OBJECTIVE: To evaluate temporal changes in serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and haptoglobin (Hp) concentrations in dogs with pulmonary coccidioidomycosis and assess their utility to detect remission.
METHODS: 31 client-owned dogs with newly diagnosed pulmonary coccidioidomycosis from October 2020 to February 2021 were included in a retrospective cohort study that utilized archived serum. Serum was originally obtained at diagnosis and once every 3 months after antifungal administration until either remission or 12 months. Time points were designated as baseline (T0), 3 months (T1), 6 months (T2)

Chronic hemolytic anemia found in patients with sickle cell disease promotes an excess of free extracellular and intravascular hemoglobin, triggering a series of deleterious effects such as endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and alterations in vascular tone, which lead to clinical complications. In this work, we evaluated the induced expression of haptoglobin in hepatocytes in vivo, the organism's first line of defense to control the presence of free Hb in circulation, which becomes saturated in conditions of chronic hemolysis, such as sickle cell disease. Through gene therapy applied

BACKGROUND: Chronic gingivostomatitis has been associated with increases in α1-acid glycoprotein and serum haptoglobin (Hp) in cats. However, serum amyloid A (SAA) and Hp have not been previously evaluated in cats with uncomplicated gingivitis.
OBJECTIVES: To compare SAA and Hp between cats with gingivitis and healthy cats, and to investigate the correlation between these two proteins and the severity of gingivitis.
METHODS: This was a prospective cross-sectional study. Adult, FIV- and FeLV-seronegative cats were included. The cats were allocated into two age- and sex-matched groups. The cas

This review outlines the current clinical research investigating how the haptoglobin (Hp) genetic polymorphism and stroke occurrence are implicated in sickle cell disease (SCD) pathophysiology. Hp is a blood serum glycoprotein responsible for binding and removing toxic free hemoglobin from the vasculature. The role of Hp in patients with SCD is critical in combating blood toxicity, inflammation, oxidative stress, and even stroke. Ischemic stroke occurs when a blocked vessel decreases oxygen delivery in the blood to cerebral tissue and is commonly associated with SCD. Due to the malformed red b

BACKGROUND: Haptoglobin (Hp) binds to and facilitates clearance of heme. Compared with HP 1-1 and 1-2 genotypes, HP 2-2 has a weaker binding affinity and has been linked with increased inflammation and vasospasm after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess levels of inflammatory cytokines in the context of different HP genotypes.
METHODS: Patients were enrolled among those presenting with spontaneous aneurysmal SAH. Blood was drawn at four time points; <24 hours (T1), 24-48 hours (T2), 3-5 days (T3), and 6-8 days (T4). Blood was analyzed for levels of

Haptoglobin (Hp) is a plasma protein that binds free hemoglobin and protects tissues from oxidative damage. An Hp2 allele has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular complications. On the other hand, recent studies have suggested that Hp1 allele increases risk to develop severe cerebral small vessel disease. We aimed to replicate this finding in a first-ever stroke patient cohort. Hp was genotyped by PCR and gel electrophoresis in the Helsinki Stroke Aging Memory Study in patients with DNA and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) available (SAM; n = 316). Lacunar infarcts and whit

BACKGROUND: Haptoglobin (Hp) is an acute phase protein with antioxidant, bacteriostatic, and anti-inflammatory activities. Hp proteins associated with the three major phenotypes differ in their proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory action. Inflammation and oxidative stress are both involved in most pathophysiological processes in premature infants. The objective of this study was to determine whether Hp phenotype influences clinical manifestations and sepsis incidence in the premature infants.
OBJECTIVE: Infants born before 35 weeks gestational age were prospectively evaluated for Hp phenotyp

BACKGROUND: Vasospasm is a prolonged constriction of a cerebral artery that is induced by hemoglobin after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). The subarachnoid blood clot also contains the protein haptoglobin, which acts to neutralize hemoglobin. Because the haptoglobin alpha gene is dimorphic, a person can expresses only one of three types of haptoglobin (alpha1-alpha1, alpha1-alpha2, or alpha2-alpha2) depending on the alpha subunit genes he or she inherits. Each of these three haptoglobin types has different antihemoglobin activities; therefore, haptoglobin may influence the development of vasosp

