This commentary examines the impact of poverty on health and healthcare access for Indigenous, Black, racialized and migrant Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and other sexual and gender minority (2S/LGBTQ+) individuals. It highlights the necessity of inclusive policies and strategies to tackle their unique challenges, including high poverty rates, unemployment, homelessness and intersecting oppressions in the housing and healthcare sectors. Emphasizing the need for comprehensive research to guide policy and practice, this paper calls for structural changes in healthcare a

Inclusive design has evolved as a design approach and a research topic in the last three decades. Despite its evolution, there are new frontiers to consider in the context of two phenomena: global ageing populations and the digital transition of services, particularly healthcare. This state-of-science paper presents challenges to be considered when taking an intersectional perspective and its impact on the development of digital health intervention (DHI). We present evidence highlighting how health inequalities can impact digital skills, affecting the use of DHI and potentially exacerbating ex

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Significant inequities persist in hypertension detection and control, with minoritized populations disproportionately experiencing organ damage and premature death due to uncontrolled hypertension. Remote blood pressure monitoring combined with telehealth visits (RBPM) is proving to be an effective strategy for controlling hypertension. Yet there are challenges related to technology adoption, patient engagement and social determinants of health (SDoH), contributing to disparities in patient outcomes. This review summarizes the evidence to date for RBPM, focusing on the poten

This Special Issue (SI) of Preventive Medicine is the 12th in an annual series on behavior change, health, and health disparities. The theme of this 2025 issue is Intersections of Tobacco Use with Other Addictions, Chronic Disease, and Health Disparities. Considerable attention is given to cigarette smoking as it remains the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., causing approximately 450,000 deaths annually in the U.S. and more than 7 million globally. This SI includes thirteen peer-reviewed articles that were invited from speakers at the 2024 annual conference of the Vermont Center

This study evaluates changes in cross-national disparities in the burden of severe periodontitis between 1990 and 2021. All data on severe periodontitis used in this study were derived from the 2021 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study. Annual years lived with disability (YLDs) and their estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) were calculated and stratified by year, age, geographical region, and socio-demographic index (SDI) at global, regional, and national levels. Decomposition analysis assessed the contributions of demographic and epidemiological factors to the evolving burden of severe

Sport-related concussion (SRC) is a prevalent injury. Significant disparities in SRC outcomes exist across racial and ethnic groups. These disparities may be attributed to the unequal distribution of political power (or influence) and resource allocation in various communities, shaping individuals' social determinants of health (SDOH). However, the influence of SDOH on SRC outcomes remains understudied. In this clinical commentary, we use the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Framework and describe how its application can help address gaps in our understandi

Cancer epidemiology, biomarkers & prevention : a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research, cosponsored by the American Society of Preventive Oncology2016eng
BACKGROUND: Americans remain under-informed about cancer and other health disparities and the social determinants of health (SDH). The news media may be contributing to this knowledge deficit, whether by discussing these issues narrowly or ignoring them altogether. Because local media are particularly important in influencing public opinion and support for public policies, this study examines the prevalence and framing of disparities/SDH in local mainstream and ethnic print news.
METHODS: We conducted a multi-method content analysis of local mainstream (English language) and ethnic (Spanish l

OBJECTIVE: Area-based measures of socioeconomic status (SES) are increasingly used to study health disparities among people living with HIV (PLWH), with wide variation in how they are defined and applied across studies and settings. This study synthesises the types of area-based measures of SES used in Canada and the USA, the domains captured and their associations with health outcomes among PLWH.
METHODS: A scoping review of studies published in English between 2012 and 2025 was conducted using PubMed and Web of Science. The search combined 'HIV' with terms related to area-based SES measures

Racial and ethnic minoritized groups and socioeconomically disadvantaged communities experience longstanding health-related disparities in the United States and were disproportionately affected throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. How departments of public health can explicitly address these disparities and their underlying determinants remains less understood. To inform future public health responses, this paper details how California strategically placed health equity at the core of its COVID-19 reopening and response policy, known as the Blueprint for a Safer Economy. In effect from August 202

BACKGROUND: Health disparities are prevalent across respiratory diseases. Social determinants of health are closely associated with health disparities and account for between 30% and 55% of all health outcomes. In people with interstitial lung disease (ILD), disparities have the potential to significantly impact access to care and health outcomes along many stages of the disease journey.
AIM: This review aimed to provide an overview of health disparities in ILD, focusing on the determinants of health and access to care from diagnosis to end of life and to report on some approaches being propo

The United States is facing a maternal health crisis with increasing rates of severe maternal morbidity and mortality. To improve maternal health and promote health equity, the authors developed a novel 2-generation model of postpartum and pediatric care. This article describes the Two-Generation Clinic (Two-Gen) and model of care. The model combines a dyadic strategy for simultaneous maternal and pediatric care with the collaborative care model in which seamless primary and behavioral health care are delivered to address the physical health, behavioral health, and social service needs of fami

Health professionals commonly reference race and ethnicity to inform health care and administrative decisions. However, health researchers (and, arguably, society at large) misapply race and ethnicity when assuming an inherent relationship of these concepts with biological and health outcomes of interest. Misapplication of race potentially results from socially embedded identification predicated upon race essentialism, the belief that people within a racial group share "inherent" biological traits that define them as distinct from other racial groups. This false belief is often associated with

Disrupted puberty in males may result from self-limiting constitutional delay of growth and puberty (CDGP) or abiding hypogonadism (ie, congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, CHH). This article provides an overview of normal puberty, CDGP, and CHH and synthesizes current evidence on health and wellbeing outcomes. Particular attention is given to the drivers of disparities in outcomes and discussion of future directions to advance the care of males with disrupted puberty.

People with a learning disability can experience significant problems in accessing healthcare and this may be partly reflected in worse health outcomes compared with the general population, including a shorter life expectancy. The Equality Act (2010) requires that organisations and individuals make changes to the way services are provided for all disabled people to mitigate, as far as possible, any disadvantage they may face in accessing these services. These changes are termed 'reasonable adjustments'. This article describes the reasonable adjustments that can be made to facilitate the admiss

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a significant public health challenge in Florida despite advancements in prevention and treatment. This review analyses the current epidemiology, disease burden and management strategies for hepatitis B in Florida as of 2025, drawing on state surveillance data and recent public health reports. Florida continues to experience higher rates of both acute and chronic hepatitis B compared to national averages, with pronounced racial, ethnic and geographic disparities. Rural areas face disproportionately high rates of acute infections, while chronic infectio

Self-reported food allergies (FAs) affect approximately 8% of the US pediatric and approximately 10% of the adult population, which reflects potentially disproportionate increases among ethnically and racially minoritized groups. Multiple gaps and unmet needs exist regarding FA disparities. There is reported evidence of disparities in FA outcomes, and the FA burden may also be disproportionate in low-income families. Low family income has been associated with higher emergency care spending and insecure access to allergen-free food. Pharmacoinequity arises in part as a result of structural raci

Among all of the industrialized countries, the United States has the highest infant mortality rate. Racial and ethnic disparities continue to plague the United States with a disproportionally high rate of infant death. Furthermore, racial disparities among infant and neonatal mortality rates remain a chronic health problem in the United States. These risks are based on the geographical variations in mortality and disparities among differences in maternal risk characteristics, low birth weights, and lack of access to health care.
