The chlorinated solvent trichloroethylene (TCE) is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant. The carcinogenic hazard of TCE was the subject of a 2012 evaluation by a Working Group of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Information on exposures, relevant data from epidemiologic studies, bioassays in experimental animals, and toxicity and mechanism of action studies was used to conclude that TCE is carcinogenic to humans (Group 1). This article summarizes the key evidence forming the scientific bases for the IARC classification. Exposure to TCE from environmental sources (includi

The health impacts associated with uncontrolled release of TENORM in products and wastes released in the petroleum industry are of great concern. In this study, evaluation of TENORM in the Tunisian petroleum products and wastes is presented. Fourteen products samples, twelve waste samples and three samples from the surrounding environment were collected from the Tunisian Refinery STIR site and from two onshore production oilfields. The activity concentrations of (232)Th, (226)Ra and (40)K for all samples were determined using gamma-ray spectrometry with High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detector. T

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is an industrial solvent and a common environmental contaminant detected in thousands of hazardous waste sites. Risk of exposure is a concern for workers in occupations that use TCE as well as for residents who live near industries that use TCE or who live near TCE-contaminated sites. Although renal, hepatic and carcinogenic effects of TCE have been documented, less is known about TCE impacts on reproductive functions despite epidemiology reports associating maternal TCE exposure with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Toxicological evidence suggests that the placenta mediates

Sri Lanka is an island country located in the Indian Ocean, characterized by tropical weather, with an estimated population of 21.4 million in 2017, one third of them being children. Advancing and rapidly changing technology, novel industries, consumer goods and equipment have introduced new health hazards of a chemical, biological and physical nature to future generations. The infant mortality rate has declined to around 8-9 per 100,000 since 2015. Congenital malformations were the most significant cause of neonatal death. Thus, there might be unproven environmental factors which affect infan

The past several years has seen an increased awareness of the need to conduct ecological risk assessments (ERAs) for hazardous waste sites. One technique used in ERAs involves estimating contaminant exposure to individual animals of selected species, which is then compared to a reference dose derived from the literature. Exposure estimates are conducted on those species which are representative of the different trophic levels found at the site. In many terrestrial systems, fossorial (burrowing) vertebrates are found in both lower and upper trophic levels. As part of the ERA conducted for Site

Seed germination and root elongation test is used to evaluate hazardous waste sites and to assess toxicity of organic and inorganic compounds. Paper substrate, especially circular filter paper placed inside a Petri dish has long been used for this test. Same reports indicate that filter paper might interfere with the toxicity of inorganic substances, especially metal cations. This study evaluate toxicity of Cd, Pb, Ni, Cu on lettuce, broccoli, tomato and radish seed using two bed material: agar and filter paper. The results show that percent germination is not affected by substrates; vice vers

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a small halogenated compound that has been used extensively as a metal degreaser and a solvent for the past 100 years. As a result of its widespread use, TCE can be found in the groundwater of about one-third of the hazardous waste sites on the United States Environmental Protection Agency's National Priorities List. Human exposure to TCE in the environmental media is of concern because TCE has been found to be carcinogenic in laboratory animals. This paper describes the development and validation of a HS-SPME-GC/MS method for determination of TCE in rat plasma. The

High-saturation pools of dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) are long-term sources of groundwater contamination at many hazardous-waste sites. DNAPL pools consist of a high saturation zone with slow dissolution overlaid by a transition zone with lower saturations and more rapid dissolution. Effects of biological activity on pool dissolution must be understood to evaluate and implement bioremediation strategies. Bioenhanced dissolution of tetrachloroethene (PCE) in transition zones of high-saturation pools was investigated in a custom-designed 5-cm flow cell. Experiments were conducted to cha

