The chromite-asbestos mining leaves behind tonnes of toxic waste, contaminating nearby agricultural fields with potentially toxic elements (PTEs). Over time, wind and water erosion spread these pollutants, severely impacting the ecosystem, food chain, and human health. This study evaluates the bioaccessible (stomach and intestinal phases) and leachable forms of PTEs, emphasizing the health and dietary risks associated with PTE pollution in this region. The study result indicates that the leachable and bio-accessible PTEs concentrations in agricultural soil, mainly Cr and Ni, were higher in zon

INTRODUCTION: Poor clinical waste management and its effect on the environment is an increasingly recognised concern for global healthcare systems. Approximately two thirds of waste produced in healthcare is from the operating theatre. In the Republic of Ireland, an estimated 580,977 tonnes of hazardous waste was produced in 2019. The cost of incineration of this hazardous waste is approximately €2,125 per tonne and €935 per tonne for sterilisation. Pollution from incineration is substantial and harmful.
METHODS: A literature review was performed on the topic of hospital waste management, spe

In this study, the stabilization of tannery sludge, which produced during the physico-chemical treatment of tannery wastewaters, was examined by the addition of ladle furnace slag. Moreover, the simultaneous addition of organoclay and ladle furnace slag for the stabilization of tannery sludge was also examined. Chromium and dissolved organic carbon in the leachate of raw tannery sludge, using the EN 12457-2 standard leaching test, were found to exceed the limit values for disposal in non-hazardous and even in hazardous waste landfills, according to the EU Decision 2003/33/EC. Tannery waste (ai

Solid waste management is one of the major global environmental issues, as there is continuous increase in industrial globalization and generation of waste. Solid wastes encompass the heterogeneous mass of throwaways from the urban community as well as the homogeneous accumulations of agricultural, industrial and mineral wastes. Biomedical waste pose a significant impact on health and environment. A proper waste management system should be required to dispose hazardous biomedical waste and incineration should be the best available technology to reduce the volume of this hazardous waste. The in

Waste management poses escalating threats to environmental sustainability, particularly with municipal solid waste (MSW) growth. Incineration, a widely adopted method for reducing waste volume, produces millions of tons of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) each year. Despite its high toxicity and classification as a hazardous solid waste, its ultrafine particle size and pozzolanic activity offer potential for its use in construction materials. In this study, MSWIFA was used to replace 6%, 12%, 18% and 24% of cementitious materials, and the effect of MSWIFA substitution rate o

During the production of penicillin, a mass of waste bacterial residue is generated. In the past, the bacterial residues have been used for food additives. Unfortunately, doubts of their suitability as a feedstock have been raised because of the small amount of antibiotics and the degradation products remaining in the bacterial residues. So, penicillin bacterial residue is one of the hazardous wastes. Therefore, penicillin bacterial residue should be managed in accordance with the hazardous waste. To get a right method, the penicillin bacterial residue was characterized.

Biomedical waste (BMW) management is a crucial aspect of both human and veterinary healthcare to prevent environmental contamination and transmission of infectious diseases. Veterinary BMW, although often overlooked, comprises hazardous materials such as infectious waste, sharps, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, radioactive substances, and pathological remains. Despite its significant contribution to hazardous waste, veterinary BMW often lacks sufficient regulatory focus and compliance. Various countries have implemented regulatory frameworks, including India's Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules (2

The primary production of aluminum generates hazardous solid residues, which collectively present a critical challenge involving both environmental toxicity and strategic resource depletion. Current industry reliance on secure landfilling fails to mitigate long-term risks posed by leaching of fluorides, heavy metals, and cyanide. This approach results in significant economic loss by preventing the recovery of essential aluminum and fluorine feedstocks. The high Na/Al impurity ratio and complex chemical composition of this waste severely limit recovery, making the reclaimed compounds unsuitable

Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash (MSWIFA) is a hazardous waste characterized by a high concentration of heavy metals and a high soluble fraction of salts. It is commonly stabilised by the addition of cement. This paper proposes an alternative method of solidification/stabilisation involving room-temperature alkali activation as a low-carbon, cement-free solution. This industrially feasible method retains a waste content of over 50 wt% in the wet mix and uses the low concentrations of NaOH and sodium silicates to activate the material by adding Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GG

This study evaluated the correlation between the amount of mercury (Hg) compounds in waste phosphor powder from spent UV curing lamps and their leaching characteristics. The appropriate thermal treatment conditions and Hg content in the residue necessary to satisfy the leaching criteria for classification as non-hazardous waste were identified. The decomposition of Hg compounds by thermal treatment was also evaluated by comparing sequential extraction results based on thermal stability and leaching potential of Hg compounds. Before the thermal treatment, the Hg content in waste phosphor powder

COVID-19 has accelerated the generation of healthcare (medical) waste throughout the world. Developing countries are the most affected by this hazardous and toxic medical waste due to poor management systems. In recent years, Bangladesh has experienced increasing medical waste generation with estimated growth of 3 % per year. The existing healthcare waste management in Bangladesh is far behind the sustainable waste management concept. To achieve an effective waste management structure, Bangladesh has to implement life cycle assessment (LCA) and circular economy (CE) concepts in this area. Howe
