Mother-Daughter Communication about Sexual Behavior and Reproductive Health in Females with Chronic Health Conditions.

PURPOSE: Females with chronic health conditions (CHCs) engage in risky sexual behavior at least as frequently as their healthy counterparts. Among healthy youth, mother-daughter communication about sexual behavior and reproductive health protects against risky sexual behavior. Yet, little is known about the nature of this type of communication in female adolescents with CHCs or factors that contribute to communication. This study described mother-daughter communication frequency, timing, and comfort and examined the role of demographic/disease factors and maternal outcome expectancy (OE), in c

Cohort profile: the Korean Youth Health Behavior Panel Survey (KYHPS).

The identification of factors that predispose adolescents to adopt healthy lifestyles is essential because this developmental stage shapes long-term health trajectories. To address the lack of longitudinal data on adolescent health in Korea, the Korean Youth Health Behavior Panel Survey (KYHPS) was established in 2019. The KYHPS recruited 5,051 sixth-grade students from 260 elementary schools nationwide, excluding Jeju, and follows them annually for 10 years using a stratified multistage probability sampling design. Data were collected using tablet-assisted self-interviews, and the questionnai

Equity in Health-Seeking Behavior of Groups Using Different Transportations.

The equity of health-seeking behaviors of groups using different transportations is an important metric for health outcome disparities among them. Recently, smart card data and taxi trajectory data have been used extensively but separately to quantify the spatiotemporal patterns of health-seeking behavior and healthcare accessibility. However, the differences in health-seeking behavior among groups by different transportations have hitherto received scant attention from scholars. To fill the gap, this paper aimed to investigate the equity in health-seeking behavior of groups using different tr

Gambling: an addictive behavior with health and primary care implications.

Over the past several decades, and particularly during the last 10 to 15 years, there has been a rapid increase in the accessibility of legalized gambling in the United States and other parts of the world. Few studies have systematically explored the relationships between patterns of gambling and health status. Existing data support the notion that some gambling behaviors, particularly problem and pathological gambling, are associated with nongambling health problems. The purpose of this article is to provide a perspective on the relationship between gambling behaviors and substance use disord

Health risk behavior of rural secondary school students in Zimbabwe.

A socioculturally appropriate health risk behavior instrument, modeled after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), was administered to 717 secondary school students in a rural area of Zimbabwe. Comparisons of risk behaviors by gender and school grade were made using univariate procedures and multiple logistic regression. Males were significantly more likely than females to have had sexual intercourse (odds ratio = 5.02, p < .0001) and to report drug use behaviors. Males also were significantly more likely to report early initiation (by age 13

Health-seeking behavior among hematuria patients in Jordan: the case of the Health Belief Model.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Despite broad application of the Health Belief Model (HBM) across a range of clinical contexts, its relevance to patients actively presenting with hematuria remains unexplored. Hematuria may stem from minor self-resolving causes or serious malignancies requiring early intervention. This study aimed to characterize health-seeking behavior in this population and to determine which clinical and belief-based factors predict whether patients pursue medical evaluation. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study on 150 patients presented with hematuria, enrolled by convenie

Effects of perceived racial discrimination on health status and health behavior: a differential mediation hypothesis.

OBJECTIVE: Prospective data tested a "differential mediation" hypothesis: The relations (found in previous research) between perceived racial discrimination and physical health status versus health-impairing behavior (problematic substance use) are mediated by two different types of affective reactions, internalizing and externalizing. METHOD: The sample included 680 African American women from the Family and Community Health Study (M age = 37 years at Time 1; 45 years at Time 4). Four waves of data were analyzed. Perceived discrimination was assessed, along with anxiety and depression (inter

Dizziness: anxiety, health care utilization and health behavior--results from a representative German community survey.

BACKGROUND: Due to the lack of epidemiological data on the relation of dizziness and anxiety, we investigated the prevalence of dizziness and anxiety in a representative sample of the German population. We explored the consequences of comorbid anxiety for emotional distress, functional impairment, health care utilization, and health behavior in dizziness. METHODS: By the end of 2006, we surveyed a total of 1287 persons between 14 and 90 years of age in their homes by trained interviewers with standardized self-rating questionnaires on anxiety (Patient Health Questionnaire, Generalized Anxiety

Emergency Department Behavioral Health Observation and Stabilization.

Emergency department visits for pediatric mental health crises have risen sharply in recent years, while inpatient psychiatric bed capacity has declined, resulting in prolonged patient boarding. This article describes the development and implementation of behavioral health observation (BHO) models to address this gap in care. BHO provides time-limited, intensive psychiatric assessment and crisis stabilization with a multidisciplinary team focused on symptom reduction, diagnostic clarification, and structured disposition planning for patients. The article outlines patient selection, interdiscip