Skin is a primary route of exposure to phenol, a major chemical found in hazardous waste sites. The effect of soil adsorption on the dermal bioavailability of phenol was assessed by applying [14C]phenol alone (P) or with sandy (P-S) or clay (P-C) soil to dermatomed male pig skin samples in flow-through diffusion cells. Maximum penetration of P-S and P-C was significantly decreased by one-half and by two-thirds, respectively, compared to P. Furthermore, the penetration of phenol into receptor fluid and the amount bound to skin were significantly lower when phenol was adsorbed to either soil ver

Unlike acidic sulfide mine wastes, where metal/loid mobility and bioaccessibility has been widely studied, less attention has been paid to alkaline cyanide heap leaching wastes. Thus, the main goal of this study is to evaluate the mobility and bioaccessibility of metal/loids in Fe-rich (up to 55%) mine wastes resulting from historical cyanide leaching activities. Wastes are mainly composed of oxides/oxyhydroxides (i.e. goethite and hematite), oxyhydroxisulfates (i.e. jarosite), sulfates (i.e., gypsum, evaporitic sulfate salts), carbonates (i.e., calcite, siderite) and quartz, with noticeable c

Nuclear hazards, linked to both U.S. weapons programs and civilian nuclear power, pose substantial environment justice issues. Nuclear power plant (NPP) reactors produce low-level ionizing radiation, high level nuclear waste, and are subject to catastrophic contamination events. Justice concerns include plant locations and the large potentially exposed populations, as well as issues in siting, nuclear safety, and barriers to public participation. Other justice issues relate to extensive contamination in the U.S. nuclear weapons complex, and the mining and processing industries that have suppor

Municipal solid waste (MSW) generated in Ahmedabad, India, and the surrounding area is dumped at the Pirana site; rag pickers collect materials for re-sale. We have compared genotoxicity and oxidative stress in samples from women rag pickers working at this site, with women involved only in door-to-door waste picking (in residential areas near the university campus) as "controls". The buccal Cytokinesis-Block Micronucleus (CBMN) assay showed significantly higher frequencies of Micronucleus (MN), Nucleoplasmic Bridges (NPB), and Nuclear Buds (NB) in the rag pickers than in the "controls". The diversity among a set of bacterial strains that have the capacity to degrade total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in soil contaminated with oily sludge (hazardous hydrocarbon waste from oil refineries) was determined. TPH is composed of alkane, aromatics, nitrogen-, sulfur-, and oxygen-containing compound, and asphaltene fractions of crude oil. The 150 bacterial isolates which could degrade TPH were isolated from soil samples obtained from diverse geoclimatic regions of India. All the isolates were biochemically characterized and identified with a Biolog microbial identification system and b

This paper presents the temporal variation in surface-level ozone (O3) measured at Gummidipoondi near Chennai, Tamilnadu. The site chosen for the present study has high potential for ozone generation sources, such as vehicular traffic and industrial activities. The site is also located near a hazardous waste management facility. The key sources of nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are considered to be an important precursor of O3, include hazardous waste incineration, trucks bringing the hazardous wastes, and vehicles plying on the nearby National Highway 16 (NH 16). The measurements clearly showed

The leachates from 22 municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill sites in Southern Poland were characterized by evaluation of chemical, microbiological and ecotoxicological parameters. Chemical analyses were mainly focused on the identification of the priority hazardous substances according to Directive on Priority Substances, 2008/105/EC (a daughter directive of the WFD) in leachates. As showed, only five substances (Cd, Hg, hexachlorobutadiene, pentachlorobenzene and PAHs) were detected in the leachates. The compounds tested were absent or present at very low concentrations. Among them, only PAHs

Human-generated waste, including infectious healthcare waste, poses significant risks to public health and the environment. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the global production of infectious waste, emphasizing the need for safe and sustainable waste management practices. While autoclaves are commonly used for on-site disposal, alternative methods like ozone gas and UV-C radiation offer environmentally friendly options that effectively eliminate pathogens without leaving toxic residues. Inadequate waste management can contribute to disease transmission, while open burning releases harmful
