Medical surveillance was used in the workplace to determine and monitor the level of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) present in workers exposed to upper extremity vibration. Ergonomic intervention in the form of new tools with lower vibration levels and the use of International Standards Organizaiton (ISO) 10819 antivibration gloves were associated with a decrease in the pathologic findings and symptoms in these workers. Workers without such intervention were more likely to show progression of symptoms and findings. These findings suggest that ergonomic inte

Exposure to vibrating hand-held tools can cause a variety of vascular and neuromuscular symptoms collectively named Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS). The clinical presentation of this syndrome includes paraesthesiae or tingling in digits, pain or tenderness in the wrist and hand, digital blanching, cold intolerance, weakness of the finger flexors or intrinsic muscles and discolouration and trophic skin lesions of the fingers. HAVS can be reversible, at least in the earlier stages, but resolution of symptoms is unusual in more severe cases, and continued use of vibrating tools in such cases i

BACKGROUND: Pain and its management are important aspects of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS).
AIMS: To determine the factors associated with finger and hand pain in workers with HAVS and, specifically, to assess the impact of several neurological variables as well as the vascular component of HAVS, grip strength and age.
METHODS: We assessed men with HAVS at a hospital occupational medicine clinic over 2 years. Subjects scored finger and hand pain separately using the Borg Scale (0-10). The possible predictors we evaluated included the Stockholm Neurological Scale (SNS) and Stockholm Vasc

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the effect of hand elevation on reductions in finger blood flow (FBF) induced by hand-transmitted vibration.
METHODS: Fourteen males attended six sessions on six separate days, with a control sessions and a vibration session (125-Hz vibration at 44 ms(-2) rms) with the right hand supported at each of three elevations: 20 cm below heart level (HL), at HL, and 20 cm above HL. Finger blood flow on the left and right hand was measured every 30 s during each 25-min session comprised of five periods: (1) no force and no vibration (5 min), (2) 2-N force and no vib

Long-term occupational exposure to hand-arm vibration can result in a permanent reduction in tactile sensitivity in exposed fingers and hands. Little is known about how vibration causes this reduction in sensitivity, and currently no testing procedures have been developed to monitor changes in sensory perception during ongoing exposures. We used a rat-tail model of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) to determine whether changes in sensory nerve function could be detected after acute exposure to vibration. Nerve function was assessed using the current perception threshold (CPT) method. We also

INTRODUCTION: Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) is a chronic disease to vessels and nerves caused by vibrations. In Sweden, the medical check-up for vibrations (MCV) implements the EU surveillance system to detect early cases. No earlier research has shown participation in MCVs, nor why MCVs is avoided. We aimed to improve the understanding on avoidance of MCVs among vibration-exposed workers.
METHODS: We used a mixed method. Participation was estimated from sales data registries from the three largest occupational health services (OHS) in Sweden, comprising 50% of the market share. Exposure

BACKGROUND: Manual dexterity can be assessed using the Purdue Pegboard test (PPT) and used for staging of hand-arm vibration (HAV) syndrome.
AIMS: To describe PPT results among HAV-exposed workers and investigate what factors influence the results.
METHODS: We recruited workers from companies and an occupational medicine clinic in Sweden. They responded to a survey, underwent neurosensory testing and completed the PPT.
RESULTS: The study recruited 225 workers with a mean (SD) HAV exposure duration of 16.7 (13.4) years. The mean (SD) result of the PPT was 12.8 (2.1) pins for the dominant han

The article reports the case of a woman working in a shoe factory who had been using vibrating tools for 5 years. Because of paresthesia in her left hand, in 1989 she underwent various diagnostic trials that revealed an initial carpal tunnel syndrome of the left wrist and a homolateral epicondylitis. Measurement of the vibrations transmitted to the hand from the vibrating tool confirmed the probability of a high risk of exposure for the hand-arm system. Such adverse effects have been described by British authors as "cumulative trauma disorders" and were confirmed in this study. The importance

OBJECTIVE: For a reliable objective diagnosis of vascular injuries in hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), the standardized cold provocation tests--finger skin temperature measurement during hand(s) immersion in cold water (FST test) and finger systolic blood pressure measurement during local cold exposure (FSBP test)--are widely used. In recent years there is a growing controversy regarding the diagnostic value of these tests. The aim of this study was to describe particularly the diagnostic performance of FST and FSBP tests, and also to focus on the problems and uncertainties regarding the te

