BACKGROUND: Sexting, the sharing of sexually suggestive photos, may be a gateway behavior to early sexual activity and increase the likelihood of social ostracism.
METHODS: Youth Risk Behavior Survey (N = 6021) data from 2015 among Pennsylvania 9th-12th grade students were used to examine associations between consensual and nonconsensual sexting and substance use, mental health, neighborhood safety, and demographic variables.
RESULTS: Almost one-third (29%) of students reported consensual sexting, while 3% reported nonconsensual sexting. Female students were 49% less likely to report consens

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about how physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior, and various adolescent health risk behaviors are associated. The objective of this study was to examine relationships between PA and sedentary behavior patterns and an array of risk behaviors, including leading causes of adolescent morbidity/mortality.
METHODS: Nationally representative self-reported data were collected (National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health; wave I: 1994-1995; II: 1996; N = 11957). Previously developed and validated cluster analyses identified 7 homogeneous groups of adolescents shari

INTRODUCTION: The rapid spread of online health misinformation has emerged as a significant public health concern, particularly among young adults who rely heavily on digital sources for health information. Understanding how susceptibility to online health misinformation is associated with health risk behaviors and vaccine hesitancy is especially critical among nursing students, who will play a key role as future healthcare professionals. The aim of this study was to examine whether susceptibility to online health misinformation was associated with health behaviors and vaccine hesitancy among

Health compromising behaviors such as tobacco use, binge drinking, physical inactivity, sedentary behavior, obesity, and inadequate sleep are associated with increased cancer risk. Emerging adults (age 18-29) may be especially vulnerable to engaging in health compromising behaviors due to the transitional nature and novel independence during this developmental period. The current study uses data from the 2022 Health Information Trends Survey Data Linkage Project to understand relationships between aspects of the built environment (i.e., the Food Environment and the Exercise Environment) and ar

BACKGROUND: Due to their impact on premature mortality and long-term disabilities, a better understanding of health risk behavior (HRB) determinants among college students is crucial in order to build the most appropriate prevention tools. Although self-esteem appears to be a relevant candidate, a clear picture summarizing its multiple links with HRB is lacking to guide clinicians and researchers. This study aims to provide a systematic review of the associations between health risk behavior and self-esteem among college students.
METHODS: This search was performed in several databases on 02/

Compared with many parts of the world, there has been little research in Pacific Island nations into the effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on adult health. This is a significant gap for local evidence-based child protection. We describe findings from a survey of 400 men aged 18 to 70 years recruited from randomly sampled households in Honiara city, Solomon Islands. Most men reported multiple adversities during childhood (80.7% 3 or more; 46% 5 or more), such as exposure to community and domestic violence, bullying, physical maltreatment, and sexual abuse. Men with multiple ACEs h

This study examined interdependent trajectories of sexual risk, substance use, and conduct problems among 12- to 18-year-old African American youths who were followed annually as part of the Mobile Youth Study. We used growth mixture modeling to model the development of these three outcomes in the 1,406 participants who met the inclusion criteria. Results indicate that there were four distinct classes: normative, low risk (74.3% of sample); increasing high-risk takers (11.9%); adolescent-limited conduct problems and drug risk with high risky sex (8.0%); and early experimenters (5.8%) The highe

Disparities in the prevalence of obesity in youth place minority and low socioeconomic status youth at increased risk for the development of chronic disease, such as metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Contributing factors to the increases in obesity include a decline in positive health behaviors, such as making healthy dietary choices, engaging in physical activity, and limiting sedentary behaviors. Family and physical environmental contextual factors related to health behaviors are increasingly the focus of health behavior interventions in line with the bioecological model that encourage

BACKGROUND: To assess the behavioral risk factors and mental health needs of adolescents in juvenile detention centers (JDC).
METHOD: A total of 238 boys aged 12-17 years was surveyed who had been admitted to a detention center and compared them with boys from the community (n = 238) matched for sex and age. We assessed behavioral risk factors and mental health problems by using the Youth Risk Behavior Survey questionnaire (YRBS) and the Youth Self-Report questionnaire (YSR).
RESULTS: Young offenders had significantly higher YRBS scores than controls for drug use (odds ratio (OR) 5.16, 95% C

