The head and neck regions, rich in lymph nodes, are common initial sites for nodal and extranodal hematolymphoid neoplasms, particularly B-cell neoplasms. Lymphomas, including Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's types, range from indolent to aggressive and often affect the oral and maxillofacial areas. Plasma cell neoplasms, such as solitary bone plasmacytoma (SBP) and solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma (SEP), must be distinguished from multiple myeloma (MM) due to varied treatment modalities. Diagnosing these neoplasms is challenging, requiring thorough examination. Timely recognition and managemen

OBJECTIVE: To define swallowing dysfunctions in head and neck cancer patients with respect to tumor site.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A consecutive cohort of 52 patients with stage III-IV head and neck cancer without prior tracheotomy or treatment were studied according to tumor site: oral cavity (n = 8), oropharynx (n = 8), hypopharynx (n = 13) and larynx (23). All patients underwent nasoendoscopy prior to treatment. Swallowing function (dysphagia, aspiration and Swallowing Performance Status Seale score) was analyzed with reference to tumor localization using chi 2 and Fisher exact tests.

Head and neck imaging is an intimidating subject for many radiologists because of the complex anatomy and potentially serious consequences of delayed or improper diagnosis of the diverse abnormalities involving this region. The purpose of this article is to help radiologists to understand the intricate anatomy of the head and neck and to review the imaging appearances of a variety of nontraumatic head and neck conditions that bring patients to the emergency department, including acute infectious and inflammatory diseases and acute complications of head and neck neoplasms. These conditions are

A meta-analysis was performed on data from the Washington University Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Tumor Registry and 24 studies reporting synchronous and metachronous malignancies in head and neck cancer patients. The overall second malignant tumor (second primary) prevalence was 14.2% in 40,287 patients, the majority of tumors being metachronous. Site relationships between index tumors and second primaries revealed significantly high risks along the digestive tract axis or the respiratory tract axis, although lung second primaries were prevalent in all groups. Classification of head and neck tumors has evolved in recent decades including a widespread application of molecular testing in tumors of the salivary glands, sinonasal tract, oropharynx, nasopharynx, and soft tissue. Availability of new molecular techniques allowed for the definition of multiple novel tumor types unique to head and neck sites. Moreover, the expanding spectrum of immunohistochemical markers facilitates a rapid identification of diagnostic molecular abnormalities. As such, it is currently possible for head and neck pathologists to benefit from a molecularly defined classificati

Malignant lymphomas represent approximately 5% of all malignant neoplasms of the head and neck. The head and neck region is the second most frequent anatomical site of extra-nodal lymphomas (after the gastrointestinal tract). Most are non-Hodgkin's lymphomas of B-cell lineage, and overall diffuse large B-cell lymphoma is the most common type. They can present in highly variable appearances in different anatomical subsites in the head and neck. There is little literature on their imaging appearances on different imaging methods including ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed to

Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS), traditionally used for non-melanoma skin cancers, has been used for some cases of melanoma. Using the TriNetX (TriNetX, LLC, Cambridge, MA, USA) database, two analyses were performed. The first compared wide local excision (WLE) and MMS for the management of malignant melanoma (MM) of the face, scalp, and neck. The second analysis compared WLE and melanoma in situ (MIS) of the same anatomical areas. WLE was associated with a significantly higher incidence of secondary and unspecified malignant neoplasms of the lymph nodes of the head and neck and secondary mali

Electron beam therapy with its high energy capabilities appears promising as a therapeutic modality in head and neck neoplasms. Over a 10-year period, 153 cases of head and neck neoplasms involving the alveolar ridge, floor of mouth, buccal mucosa, retromolar trigone, tonsil, parotid, tongue, and pharynx were treated. The pharyngeal group was removed from consideration because of the unsuitability of this lesion for single port therapy. Normal standard doses and time-dose fractions are included as a basis for treatment comparison, and the influence of stage on survival is noted. Survival and t

The historical development of additional primary neoplasms of the esophagus is traced. To determine the incidence and time of appearance of these esophageal malignancies, a retrospective study of 790 head and neck cancer patients was conducted. In addition, a prospective study of 268 head and neck cancer patients was undertaken to determine the optimum diagnostic approach for esophageal neoplasms. All patients in the prospective study had a pharyngoesophagogram plus esophagoscopy as part of the initial diagnostic evaluation. The false negative rate of the pharyngoesophagogram was 72.2% in pati

Background: Ossifying fibromyxoid tumors (OFMTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms with behaviors ranging from benign to malignant. Although most occur in the extremities and trunk, 9-13% are found in the head and neck, such as the oral cavity, scalp, and calvarium. Diagnosis is challenging due to their rarity and histological similarity to other neoplasms. This review synthesizes evidence on the clinical presentation, diagnostic features, and treatment outcomes of OFMTs in the head and neck, focusing on surgical management and adjuvant therapies. Methods: A systematic review was conducted accord

