Arthroplasty with a metal radial head for unreconstructible fractures of the radial head.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of unreconstructible comminuted fractures of the radial head remains controversial. There is limited information on the outcome of management of these injuries with arthroplasty with a metal radial head implant. METHODS: The functional outcomes of arthroplasties with a metal radial head implant for the treatment of twenty-five displaced, unreconstructible fractures of the radial head in twenty-four consecutive patients (mean age, fifty-four years) were evaluated at a mean of thirty-nine months (minimum, two years). There were ten Mason type-III and fifteen Mason-Johnston

The role of the long head of biceps brachii in the stabilization of the head of the humerus.

The role of the tendon of the long head of the biceps in the stabilization of the head of the humerus was studied in 15 freely hanging anatomic specimen shoulders. Upward migration of the humeral head was measured by noting any reduction in the acromiohumeral distance in roentgenograms of the shoulder. There was a statistically significant decrease in the acromiohumeral interval on tensing the short head of biceps, but there was no significant change in the interval on tensing either the long head or both heads of the biceps brachii. Severing the tendon of the long head while both the heads we

Motorcycling and head injury: admissions to a regional head injury unit.

In a 5-year period during which 7,178 patients with head injury were admitted to a regional head injury unit, 191 motorcyclists (2.7%) were admitted with head injuries of which 76% were classified as minor, 6% as moderate and 18% as severe (in coma). Two thirds of the patients were aged 20 years or less. Eighty-two riders (43%) had some form of facial or scalp trauma and 37 (19%) sustained skull fracture. Intracranial haematomas requiring surgical evacuation were detected in 3 of the minor head injuries (2%), 2 of the moderate injuries (17%) and 11 of the severely head injured patients (32%).

Purposeful Heading in Youth Soccer: Time to Use Our Heads.

Repeated purposeful heading in soccer has come under increased scrutiny as concerns surrounding the association with long-term neurodegenerative disorders in retired players continues to grow. Whilst a causal link between heading and brain health has not been established, the 'Precautionary Principle' supports the notion that soccer governing bodies and associations should consider implementing pragmatic strategies, which can reduce head impact during purposeful heading in youth soccer whilst this relationship is being investigated. This viewpoint discusses the current evidence to support low-

What are Head Cavities? - A History of Studies on Vertebrate Head Segmentation.

Motivated by the discovery of segmental epithelial coeloms, or "head cavities," in elasmobranch embryos toward the end of the 19th century, the debate over the presence of mesodermal segments in the vertebrate head became a central problem in comparative embryology. The classical segmental view assumed only one type of metamerism in the vertebrate head, in which each metamere was thought to contain one head somite and one pharyngeal arch, innervated by a set of cranial nerves serially homologous to dorsal and ventral roots of spinal nerves. The non-segmental view, on the other hand, rejected t

Reduced head-neck offset in nontraumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head.

INTRODUCTION: Risk factors for nontraumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head have in common that they trigger intravascular coagulation and thus lead to devascularization of the femoral head. In part of the patients, however, no risk factors seem to be evident. Mechanical reasons contributing to nontraumatic osteonecrosis have not been discussed so far. We hypothesized that recurrent traumatization of the vessels supplying the femoral head by a cam-type mechanism as in femoroacetabular impingement could add to intravascular coagulation. We, therefore, asked whether structural abnormalities at

Pancreatic head resection for noninflammatory benign lesions of the head of the pancreas.

INTRODUCTION: Duodenum-preserving pancreatic head resection (DPPHR) has been safely performed in patients with chronic pancreatitis. The procedure has rarely been used to remove benign or borderline lesions of the head of the pancreas. AIMS: To review our experience with 13 patients who underwent DPPHR and to review reports in the literature on the same subject. METHODOLOGY: From October 1991 to September 2000, 13 patients underwent DPPHR to resect endocrine pancreatic tumors (n = 4), beta cell hyperplasia (n = 1), pancreatic pseudocysts (n = 2), serous cystadenomas (n = 3), congenital (n =

The Canadian CT Head Rule for patients with minor head injury.

BACKGROUND: There is much controversy about the use of computed tomography (CT) for patients with minor head injury. We aimed to develop a highly sensitive clinical decision rule for use of CT in patients with minor head injuries. METHODS: We carried out this prospective cohort study in the emergency departments of ten large Canadian hospitals and included consecutive adults who presented with a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of 13-15 after head injury. We did standardised clinical assessments before the CT scan. The main outcome measures were need for neurological intervention and clinically

Video head impulse and suppression head impulse test in vestibular migraine.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular Migraine (VM) is a frequent cause of recurrent spontaneous vertigo. While some report a normal Video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) in VM, others observed abnormal results on this test. Whether or not methodological discrepancies could be the cause of these differences is not known. There are 2 vHIT methods: subjects fixating an earth-fixed target (HIMP paradigm) or a head-fixed target, the suppression head impulse test (SHIMP paradigm). OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to compare VM patients against healthy controls on both HIMP and SHIMP in order to unravel any differenc

Efficacy of artificial femoral head replacement for femoral head avascular necrosis.

BACKGROUND: Femoral head avascular necrosis (FHAN) is one of the most common progressive orthopedic disorders. Previous studies have reported that artificial femoral head replacement (AFHR) can effectively treat patients with FHAN. However, no systematic review has investigated the efficacy of AFHR for FHAN. This study will assess the efficacy of AFHR for patients with FHAN. METHODS: We will search MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure up to March 1, 2019 without any restrictions. Condylar head remodeling compensating for condylar head displacement by orthognathic surgery.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between kind of condylar displacement due to orthognathic surgery and the subsequent adaptive condylar head remodeling. The sample in this retrospective cohort study consisted of 30 patients (12 female and 18 male; mean age 22.7 y) with skeletal Class III malocclusion who underwent bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO). Three-dimensional superimpositions of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan derived images from immediately after and 6 months after surgery were to reveal the type of remodeling, while images from before a

Head-to-Head Comparison of Two SARS-CoV-2 Serology Assays.

BACKGROUND: While molecular techniques remain the gold standard for diagnosis of acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, serological tests have the unique potential to ascertain how much of the population has been exposed to the COVID-19 pathogen. There have been limited published studies to date documenting the performance of SARS-CoV-2 antibody assays. METHODS: We compared the DiaSorin Liaison SARS-CoV-2 S1/S2 IgG and Roche Diagnostics Elecsys Anti-SARS-CoV-2 assays using 228 samples spanning patients with positive PCR for SARS-CoV-2, patients with compatible symptoms but negative PCR, pre-COVID specim

Gender differences in head-neck segment dynamic stabilization during head acceleration.

PURPOSE: Recent epidemiological research has revealed that gender differences exist in concussion incidence but no study has investigated why females may be at greater risk of concussion. Our purpose was to determine whether gender differences existed in head-neck segment kinematic and neuromuscular control variables responses to an external force application with and without neck muscle preactivation. METHODS: Forty (20 females and 20 males) physically active volunteers participated in the study. The independent variables were gender, force application (known vs unknown), and force direction

Head impact magnitudes that occur from purposeful soccer heading depend on the game scenario and head impact location.

PURPOSE: This study quantified the linear and angular kinematics that result from purposeful heading during youth soccer games, and the influence of game scenario and head impact location on these magnitudes. METHOD: This observational study recruited thirty-six female soccer players (13.4 ± 0.9 years old) from three elite youth soccer teams (U13, U14, U15) and followed for an entire soccer season. Players wore wireless sensors during each game to quantify head impact magnitudes. A total of 60 regular season games (20 games per team) were video recorded, and purposeful heading events were cat
