Suicide amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is a major cause of premature mortality and a significant contributor to the health and life expectancy gap. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of thoughts of self-harm or suicide in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people attending an urban primary health care service and identify factors associated with these thoughts. Multilevel mixed-effects modified Poisson regression models were employed to analyse three years of data gathered during the annual Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health assessments. At their fir

Approximately 480 million individuals worldwide (~6% of the global population) are Indigenous peoples. Despite their diverse cultures and histories, the shared legacy of colonialism has profoundly shaped their health and socioeconomic status. This legacy is deeply intertwined with poverty, systemic racism and historical trauma, contributing to significant health disparities compared with non-Indigenous populations. Among the many chronic diseases disproportionately affecting Indigenous peoples, chronic kidney disease (CKD) stands out as a major public health concern. Indigenous peoples experie

Maternity care across the Circumpolar North continues to be shaped by colonial policies, centralized healthcare structures, and the ongoing evacuation of pregnant people from their communities for birth. While these challenges are well documented, less attention has been given to the strengths, innovations, and community-led approaches emerging across Arctic regions. Building on previous engagements of the Circumpolar Maternal and Child Health Working Group, a two-day workshop was convened in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, in March 2026. The workshop brought together Elders, Indig

The regionalization of healthcare must consider territorial diversity, which has significant implications for the implementation of public policies, particularly in ensuring differentiated attention to Indigenous territories. This article analyzed how Indigenous health is addressed within the Regional Intermanagers Commission (CIR) in a health region of Bahia, Brazil. This is a documentary analysis of 76 meeting minutes from the CIR, held between March 2013 and March 2023, available in the Bahian Observatory of Regionalization (OBR). The themes discussed in the minutes were analyzed using data

BACKGROUND: Within Manitoba and Saskatchewan, pre-existing health inequities amongst Indigenous groups were intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic. Service disruptions in the health and social service sector-combined with the effects of intersectional stigma-disproportionately impacted Indigenous peoples living with HIV (IPLH). IPLH experience structural violence and necropolitical exclusion through systemic forms of stigma situated within Canada's expansive colonial history. Utilizing the theoretical foundations of structural violence and necropolitics, this qualitative study examines how t

The burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among Indigenous children and adolescents is much greater than in non-Indigenous young people and appears to be rising, although data on epidemiology and complications are limited. Young Indigenous people living in remote areas appear to be at excess risk of T2DM. Most young Indigenous people with T2DM are asymptomatic at diagnosis and typically have a family history of T2DM, are overweight or obese and may have signs of hyperinsulinism such as acanthosis nigricans. Onset is usually during early adolescence. Barriers to addressing T2DM in young Ind

This proceedings paper synthesises contributions from a dedicated session on circumpolar maternal and child health held during the International Conference on Arctic Research Planning IV. The objective was to highlight the significance of maternal and child health within Arctic research and to identify community‑anchored, culturally grounded approaches to care across regions. The paper draws on presentations and facilitated dialogue involving researchers, Indigenous midwives, birthworkers, and practitioners, who shared findings related to knowledge dissemination, service delivery, health syste

The authors report on the results of a Survey Carried out in four areas in Center Cameroon. Health gets a major position within the concerns of the population to protect it, they prefer the classical and official system of health Care rather than the primary Health care System. Self-medication is also a preferred solution. In the rural milieu, they often pay a visit to a traditional practitioner. When they have to take a decision, geographical situation and money problem play both a major role.

Indigenous populations have different perceptions of mental health compared to Western medicine. Implicit bias and limited cultural awareness among healthcare professionals contribute to disparities in care, misdiagnosis, and disengagement. This article examines how historical trauma, spiritual perspectives, and systemic barriers hinder access to care for the Indigenous population. Implicit bias training can mitigate unconscious assumptions in nursing practice, influencing care delivery at the meso level and contributing to broader institutional change and health equity at the macro level. INTRODUCTION: Recognising and acting on the connection to Country as a determinant of Indigenous peoples' well-being is necessary to improve health inequities. Indigenous Australians experience a greater burden of chronic liver disease and poorer outcomes due to ongoing impacts of colonisation across determinants of health. This is exacerbated by a gradient in health outcomes based on remoteness, lack of specialist healthcare services and barriers to access. Our research aims to explore better ways to provide chronic liver disease screening and surveillance for very remote Indigenous Australia

BACKGROUND: In Australia, around 3.6 million people suffer from hearing loss, more than 1.3 million with preventable hearing conditions. Ear diseases are prevalent in Indigenous populations, particularly children and are associated with poor educational outcomes and subsequent high rates of unemployment and incarceration. In Australia, rural and remote communities have rates of middle ear perforations five times the rate that the World Health Organisation regards to be a significant public health problem.Barriers to accessing ear health services have been identified including gaps in testing d

For over 40 years, First Nations communities in Australia have called for community-controlled birthing and maternal-infant health programs that restore First Nations-led, community-controlled birthing systems grounded in cultural authority and sovereignty. 'Birthing on Country' services have demonstrated improved First Nations maternal-infant health outcomes, more babies kept out of the child protection system, and reduced health system costs. Restoration and expansion of Birthing on Country services across regions has been inconsistent, and has lacked support for national implementation. In

National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer centers in the United States have played a historic part in America's health care history and are well poised to serve as collaborative partners in ensuring the future health of Indigenous Peoples. Beyond race, Indigenous Peoples are political classifications with Native Nation citizenship and land-bases who negotiate at the federal level as sovereigns. As such, Native Nations, as separate governments of the USA, trade, negotiate, and operate healthcare independently. Optimally, cancer centers with Indigenous-specific initiatives can build path

Current models of dementia care often perpetuate the legacies of colonization, which highlights the need for a culturally congruent approach. This research describes the necessary components to co-develop a freely available Indigenous-centered dementia model of care in partnership with Indigenous individuals living with dementia, their families, and communities. To prioritize ethical and decolonial research approaches, sequential focus groups were used alongside Keeoukaywin (The Visiting Way)-an Indigenous methodology deeply rooted in Métis and Cree ways of knowing-guided by a group of advisor