Occupational exposure to vibration through the use of power- and pneumatic hand-tools results in cold-induced vasospasms, finger blanching, and alterations in sensorineural function. Collectively, these symptoms are referred to as hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). Currently the International Standards Organization (ISO) standard ISO 5349-1 contains a frequency-weighting curve to help workers and employers predict the risk of developing HAVS with exposure to vibration of different frequencies. However, recent epidemiological and experimental evidence suggests that this curve under-represents

BACKGROUND: Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) is a recognized symptom associated with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and is also the vascular manifestation of hand arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). The symptoms of HAVS and CTS are such that there is a significant possibility of misdiagnosis and an incorrect attribution of vascular and sensory symptoms. An understanding of the relationship between RP and CTS is essential when undertaking health surveillance of vibration-exposed workers presenting with combined vascular and sensory symptoms.
AIMS: To clarify the relationship between CTS and Raynaud's phenom

Vibration white finger or hand-arm vibration syndrome is the episodic blanching of the fingers in response to cold occurring in those who work with hand held vibrating tools. Clinically the condition differs from primary Raynaud's phenomenon as persistent paraesthesiae and pain are common in the hands and arms and these occur independently from the 'white attacks'. Symptoms can become severe enough to warrant a change of occupation. Industrial compensation may be awarded for vibration white finger but, at present, no simple or reliable objective diagnostic test is available. Calcitonin gene-re

Vibration induced damage to the peripheral circulatory system is thought to be an early stage of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) caused by occupational exposure to hand-transmitted vibration (HTV). This study investigated the mechanisms underlying vibration-induced vascular injury, focusing on the role of Piezo1, a mechanosensitive channel, and its association with the NF-κB/p65 signaling pathway. We demonstrated that vibration exposure leads to Piezo1-mediated upregulation of angiogenic chemokines, including CCL2, CCL5, CXCL1, CXCL2, and CXCL10, through the NF-κB/p65 pathway. To mimic the

This article presents the results of laboratory tests on the combined effect of whole-body vibration (WBV) and hand-arm vibration (HAV). The reactions of subjects exposed to various combinations of vibration were recorded. The vibrotactile perception threshold (VPT) test identified changes caused by exposure to vibration. Ten male subjects met the criteria of the study. There were 4 series of tests: a reference test and tests after exposure to HAV, WBV, and after simultaneous exposure to HAV and WBV. An analysis of the results (6000 ascending and descending VPTs) showed that the changes in VPT

OBJECTIVE: Currently, there is no standardized method to quantify musculoskeletal health of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). This study evaluated passive stiffness (PS) of the abductor pollicis brevis (APB) muscle among groundskeepers and examined the potential relationship of the PS with lifetime hand-arm vibration (HAV) exposure of the workers. METHODS: PS of APB muscle was measured using a myotonometer among 17 groundskeepers and 10 office workers for 3 days. Study participants’ HAV exposure, demographic information, social history, and health-related information were pulled from our pre

Hand-Arm Vibration syndrome (HAVS), usually caused by long-term use of hand-held power tools, can in certain manifestations alter the peripheral blood circulation in the hand-arm region. HAVS typically occurs after exposure to cold, causing an abnormally strong vasoconstriction of blood vessels. A pathoanatomical mechanism suggests that a reduction of the lumen of the blood vessels in VWF (Vibration White Finger) subjects, due to either hypertrophy or thickening of the vessel wall, may be at the origin of the disease. However, the direct and indirect effects of the load of the hand-held tools

Circulatory disturbances of the foot in patients with vibration syndrome were studied by measuring the skin temperature of both index fingers and great toes through a 3-min immersion of the right foot in cold water at 10 degrees C. Subjects included 11 patients with vibration-induced white finger (VWF) [VWF(+) group], 12 patients without VWF [VWF(-) group], and 20 healthy referents not exposed to vibration. Patients were all male chain saw operators who had scarcely been exposed to vibration of the foot. The prevalence of coldness felt in the upper and lower extremities was greater than 90% in
