Racial Health Equity Plans in the 30 Largest US Cities.

BACKGROUND: Racial inequities in life expectancy vary significantly across US cities, with city-level gaps ranging from zero to more than 10 years. Given that these inequities are rooted in racism and maintained through social structures and policies, population-level solutions are needed. Local health departments (LHD) are well-situated to lead these types of changes. METHODS: We conducted an environmental scan and document review of formal health plans of the LHDs with jurisdictions covering the 30 most populous US cities. We assessed the inclusion of equity priorities and specific and meas

Addressing neglected tropical diseases in Africa: a health equity perspective.

Africa accounts for over one-third of the global burden of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Although continental efforts have been made to combat these diseases, there still exists a significant gap in the fight, ranging from a lack of data to multisectoral participation and, most critically, health inequity. Here, we assess the effort made to combat challenges caused by health disparities to prevent and control neglected tropical diseases. This article engages a health equity view to addressing the need for inclusion in achieving universal health coverage towards eradicating NTDs and outli

Equity in Health-Seeking Behavior of Groups Using Different Transportations.

The equity of health-seeking behaviors of groups using different transportations is an important metric for health outcome disparities among them. Recently, smart card data and taxi trajectory data have been used extensively but separately to quantify the spatiotemporal patterns of health-seeking behavior and healthcare accessibility. However, the differences in health-seeking behavior among groups by different transportations have hitherto received scant attention from scholars. To fill the gap, this paper aimed to investigate the equity in health-seeking behavior of groups using different tr

Health Equity in Pediatric Drug Development: Translating Aspiration into Operation.

The concept of health equity-the attainment of the highest possible level of health for all members of society-requires equitable access to all aspects of healthcare, including pediatric drug development. However, many communities are under-represented in pediatric drug development programs. Barriers to participation include geographic, economic, racial/ethnic bias, legal, cultural, linguistic, and other factors. While there is no "one size fits all" approach to addressing these barriers, community engagement and collaboration is recognized by the Centers for Disease Control, the World Health

Advancing health equity through the National Comprehensive Cancer Control Program.

Achieving health equity requires addressing social determinants of health. Promoting health equity as it relates to cancer control is one of six priorities of the National Comprehensive Cancer Control Program (NCCCP). This article describes recent activities implemented by three NCCCP awardees (North-west Portland Area Indian Health Board, Kansas, Michigan) and the CDC-funded National Behavior Health Network (NBHN), whose aim is to reduce health disparities among those with mental health and/or substance disorders. North-west Portland administered tribal surveys to help better understand triba

Advancing brain health equity with Indigenous peoples: A critical imperative.

Indigenous communities hold rich knowledges, cultural practices, and kinship networks that sustain cognitive resilience and nurture brain health across the life course. Yet these enduring strengths are often obscured by biomedical models that overlook the structural determinants of health-including the cumulative effects of colonization, educational inequity, and socioeconomic disadvantage-that diminish brain health. Accordingly, dementia disproportionately affects Indigenous populations globally, often presenting with earlier onset and higher prevalence compared to non-Indigenous groups. This

Ten Core Concepts for Ensuring Data Equity in Public Health.

IMPORTANCE: Public health decisions increasingly rely on large-scale data and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and mobile health. However, many populations-including those in rural areas, with disabilities, experiencing homelessness, or living in low- and middle-income regions of the world-remain underrepresented in health datasets, leading to biased findings and suboptimal health outcomes for certain subgroups. Addressing data inequities is critical to ensuring that technological and digital advances improve health outcomes for all. OBSERVATIONS: This article proposes 10

Resilience and Concussion Recovery in Minority Women: Promoting Health Equity.

Resilience is associated with the degree to which post-concussion symptoms (PCS) are experienced. However, the role of resilience in the recovery trajectory of minority women, who tend to have prolonged concussion recovery, is poorly characterized. We evaluated the association between resilience and PCS, to determine if the association differed by race. A secondary data analysis was performed. Resilience was assessed using the Resilience Scale and PCS with the Rivermead questionnaire. Both variables were evaluated 6-10 weeks post-injury. Baseline demographics, spearman correlation, and multiva

Actionable Solutions to Achieve Health Equity in Chronic Liver Disease.

There are well-described racial and ethnic disparities in the burden of chronic liver diseases. Hispanic persons are at highest risk for developing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, the fastest growing cause of liver disease. Hepatitis B disproportionately affects persons of Asian or African descent. The highest rates of hepatitis C occur in American Indian and Alaskan Native populations. In addition to disparities in disease burden, there are also marked racial and ethnic disparities in access to treatments, including liver transplantation. Disparities also exist by gender and geography, espe

Gender equity and public health outcomes: The COVID-19 experience.