Head and neck cancer typically refers to epithelial malignancies of the upper aerodigestive tract and may include neoplasms of the thyroid, salivary glands, and soft tissue, bone sarcomas, and skin cancers. Two-thirds of patients present with advanced disease involving regional lymph nodes at the time of diagnosis. A thorough history and detailed examination are integral to oncologic staging and treatment planning. This article begins with an overview of the head and neck examination (with special attention to detailed findings with clinical implications), followed by a discussion of the major

Lipomas are benign soft tissue neoplasms, involving the head and neck in roughly 15% of cases. We review a patient who presented with a palpable, anterior neck mass and progressive dysphagia, throat clearing, and dysphonia. He was found to have two simultaneous rare sites for head and neck lipomas: vallecular and intermuscular, anterior neck. He elected for surgical resection of both masses resulting in significant symptom improvement. Though originally referred for evaluation of an anterior neck mass, we underscore the importance of prompt investigation with reported laryngeal symptoms. We pr

Malignant sublingual gland neoplasms are rare, early-stage neoplasms presenting as painless non-ulcerated masses in the antero-lateral floor of the mouth. The majority of patients present with advanced disease, with symptoms of pain or anaesthesia of the tongue. Malignant minor salivary gland neoplasms are more common, the majority (>80%) of which present in the oral cavity, most frequently in the palatal area, as painless masses or as obstructive symptoms in the head and neck region. The most frequent pathologies are adenoid cystic carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (>85%), with the major

Malignancies of the head and neck are not uncommon in the Far East due to the habit of betel-nut chewing. The development of a second primary neoplasm is a constant fear for those who have had successful treatment of a primary cancer. A total of 82 patients, treated with microvascular reconstruction after surgical resection of head and neck cancer, were studied retrospectively. Twenty-one patients who had repeated reconstructive microsurgery for a second primary head and neck malignancy were enrolled as the study group. Sixty-one patients treated for the first-diagnosed malignancy were conside

Neutropenic enterocolitis is a recognized complication of immunosuppression or chemotherapy for leukemia. It presents as severe abdominal pain and tenderness, fever, and diarrhea associated with granulocytopenia. Gastrointestinal symptoms associated with chemotherapy for head and neck neoplasms include nausea and emesis, but not acute abdominal distress. We present, to our knowledge, the first case of neutropenic enterocolitis in a patient receiving cisplatin and fluorouracil chemotherapy for metastatic head and neck cancer.

BACKGROUND: Patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma are at high risk for synchronous and/or metachronous esophageal cancer. The present study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and safety of unsedated transnasal endoscopy (TNE) for screening these high-risk patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Consecutive high-risk patients including patients with suspicious or diagnosed head and neck cancer or patients with alarming symptoms received screening TNE. All endoscopic procedures, including sequential conventional white-light, narrow-band imaging, and Lugol chromoendoscopy, were done without

Actinomycotic infections of the head and neck region are rare and frequently present a confusing clinical picture. We document a case of actinomycosis that simulated a neoplasm of the infraorbital nerve, both clinically and surgically. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of actinomycosis involving this nerve. Correct diagnosis of actinomycotic infection in the head and neck relies most heavily on clinical suspicion. It is, therefore, imperative for the head and neck surgeon to be familiar with the etiology of this infection and its various modes of presentation as well as it

Patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) are at considerable risk of developing second primary neoplasms. However, mucosal squamous cell cancers (SCCs) of the head and neck have not been reported. We review the data of 7 patients with mucosal SCC of the head and neck that presented as metachronous second primary tumours in patients with CML. All 7 patients were men (median age 48 years, range 31-67) (site:oral cavity n=6, hypopharynx n=1). The median interval between diagnosis of CML and head neck cancer was 6 years (range 2-15). Treatment was curative in 4 and palliative in 3. At median

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are one of the most complex and rare neoplasms that have been discovered, with varying behavior in different cases. They mostly arise in the thoracic and abdominal cavity, the lungs, retroperitoneum, and extremities. They can also be detected in the head and neck area. IMTs have no age or gender preference which makes them tougher to anticipate. Head and neck IMTs are benign neoplasms with locally aggressive behavior and a low risk of metastatic spread. They have an unknown etiology, and they resemble malignant lesions radiologically. In this case rep

Sera collected from patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, patients with other head and neck neoplasms, patients with infectious mononucleosis (IM), and healthy donors were titrated for antibodies (IgM, IgG, IgA) against Epstein-Barr-Virus (EBV) specific antigens (VCA, EA, EBNA) by indirect and by antikomplementary immunfluorescence. NPC-patients develop significantly high anti-EBV titers of IgG and IgA. In contrast patients with neoplasms (mainly carcinomas) arising in sites of the head and neck other than the nasopharynx revealed a lower incidence of high titers. Our results emphasize the r
