Mucosal Schwann cell hamartoma (MSCH) is a recently proposed disease condition. It is a benign neurofibroma that differs from neurofibromas present in type-1 neurofibromatosis. It is a form of polypoid lesion that develops in the mesenchyme, presenting with pure Schwann cell growth in the lamina propria and exhibiting diffuse S-100 protein staining. This study presents the case of a 51-year-old man, a patient who underwent routine endoscopy, which revealed a 0.5 cm polyp in the descending colon, followed by pathological and immunohistochemical examination, which verified the diagnosis of intes

Gyratory seizures (GS) are a rare seizure type characterized by body rotation of ≥180° around its vertical axis. While GS have been documented in various epileptic syndromes, their occurrence in association with hypothalamic hamartomas (HH) has not been reported previously. This case report introduces the first documented instance of GS in a patient with a HH, a non-neoplastic tumor originating from the tuber cinereum. The patient, a 25-year-old female, with a history of recurrent seizures since childhood, initially presented with gelastic seizures, marked by inappropriate laughter, and subseq

We present a rare case of a female non-smoker diagnosed with a large benign tracheal chondrohamartoma, masquerading as severe asthma. The patient was in her late 70s and had a history of asthma. She had presented to hospital with multiple episodes of intractable cough, shortness of breath and wheeze in the year prior to diagnosis. She had been managed for asthma for two decades by different physicians in primary care, based on documented airflow obstruction. Given her repeated admissions, the respiratory team was consulted. In view of the persistent cough despite maximal treatment, she was ref

A 67-year-old man presented with progressive diplopia. On evaluation, he was noted to have bilateral palsies of cranial nerves III, IV and VI as well as a unilateral right true vocal fold paralysis. CT and MRI studies demonstrated a T2-bright left ethmoid mass with no evidence of bony erosion. Direct visualisation demonstrated a polypoid appearing mass of the left sphenoethmoid recess. Operative biopsy was pursued with final pathology demonstrating benign seromucinous hamartoma. Subsequent blood work demonstrated high titres of anti-acetylcholine receptor antibodies consistent with myasthenia

Hypothalamic hamartomas are rare tumors that typically present in childhood, often with gelastic seizures, precocious puberty, or as a manifestation of Pallister-Hall syndrome. Neurofibrillary tangles are cytoplasmic aggregates of hyperphosphorylated tau that are best recognized in Alzheimer disease, other tau-associated neurodegenerative diseases, or as part of aging, but occasionally may be seen in low-grade neoplasms with a ganglion cell component as gangliocytoma or ganglioglioma. Herein, we report a case of hypothalamic hamartoma with neurofibrillary tangles.

The current case highlights an uncommon cause of recurrent pneumonia. A 76 year old female presented to her primary care physician multiple times with recurrent left lower lobe pneumonia. After multiple chest radiographs continued to show no improvement despite antibiotics, a CT of the chest was performed and showed an intraluminal lesion in the left lower lobe bronchus. An endoscopic biopsy was performed and showed the lesion to be a hamartoma. The patient subsequently underwent resection of the lesion and her symptoms resolved. This case illustrates the need for further diagnostic testing wh

Primary cardiac tumors are very rare, and tumors arising from cardiac valves are extremely rare. We present a case of lipomatous hamartoma of the mitral valve in a young female. This is the 6th case of lipomatous hamartoma of the mitral valve to be reported. We discuss the operative and histopathological findings.

Hypothalamic hamartoma (HH) is a relatively rare cause of epilepsy, mainly affecting children. Nearly all patients develop gelastic seizures, often followed by other focal seizure types. Our case illustrates the mechanisms of epileptogenesis in HH. The patient developed gelastic attacks as a baby, and secondarily generalized seizures and drop attacks at 9 years of age. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed the presence of a HH. Presurgical assessment with intracranial electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring recorded gelastic seizures with generalized epileptiform activity. Functional stim

INTRODUCTION: Hypothalamic hamartomas are congenital malformations. Clinically, they can be asymptomatic, but they cause seizures, mental retardation and precocious puberty in many cases.
CASE REPORT: A 20-day-old boy with hypothalamic hamartoma and bilateral anophthalmia was presented. Except those, no other congenital anomaly was detected.
CONCLUSION: This is a rare case of hypothalamic hamartoma with bilateral anophthalmia. The mutations at SOX2 has an important role in the developing brain and eyes.

