Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorders worldwide, requiring early identification for timely intervention and to slow disease progression. However, existing diagnostic approaches, while effective at later stages, remain limited in detecting early-stage AD. Handwriting analysis has recently emerged as a non-invasive, cost-effective, and ecologically valid digital behavioral biomarker that reflects neurocognitive impairment. This review examines the role of handwriting as a neurocognitive marker for AD, focusing on integrating deep learning methodologies

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common disease of the elderly. Given the easy accessibility of handwriting samples, many researchers have proposed handwriting-based detection methods for Parkinson's disease. Extracting more discriminative features from handwriting is an important step. Although many features have been proposed in previous researches, the insight analysis of the combination of handwriting's kinematic, pressure, and angle dynamic features is lacking. Moreover, most existing feature is incompletely represented, with feature information lost. Therefore, to solve the above problems,

BACKGROUND: The relationship between handwriting and executive function has been explored in numerous studies. However, limited research has focused on the relationship between handwriting and prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity, which underpins executive function and writing processes. Additionally, differences in frontal lobe activity during writing between adults and children remain inadequately understood. This study aimed to investigate developmental changes in the prefrontal cortex and their neural basis during writing activities in children and adults.
METHODS: In this study, a pen tablet

Despite the increasing use of technology, handwriting has remained to date as an efficient means of communication. Certainly, handwriting is a critical motor skill for childrens cognitive development and academic success. This article presents a new methodology based on electromyographic signals to recognize multi-user free-style multi-stroke handwriting characters. The approach proposes using powerful Deep Learning (DL) architectures for feature extraction and sequence recognition, such as convolutional and recurrent neural networks. This framework was thoroughly evaluated, obtaining an accur

As a special kind of handwriting with a brush, Chinese calligraphic handwriting (CCH) requires a large amount of practice with high levels of concentration and emotion regulation. Previous studies have showed that long-term CCH training has positive effects physically (induced by handwriting activities) and psychologically (induced by the state of relaxation and concentration), the latter of which is similar to the effects of meditation. The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term CCH training effect on anxiety and attention, as well as brain structure. Participants were 32 individu

Despite the persistent difficulties of people with dyslexia concerning writing, few studies examine the impact of dyslexia on the dynamic aspects of written text production. Our objective is to examine the written productions of students with dyslexia (N = 21), compared with matched control students (N = 22), taking into consideration online indicators. They were asked to produce spontaneous narrative and expository texts. The written texts (N = 86) were collected using the Eye and Pen software with digitising tablets. Results show significant differences between the two groups concerning burs

Handwriting plays an important role in written communication, reading, and academic success. However, little is known about the neural correlates of handwriting in children. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a copying task, we investigated regional brain activation and functional lateralization associated with Chinese handwriting in children (N = 36, 9-11 years old), as well as their relations to reading skills. We found significant activation of the bilateral frontal motor cortices, somatosensory cortex, intraparietal sulcus (IPS), fusiform gyrus (FuG), and cerebellum dur

Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a neurological-based learning disorder that affects 5-17.5% of children. Handwriting difficulty is a prevailing symptom of dyslexia, but its neural mechanisms remain elusive. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), this study examined functional brain networks associated with handwriting in a copying task in Chinese children with DD (n = 17) and age-matched children (n = 36). We found that dyslexics showed reduced network connectivity between the sensory-motor network (SMN) and the visual network (VN), and between the default mode network (DMN) and th

Levodopa treatment does improve Parkinson's disease (PD) dysgraphia, but previous research is not in agreement about which aspects are most responsive. This study investigated the effect of levodopa on the kinematics of writing. Twenty-four patients with PD of less than 10 years duration and 25 age-matched controls were recruited. A practically defined off state method was used to assess the levodopa motor response, measured on the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale Part III. The kinematic features for six handwriting tasks involving different levels of complexity were recorded from PD p

BACKGROUND: The present study was aimed at investigating the writing parameters of writer's cramp patients and control subjects during handwriting of a test sentence in the absence of visual control.
METHODS: Eight right-handed patients with writer's cramp and eight healthy volunteers as age-matched control subjects participated in the study. The experimental task consisted in writing a test sentence repeatedly for fifty times on a pressure-sensitive digital board. The subject did not have visual control on his handwriting. The writing performance was stored on a PC and analyzed off-line.

Handwriting is a fundamental skill crucial for effective communication and learning. While previous research has demonstrated handwriting impairments in individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and developmental dyslexia (DD) separately, the impact of their comorbidity on children's handwriting abilities remains largely unexplored. This study employed a written production task and a copying task to measure handwriting speed and legibility in children with DD-only (N = 37), ADHD-only (N = 39), comorbid DD and ADHD (COM, N = 44), and typically developing children (N = 36)

Parkinson disease (PD) patients frequently experience micrographia and difficulty writing, which could potentially impact their quality of life. This study aimed to determine whether handwriting exercise could improve fine manual motor function in PD. The study was a randomized controlled trial assessing the efficacy of a 4-week handwriting exercise using a newly developed handwriting practice book. The primary endpoint was an improvement in the time used to complete the handwriting test. Secondary endpoints were accuracy of the writing performance, patient's subjective rating scale of their h

INTRODUCTION: Handwriting is a modality of language production whose cerebral substrates remain poorly known although the existence of specific regions is postulated. The description of brain damaged patients with agraphia and, more recently, several neuroimaging studies suggest the involvement of different brain regions. However, results vary with the methodological choices made and may not always discriminate between "writing-specific" and motor or linguistic processes shared with other abilities.

INTRODUCTION: Subtle PD motor abnormalities can be underappreciated in examination but are overtly present in handwriting. Spiral, meander, and wave drawings are noninvasive, low-cost methods for capturing PD motor signatures and are easily collected on a tablet. Deep learning is a natural framework to decode such features, but most handwriting-based PD classifiers have not been thoroughly optimized or tested for generalization, leaving their clinical utility unverified.

BACKGROUND: Neurodegenerative diseases (NGD) encompass a range of progressive neurological conditions, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), characterised by the gradual deterioration of neuronal structure and function. This degeneration manifests as cognitive decline, movement impairment, and dementia. Our focus in this investigation is on PD, a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain, leading to motor disturbances. Early detection of PD is paramount for enhancing quality of life through timely intervention and t

Parkinson's disease (PD), is a neural disorder that damages movement control, which is reflected by different non-motor and motor symptoms. PD is caused by the weakening of neurons that produce dopamine in the brain, and it includes symptoms like bradykinesia (delay in movements), stiffness, and tremors. People frequently suffer from loss of motor skills when the illness worsens, which has a big influence on everyday tasks like writing. Micrographia is a disorder marked by very tiny, cramped handwriting and is one of the symptoms of PD. As a reflection of the disease's wider motor impairments,
