Validation of the mental health continuum: Short form among Canadian Armed Forces personnel.

BACKGROUND: Compared to the general Canadian population, military members exhibit a higher prevalence of depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. However, there is a paucity of research investigating the extent to which military members experience positive mental health. Validation of positive mental health measures, including the Mental Health Continuum - Short Form (MHC-SF), is necessary to determine whether well-being can be assessed in a valid and reliable manner among Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) military members. The purpose of this research was to asse

Hair cortisol change at COVID-19 pandemic onset predicts burnout among health personnel.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has put chronic pressure on worldwide healthcare systems. While the literature regarding the prevalence of psychological distress and associated risk factors among healthcare workers facing COVID-19 has exploded, biological variables have been mostly overlooked. METHODS: 467 healthcare workers from Quebec, Canada, answered an electronic survey covering various risk factors and mental health outcomes three months after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Of them, 372 (80%) provided a hair sample, providing a history of cortisol secretion for the three months p

Improving Behavioral Health Care for U.S. Army Personnel: Identifying Predictors of Treatment Outcomes.

This article identifies factors associated with changes in outcomes for soldiers who received Army behavioral health (BH) specialty care and provides recommendations to improve BH care and outcomes. RAND researchers identified three samples of soldiers who received Army BH care with diagnoses of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, or anxiety and whose symptoms were assessed during their care. Multivariate analyses included 141 patient and treatment variables to identify factors associated with symptom improvement. Analyses also examined patterns in how the symptoms changed over t

Mental health disorders and utilization of mental healthcare services in United Nations personnel.

BACKGROUND: United Nations (UN) personnel address a diverse range of political, social, and cultural crises throughout the world. METHODS: UN personnel (N = 17 363) from 11 UN entities completed online measures of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), major depressive disorder (MDD), posttrau

Assessment of Mental Health in Healthcare Personnel: A Review of DASS, MBI, and Zung Scales.

Background/Objectives: Healthcare professionals face high occupational stress, emotional burden, and demanding conditions that increase the risk of burnout, depression, and anxiety, with recent post-pandemic evidence indicating a high and rising global prevalence. Early identification of distress is therefore essential. This review compared three widely used instruments-the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales (DASS), the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), and the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS)-selected because they jointly cover depression, anxiety, stress, and burnout, unlike unidime

Military Exposures Predict Mental Health Symptoms in Explosives Personnel but Not Always as Expected.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the unique and combined associations of various military stress exposures with positive and negative mental health symptoms in active duty service members. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigated 87 male U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technicians (age M ± SE, range 33.7 ± 0.6, 22-47 years). Those who endorsed a positive traumatic brain injury diagnosis were excluded to eliminate the confounding effects on mental health symptoms. Using a survey platform on a computer tablet, EOD technicians self-reported combat exposure, deployment

[The management of cases of "conditional" work fitness due to spinal pathologies in health personnel].

On the basis of the trend in the literature, a process was identified, that uses the results of assessment of exposure to manual handling of patients, in order to practically manage, according to defined priorities, the transfer to other jobs of a large number of cases (about 8-10% of the workforce) that were potentially unfit due to back disorders. Aside from the procedures for clinical classification and grading of the severity of the disorders, which have been dealt with elsewhere, general indications are given for the association of cases of disease with assistance to hospitalised patients

Rubella screening and immunization of health care personnel: critical appraisal of a voluntary program.

At our health care center 1161 personnel and students were offered rubella antibody testing. Ninety-two percent were serologically screened or had been previously immunized or previously proven seropositive. Males were more likely to refuse serologic screening than females (p less than 0.01). Sixteen percent of the seroscreened individuals were found seronegative to rubella. Eighty-five percent of seronegative women less than or equal to 24 years old accepted immunization, as compared to 62% of older females and 55% of all males (p less than 0.01). The total cost of the program was over $11,00

[Need of mental health teams for patients hospitalized due to SARS-CoV-2 and front-line health personnel].

People vulnerable to mental health problems during the COVID-19 outbreak include hospitalized patients and frontline health professionals; mostly reported discomforts include: insomnia, anxiety and depression. Under strict infection measures, non-essential personnel such as clinical psychiatrists and psychologists are strongly discouraged from entering isolation wards; therefore, frontline health-care workers become the main personnel providing psychological interventions to patients in hospitals without knowing how to mitigate patient distress. Health personnel do not receive adequate care fo

Opportunities and barriers for genetic service delivery in Kenya from a health personnel perspective.

Genetic counselling and testing are essential health services for the management of heritable diseases. However, in low-and-middle income countries like Kenya, genetic counsellors are not yet a licenced profession, and there is limited availability of and access to genetic testing. This study aimed to uncover opportunities and barriers for genetic service delivery in the Kenyan healthcare system from the perspectives of those who provide genetic testing and/or genetic counselling. Participants included Kenyan health personnel who deliver genetic services. This was a qualitative study that coll

RESULTS: 29.1% of subjects were TST positive, 18.5% were QFT positive. In 23% of subjects no correlation between these tests was found, presumably linked to BCG-vaccinat

[Health personnel and population aspects of common experience with fever in sub-Saharan Africa].

In Sub-Saharan Africa fever is a common experience for the population and health care personnel. However widespread use of the term "malaria" by the population, paramedical personnel, physicians, etc. leads to the false impression of agreement among everyone despite the fact that it is applied to completely different concepts. Although the connection between malarial fever and mosquito bites is generally understood, it is often weak and unstable. Fever can be considered as a normal episode at some stages of pregnancy or childhood development. Fever may be attributed to mosquitoes but also to o