We presented a case of splenic hamartoma. A 12-year-old girl has had an abdominal pain since 9 years of age. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan at a local hospital revealed heterogeneous enhancement of a mass which is 5 cm in diameter, located near the surface of the spleen, diagnosed as hemangioma. She had an investigation with Levovist-enhanced ultrasonography and superparamagnetic iron oxide-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging on T2-weighted gradient-echo imaging, which showed a hypervascular echoic mass and a decrease of signal intensity. The imaging diagnosis was splenic hamartoma

Hypothalamic hamartoma is a rare congenital nonneoplastic heterotopia consisting of neurons, glial cells and fiber bundles. Clinically, most patients with hypothalamic hamartomas present with precocious puberty and/or gelastic epilepsy. We report an interesting case of hypothalamic hamartoma causing precocious puberty in a young male. The lesion was excised totally through frontotemporal craniotomy and transSylvian approach without any added morbidity.

Hypothalamic hamartoma presents with precocious puberty, epilepsy or both. There are two epileptic syndromes, one presenting initially in infancy with gelastic seizures evolving rapidly into a syndrome with multiple seizures, developmental delay and a moderate to severe behaviour disorder. The other presents later with a milder epileptic syndrome, again usually including gelastic seizures, but with normal intellect and behaviour. Magnetic resonance imaging identifies and gives a detailed anatomical picture of these lesions. Direct surgery, using microsurgical techniques and neuronavigation gui

A case of splenic hamartoma is presented that was incidentally discovered in a 55-year-old male during a work-up to determine the aetiology of hypertension. Diagnostic imaging procedures were suggestive of a splenic hamartoma. Histologically, this was found to be of the pulposal type with haemosiderin and calcification foci and many eosinophil leukocytes. The patient had an uneventful recovery. A review of the pertinent references is included, together with a brief discussion about the occurrence of splenic hamartoma in the context of tuberous sclerosis.

Precocious puberty of cerebral origin is classified into pseudoprecocious puberty and true precocious puberty. Pseudoprecocious puberty is caused by HCG secreting tumours. True precocious puberty is caused by various hypothalamic diseases. Among them, hypothalamic hamartoma is the most common cause. Precocious puberty is caused by elevated blood pituitary gonadotropin concentration, secondary to the elevated hypothalamic LHRH secretion. The hypothalamic hamartoma is not infrequently associated with laughing (gelastic) seizures as well as convulsions. Diagnosis of a hypothalamic hamartoma is ea

A 3-year-old boy with true precocious puberty and hamartoma of the hypothalamus is described. Preliminary diagnosis was established by the presence of unusually advanced puberty and skeletal age without other evidence of central nervous system dysfunction, elevated blood gonadotropin and testosterone concentrations, and positive computed tomography scans. Pneumoencephalography further delineated the tumor. Hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal and adrenal functions were studied. Release of gonadotropins after the injection of synthetic luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone and the suppression of lute

Cutaneous and oral lesions appearing as verrucous papules are a regular and diagnostic finding in Cowden's disease. The lesion occur predominantly over the central portion of the face, concentrated around orifices, lips, gingiva, and tongue, and over the acral portions of the upper extremities. These skin lesions have been found to be associated with fibrocystic breast disease, carcinoma of the breast, thyroid tumors, ovarian cysts, gastrointestinal polyposis, fibromas, angiomas, and lipomas. It is important to be able to distinguish the skin lesions from simple verruca vulgaris because they s
