A Quasi-Experimental Pre-Post Assessment of Hand Hygiene Practices and Hand Dirtiness Following a School-Based Educational Campaign.

Hand hygiene (HH) is essential for preventing disease transmission, particularly in schools where children are in close contact with other children. This study evaluated a school-based intervention on observed HH practices and hand cleanliness in six primary schools in Guatemala. Hand cleanliness was measured using the Quantitative Personal Hygiene Assessment Tool. The intervention included (1) HH behavior change promotion through Handwashing Festivals, and (2) increased access to HH materials at HH stations. Handwashing Festivals were day-long events featuring creative student presentations o

Hand hygiene compliance in nursing home wards: The effects of feedback with lights on alcohol-based hand rub dispensers.

BACKGROUND: Hand hygiene (HH) among health care workers (HCWs) is crucial in preventing infections in nursing homes. However, HH compliance (HHC) among HCWs remains low. This study aimed to investigate the effect of feedback lights on HCWs' HHC. METHODS: A 5-month interventional study was conducted in 3 wards in a nursing home in Denmark. During the intervention period, a green light with a smiley appeared on the alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) dispensers when HCWs used the ABHR, acknowledging HCWs for using the ABHR. HHC was monitored using an automatic HH monitoring system (AHHMS). RESULTS:

Survey of attitudes and practices of Irish nursing students towards hand hygiene, including handrubbing with alcohol-based hand rub.

BACKGROUND: Hand hygiene is widely recognised as the most important measure a healthcare worker can take in preventing the spread of healthcare associated infections. As a member of the healthcare team, nursing students have direct patient contact during clinical practice; hence, good hand hygiene practice among nursing students is essential. Low to moderate levels of hand hygiene knowledge and poor attitudes and practices are reported among nursing students. However, less is known about their attitudes and practices of handrubbing with ABHR, even though handrubbing is the recommended optimum

Factors affecting hand hygiene adherence among critical care healthcare workers: A systematic review.

Hand hygiene (HH) is the most effective and cost-efficient strategy to prevent healthcare-associated infections, yet compliance remains suboptimal, particularly in intensive care units (ICUs) and emergency departments (EDs). This study aimed to analyse the main factors influencing HH compliance among healthcare workers in critical care settings. A systematic review of studies investigating barriers to HH adherence in ICUs and EDs was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. Thirty studies published between 1994 and 2024 were included, mostly quantitative, with sample sizes ranging from 25 to

Implementing an electronic hand hygiene system improved compliance in the intensive care unit.

BACKGROUND: Hand hygiene (HH) compliance is low and difficult to improve among health care workers. We aim to validate an electronic HH system and assess the impact of this system on HH compliance and quality changes over time at both group and individual levels. METHODS: An automated electronic HH system was installed in a 10-bed surgical intensive care unit. RESULTS: The full HH compliance rate increased significantly from 8.4% in week 1 to 20.5% in week 16 with week 10 being the highest (27.4%). The partial compliance rate maintained relative consistency between 13.2% and 20.0%. The combi

HAND HYGIENE PRACTICES POST EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE OUTBREAK IN A NIGERIAN TEACHING HOSPITAL.

INTRODUCTION: Ebola virus disease (EVD) is a highly contagious viral infection that requires a high risk perception and practice of good hand hygiene by regular hand washing or use of hand sanitizers for infection control at all time. The declaration of Nigeria as an Ebola-free country by the World Health Organization on the 20th of October, 2014 has prompted many Nigerians, including healthcare workers, to discontinue the regular practice of good hand hygiene which was commonplace during the EVD outbreak. OBJECTIVE: The study assessed hand hygiene practices for infection control after the We

Quantitative microbial risk assessment of antibacterial hand hygiene products on risk of shigellosis.

There are conflicting reports on whether antibacterial hand hygiene products are more effective than nonantibacterial products in reducing bacteria on hands and preventing disease. This research used new laboratory data, together with simulation techniques, to compare the ability of nonantibacterial and antibacterial products to reduce shigellosis risk. One hundred sixtythree subjects were used to compare five different hand treatments: two nonantibacterial products and three antibacterial products, i.e., 0.46% triclosan, 4% chlorhexidine gluconate, or 62% ethyl alcohol. Hands were inoculated

Stratum corneum cytokines, structural proteins, and transepidermal water loss: effect of hand hygiene.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: There are few reports on the cytokine response to high frequency hand hygiene among health care workers (HCWs) in an occupational setting. We have observed significant skin barrier compromise consistent with chronic irritant contact dermatitis in HCWs. We hypothesized that repetitive hand hygiene would activate the epidermal inflammatory cascade and lead to changes in structural proteins and cytokines. METHODS: Keratin 6, keratin 1, 10, 11, involucrin, IL1alpha, TNFalpha, IL8, IL1RA, and IL10 were analyzed from the SC using bead-based arrays. Knuckle and dorsum samples were e

Hand Hygiene Among Health Care Workers During COVID-19 Pandemic: Challenges and Recommendations.

In-hospital transmission is one of the main routes of the 2019 novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) spreading among health care workers (HCWs) who are the frontline fighters. However, coming into contact with COVID-19-positive patients is unavoidable. Therefore, hand hygiene is of utmost importance for the prevention of COVID-19 among HCWs. This purpose can be achieved by applying alcohol-based hand rubs, washing hands properly with soap and water, and applying other antiseptic agents. Nevertheless, regular hand hygiene could also be challenging, because water, detergents, and disinfectants may pred

The Impact of Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Improvements on Hand Hygiene at Two Liberian Hospitals during the Recovery Phase of an Ebola Epidemic.

Fourteen years of civil war left Liberia with crumbling infrastructure and one of the weakest health systems in the world. The 2014-2015 Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak exposed the vulnerabilities of the Liberian health system. Findings from the EVD outbreak highlighted the lack of infection prevention and control (IPC) practices, exacerbated by a lack of essential services such as water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in healthcare facilities. The objective of this intervention was to improve IPC practice through comprehensive WASH renovations conducted at two hospitals in Liberia, priorit

Epidemiologic background of hand hygiene and evaluation of the most important agents for scrubs and rubs.

The etiology of nosocomial infections, the frequency of contaminated hands with the different nosocomial pathogens, and the role of health care workers' hands during outbreaks suggest that a hand hygiene preparation should at least have activity against bacteria, yeasts, and coated viruses. The importance of efficacy in choosing the right hand hygiene product is reflected in the new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guideline on hand hygiene (J. M. Boyce and D. Pittet, Morb. Mortal. Wkly. Rep. 51:1-45, 2002). The best antimicrobial efficacy can be achieved with ethanol (60 to 85%), is

Real-Time Wristband Monitoring of Hand Hygiene Technique Using Motion Sensors and Machine Learning.

Healthcare personnel (HCP) frequently do not perform recommended hand hygiene (HH) techniques, undermining infection prevention. The proposed wristband device is intended to dispense antiseptics at the point of care while providing real-time feedback on HH technique performance. Real-time feedback will be generated by an algorithm that classifies step-level hand movements from wrist inertial sensors. This algorithm is currently undergoing validation through assessment of concurrent validity against a gold standard, a trained observer who assesses the HH technique. The present study focuses on