This paper extends the growing research on the impact of gender equity on public health outcomes using the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic as its research setting. Specifically, it introduces a conceptual model incorporating the impact of gender equity and human development on women's representation in legislature and public health expenditure, and their combined impact with human environment (population density, aging population and urban population) on important public health outcomes in the Covid-19 context, including the total number of tests, diagnosed, active and critical cases, and deaths. Self-study tool for integrating health equity into Health in All Policies (HiAP) initiatives.

SETTING: Setting. Health system leaders in Canada recognise that quality improvement alone cannot address health inequities. Intersectoral action, which involves coordination and collaboration across public, private, and third-sector organisations, can improve the distribution of social determinants of health (SDOH) and thereby, health equity. While Health in All Policies (HiAP) promotes this approach, critiques and empirical data highlight implementation gaps over whether health equity is actually being improved. The potential for HiAP initiatives to reduce health inequities can be strengthen

Umoja Health: Building Community Coalitions to Achieve Health Equity From COVID-19 to Cancer.

Umoja Health (UH) is a community-led approach to address long-standing disparities in health. UH was founded in 2020 at the request of members of the University of California, San Francisco Cancer Center Community Advisory Board. UH started with a focus on COVID-19 testing in San Francisco Bay Area Black/African American communities and evolved to address chronic disease and cancer in diverse communities. We detail UH's approach to addressing the separation between public health and health care, highlighting the coalition's effects on local health equity. (Am J Public Health. 2026;116(3):312-3

Mapping Neighborhood Health Geomarkers To Clinical Care Decisions To Promote Equity In Child Health.

Health disparities, which can be understood as disadvantages in health associated with one's social, racial, economic, or physical environment, originate in childhood and persist across an individual's life course. One's neighborhood may drive or influence these disparities. Information on neighborhoods that can characterize their risks-what we call place-based risks-is rarely used in patient care. Community-level data, however, could inform and personalize interventions such as arranging for mold removal from the home of a person with asthma from the moment that person's address is recorded a

Health Equity Assessment Toolkit (HEAT): software for exploring and comparing health inequalities in countries.

BACKGROUND: It is widely recognised that the pursuit of sustainable development cannot be accomplished without addressing inequality, or observed differences between subgroups of a population. Monitoring health inequalities allows for the identification of health topics where major group differences exist, dimensions of inequality that must be prioritised to effect improvements in multiple health domains, and also population subgroups that are multiply disadvantaged. While availability of data to monitor health inequalities is gradually improving, there is a commensurate need to increase, with

Why Public Health Nurses Matter: Bringing Specialized Knowledge and Skills to Advancing Health Equity.

Research is needed to better understand how public health nurses (PHNs) contribute to promoting health equity in communities. Our study aimed to fill this gap by exploring what activities PHNs describe they undertake in advancing health equity as well as examining their skills, proficiencies, and training needs specific to health equity work. We collected qualitative data via interviews with 18 PHNs across the US and developed major themes using a thematic analysis approach. We also analyzed quantitative survey data to compare health equity competencies among PHNs versus non-PHNs in local heal

Promoting Health Equity for Children With Special Health Care Needs and Child Welfare Involvement.

Noah, an 18-month-old infant with trisomy 21, was brought to the emergency department for adenovirus bronchiolitis. He was found to meet criteria for severe malnutrition, and his medical team called Child Protective Services (CPS) with concern for neglect. He remained hospitalized for 1 month while a safe discharge was coordinated by the medical and CPS teams. Through this case, we explore racism as a root cause of discharge delays among children with special health care needs who interact with the child welfare system. Our discussion delves into the origins and consequences of racial dispropo

A Health Equity Study of Heart Health Promotion in Black Adults: Cultural Strengths and Heart Health Behaviors.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the Black population, accounting for over 22% of fatalities. Health equity science aims to explore this for evidence of social determinants that can eliminate cardiovascular health disparities. METHODS: This study explored associations between three American Heart Association constructs of positive psychological health that reflect cultural strengths (environmental well-being, Black identity, and spirituality) with three modifiable health behaviors (blood pressure checking, exercise, and physical activity) in 470 Black adul

Health equity is the goal of medical education: Implications for assessment validity.

INTRODUCTION: Prevailing health inequities, viewed as a matter of social justice, have catalysed an intentionality about ensuring that medical graduates can contribute to more equitable health outcomes. Medical education programmes are grappling with what this means for the assessment imperative. Attention has been given to criteria for judging assessment quality, with validity remaining an important criterion. In this paper, we explore the implications of health equity for validity and ask whether plans of assessment that do not provide evidence of students' capacity to act to advance health