BACKGROUND: How adolescents spend their out-of-school time represents one of the most important factors for predicting positive youth development. Sport participation relates to many beneficial outcomes. However, current economic conditions threaten high school sport programs around the United States. This investigation examined relationships by year between sport participation and numerous health risk behaviors among high school students.
METHODS: Data were derived from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Youth Risk Behavior Surveys administered every 2 years from 1999 through 2

OBJECTIVE: The authors examined the clustering of health-risk behaviors among college students who reported date fight involvement.
PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: The authors administered a Web-based survey to a stratified random sample of 3,920 college students from 10 universities in North Carolina.
RESULTS: Among men, 5.6% reported date fight victimization, and 1% reported date fight perpetration. Victimization among men was associated with (1) first drink at age 15 years or younger, (2) a recent threat of violence by someone who had been drinking, (3) smoking, (4) amphetamine use, and (5) old

OBJECTIVES: We examined the sexual and injection drug use HIV and AIDS risk behaviors of female jail detainees.
METHODS: The sample (n = 948) was stratified by charge type (felony vs misdemeanor) and race/ethnicity (African American, non-Hispanic White, Hispanic, other).
RESULTS: Non-Hispanic White women, women arrested for less serious charges, women who had prior arrests, women arrested on drug charges, and women with severe mental disorders were at especially high risk for sexual and injection drug transmission of HIV and AIDS.
CONCLUSIONS: Many women at risk for HIV and AIDS--women who

Since 1991, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has administered the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) biennially to representative samples of high school students. YRBS results indicate that health-risk behaviors often developed during middle school years. To date, few state and local education agencies have administered the YRBS-Middle School. This study measured prevalence of health-risk behaviors among middle school students in a large, majority-minority school district (n = 1,783). Results indicated that young adolescents (ages 11-14) are engaging in multiple health-risk behavi

OBJECTIVE: The association of childhood sexual intercourse, excluding sexual abuse, with adolescent health and risk behaviors was examined using the urban component of a statewide study on adolescent health, risky behaviors, and resiliency factors.
METHODOLOGY: A specialized cohort design was used to derive a two-group sample. Index cases consisted of all adolescents who indicated that they had first intercourse at or before age 10 years, and controls were adolescents who either had not yet had intercourse or had done so at age 16 years or older. To avoid confounding with issues of sexual abu

With data from the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HHANES), we examined several health risk behaviors (cigarette smoking, alcohol use, dietary practices, and recency of health screening) of Mexican American, Cuban American, and Puerto Rican adults (ages 20-74). For each sample, a greater percentage of men than women smoked cigarettes and used alcohol. Heavy smoking (20+ cigarettes per day) was most prevalent for Cuban American males, and heavy drinking (1.00+ oz ethanol per day) was most prevalent for Mexican American and Puerto Rican men. Acculturation correlated positively

BACKGROUND: Understanding the associations between health behaviors and which subgroups are at risk of developing health risk behaviors is vital knowledge to develop effective public health interventions to reduce the high prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The objective of the study was to assess the association between physical activity, diet, tobacco use, and alcohol consumption and sociodemographic determinants (sex and education), and to examine clustering patterns of these health behaviors.
METHOD: Data was collected from an online self-reported questionnaire from the Norwe

BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) applications are positioned to provide information and support anywhere and anytime, though few focus on overdose-related harm reduction. We aimed to describe the use of an e-harm reduction smartphone application theoretically based on self-determination theory among people who inject drugs.
METHODS: We enrolled 60 clients from 3 syringe services programs in Wisconsin in a single-arm, pre-post pilot study between December 2022 and June 2023. Eligible participants used opioids and injected drugs within the past week. Participants received a smartphone, unlim

Incarceration is associated with significant health burdens. Prisoners suffer disproportionately from chronic diseases, mental disorders, and substance use disorders. While primary care in prisons is usually provided regularly and sometimes even faster than outside, care for more complex treatment needs is often limited to few facilities. Structural deficits include restricted freedom of physician choice, limited specialist access, separation from the regular health system, and gaps at the transitions from incarceration to release.Despite the principle of equivalence, prison healthcare often f