Haptoglobin is an acute-phase-protein, which is important in many diseases like infections, trauma and neoplasma. An increase in haptoglobin is induced by cytocines like IL-6 und IL-1. The normal range for plasmatic haptoglobin is 50-220 mg/dl. During pregnancy the most likely diagnosis is the HELLP- Syndrome (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets), followed by rare diagnoses like viral hepatitis or favism. We report about a 31-year-old III-gravida 0-para at 31 weeks of gestation with a decrease of haptoglobin over a period of 6 weeks (cut off: < 13 mg/dl) and without any clinica

The haptoglobin phenotypes of Sudanese patients with complicated and uncomplicated falciparum malaria, and those of uninfected randomly selected individuals, were determined by electrophoresis of sera on polyacrylamide gels followed by benzidine staining of the gels. Among 273 malaria patients, the proportions with haptoglobin phenotypes (1-1), (2-1) and (2-2) were 60.8%, 29.7% and 9.5%, respectively, and in 72 cerebral malaria patients the proportions were 63.9%, 29.2%, and 6.9%. The distribution among 208 control individuals was 26.0%, 55.8% and 18.3%, respectively. The difference between pa

Parenchymal cells were isolated from the liver of male calves, and monolayer cultures formed were treated with glucocorticoids to examine whether haptoglobin, appearance of which is associated with hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver) in cattle, is induced by steroid hormones. Without addition of dexamethasone, only trace amounts of haptoglobin were detected in culture medium. With addition of dexamethasone (10(-12) to 10(-4) M), considerable amounts of haptoglobin were released into the medium. Maximal release was observed at concentrations of 10(-8) to 10(-6) M dexamethasone. Haptoglobin release

Study included 115 women with suspicion of genital tuberculosis. Combined clinical, X-ray and laboratory examination made it possible to classify patients into 3 groups: group 1 included 44 patients with active genital tuberculosis, group 2 32 women with clinically cured tuberculosis of internal genitalia and group 3 39 women with nonspecific genital diseases. The haptoglobin-tuberculin test was given to all patients. High haptoglobin parameters before or 72 h after tuberculin administration were found only in the group of patients with active genital tuberculosis. In groups 2 and 3 the haptog

BACKGROUND: Systemic inflammation in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) contributes to age-related muscle loss or sarcopaenia. However, the relationship of plasma haptoglobin (Hp), an acute-phase reactant, with muscle and physical health in CHF is unknown.
METHODS: This study investigated the associations of plasma haptoglobin levels and phenotypes with handgrip strength (HGS), appendicular skeletal muscle index (ASMI) and physical capacity in healthy controls (n=67) and CHF patients (n=61) aged 55-73 years.
RESULTS: Patients with CHF had higher plasma Hp levels and higher proportions

Serum samples collected from 37 clinically normal bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus) and 13 abnormal bongo were tested using assays for acute-phase proteins (APPs) and by protein electrophoresis. Abnormal bongo samples (n = 27) had significantly higher levels of fibrinogen (FIB) (p < 0.001) and trending but not significantly increased haptoglobin (HP) (p = 0.07) vs. samples from normal bongo (n = 37). There were no significant differences in values for total white blood cell counts or for any of the fractions determined by protein electrophoresis. Clinically normal female bongo (n = 19) had signifi

BACKGROUND: Bee venom has been used as a therapeutic compound for various human diseases in oriental medicine; however, it can induce anaphylaxis in hypersensitive patients during treatment. Anaphylaxis is an acute allergic reaction that occurs after allergen exposure. IgE is released from immune-related cells such as mast cells and basophils during anaphylaxis. Various inflammatory mediators are also released into the bloodstream during the acute response.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify specific proteins from bee venom-hypersensitive patients.
METHODS: We analyzed the blood serum of contr

Introduction: Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide because of difficulties in early diagnosis. Aberrant glycosylation in serum proteins has been associated with many human diseases. Serum haptoglobin, a highly sialylated glycoprotein with four N-glycosylation sites, has gained considerable attention due to its potential as a signature molecule to display aberrant glycosylation in inflammatory disorders and various types of cancer. In particular, the relevance of haptoglobin glycosylation in GC has been investigated in a multifaceted way.Areas cover
