since their decline in the mid-20th century, despite multiple conservation management efforts. Wild turkeys are susceptible to Leucocytozoon infection and also serve as reservoirs of Leucocytozoon parasites. In this study, we tested for Haemosporidian infections (Haemoproteus, Plasmodium, and Leucocytozoon) in 106 different blood samples collected from hunted and live-trapped turkeys in Louisiana using PCR and sequencing of amplicons. Haemoproteus was the most prevalent genus (92%) and had the highest s

Determinants of vector-borne avian pathogen occurrence in a mosaic of habitat fragmentation in California.

BACKGROUND: As habitat fragmentation increases, ecological processes, including patterns of vector-borne pathogen prevalence, will likely be disrupted, but ongoing investigations are necessary to examine this relationship. Here, we report the differences in the prevalence of Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, s.l.) and haemoproteosis (Haemoproteus spp.) pathogens in avian populations of a fragmented habitat. B. burgdorferi s.l. is a generalist pathogen that is transmitted by Ixodes pacificus vectors in California, and Haemoproteus is an avian parasite transmitted by Culicoides vect

Haemoparasite infection risk in multi-host avian system: an integrated analysis.

Avian blood parasites play a crucial role in wildlife health and ecosystem dynamics, exhibiting heterogeneous spatial distribution influenced by various factors. Although factors underlying heterogeneity in infection with blood parasites have been explored in many avian hosts, their importance in the context of host species and the parasite taxon remains poorly understood, particularly in cohabiting host species. Using next-generation sequencing for parasite screening, we investigate the association between Haemoproteus, Plasmodium and Trypanosoma infections in relation to individual parameter

Do specialist and generalist parasites differ in their prevalence and intensity of infection? A test of the niche breadth and trade-off hypotheses.

Studying host specificity is crucial to understanding the ability of parasites to spread to new hosts and trigger disease emergence events. The relationship between host specificity and parasite prevalence and infection intensity, has typically been studied in the context of two opposing hypotheses. According to the trade-off hypothesis generalist parasites, which can infect a broad range of hosts, will reach a lower prevalence and infection intensity than more specialist parasites due to the higher costs to adapt to multiple host immune systems. In contrast, the niche breadth hypothesis propo

Haemoproteus tartakovskyi (Haemoproteidae): Complete sporogony in Culicoides nubeculosus (Ceratopogonidae), with implications for avian haemoproteid experimental research.

Numerous recent studies have addressed the molecular characterization, distribution and genetic diversity of Haemoproteus spp. (Haemoproteidae). Some species of these blood parasites cause severe disease in birds, and heavy infections are often lethal in biting midges (Ceratopogonidae) and other blood-sucking insects. However, information about the vectors of haemoproteids is scarce. This presents an obstacle for better understanding the mechanisms of host-parasite interactions and the epidemiology of haemoproteosis. Here we investigated the sporogonic development of Haemoproteus tartakovskyi,

Factors influencing a common but neglected blood parasite prevalence in breeding populations of passerines.

The occurrence of avian blood protists is affected by multiple factors that include the characteristics of the hosts, the vectors, the parasites, as well as the environmental factors. This study provides an insight into some of the factors that influence the prevalence of avian Lankesterella, neglected but common blood parasites in breeding populations of common passerines. The highest prevalences of Lankesterella infection were observed in 1 great tit (Parus major) population at 63%, 1 blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) population at 49% and a sedge warbler (Acrocephalus schoenobaenus) population

NATURAL HISTORY COLLECTIONS ARE NEEDED TO RESOLVE HOST SAMPLING GAPS IN PARASITOLOGY: INSIGHTS FROM AVIAN HAEMOSPORIDIANS.

The field of parasitology, and thus biodiversity research more broadly, is faced with the unfortunate reality that our understanding of parasite biodiversity can be only as good as our ability to sample parasite host species. Although the sampling of many host species is trivial, there typically remains a subset of species across any host group of interest that is difficult to sample due to rarity, habitat, body size, or some other trait. The result is a blind spot in our understanding of parasite biodiversity that is centered around parasite species that infect hosts that are rarely sampled b

Nest secondary plants and their associations with haemosporidian blood parasites in blue tit females.

Avian nests often contain aromatic plant fragments, which has led to propose among others that they repel ectoparasites or vectors of blood parasites (‘nest protection hypothesis’). To date, the relationship between secondary plant provisioning and the parent's blood parasites remains unexplored. We investigated whether the presence of secondary plants in nests during different reproductive stages (before incubation, during incubation and nestling period) was associated with the presence of nest-dwelling ectoparasites and females’ blood-parasite infections in blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus) du

[Distribution of lethal haemosporidoses pathogens in poultry].

Peculiarities of geographical distribution and distribution among hosts of the haemosporidian parasites, which cause lethal diseases in poultry, are specified. So far, 11 species of such parasites have been described. This represents about 5% of bird haemosporidian parasites. The haemosporidians cause the lethal epizooties in turkeys, chickens, ducks, geese, pigeons and domesticated ostriches. One species of parasites belongs to the family Haemoproteidae, six--to Plasmodiidae, and four--to Leucocytozoidae. The agents of lethal haemosporidioses have been recorded in domestic birds of the orders

A generalist vector-transmitted parasite exhibits population genetic structure among host genera.

Generalist parasites experience selective pressures from the various host species they infect. However, it is unclear if parasite transmission among host species precludes the establishment of host-specific adaptations and population genetic structure. We assessed the population genetic structure of the vector-transmitted avian haemosporidian parasite Haemoproteus majoris (lineage WW2; n = 34 infections) in a single site in southern Sweden among 10 of its host species. The 2 best-sampled host genera were Phylloscopus (2 species, n = 15 infections) and Sylvia (4 species, n = 15). We designed a
