[Adjustment of hearing aids using a computer].

There was developed the programme for the fitting of hearing-aids for minicomputer SHARP PC 1500. According to the audiometric investigation the programme enables to choose the SPPL (Saturation Sound Pressure Level), gain, compression and frequency range. The programme was proved in the fitting of hearing-aids to thirty subjects, mostly with sensorineural hearing impairment. The use of the computer is considered as the simplifying of this work to the audiological personal.

Nontraditional 'aids' to hearing: assistive listening devices.

Unresolved hearing loss and its associated sense of isolation burden the hearing-impaired elderly. The plight of both listeners and talkers justifies every effort to encourage and enhance communication. Assistive listening devices can benefit many family practice patients. The following service welcomes questions or comments about implementing these devices: Audiology-Speech Pathology Service, VA Medical Center, 700 South 19th Street, Birmingham, AL 35203; (205)933-8101, ext. 6701 and 6702. [Communicative performance using hearing aids (author's transl)].

By means of a questionnaire the utilization of hearing aids has been investigated in 550 patients who had received their aids in the way being typical for the Federal Republic of Germany, i.e. after being prescribed by the ENT-specialist the hearing aid is fitted by the hearing aid acoustician. Additionally the study aimed to analyze relevant factors influencing the use of hearing aids. 45% of the patients used their aids always, 52% regularly (on special occasions) and 3,1% never. The most common complaints of patients refusing their hearing aid were disturbing noise and unsatisfactory unders

Attitudes to hearing difficulty and hearing aids and the outcome of audiological rehabilitation.

First time hearing aid candidates (N = 135) in a NHS setting were administered the Hearing Attitudes in Rehabilitation Questionnaire (HARQ) designed to assess attitudes to acquired hearing loss and hearing aids and 92% of them were followed up 3-9 months after fitting. Attitude scores, age, sex and sensory thresholds were related to six self-report outcome measures by use of logistic regression. The major findings were that patients who were least distressed by their hearing difficulties and reported not wanting or needing a hearing aid used their aids least frequently and evaluated them less

Hearing loss and hearing aids: the Singapore School for the Deaf experience.

This is a retrospective study of the population of 180 students in the Singapore School for the Deaf between September 1989 to June 1990. It was found that the average age at which the hearing loss was diagnosed was four years. Rubella accounted for 13 cases (7.2%), hereditary factors for nine cases (5.0%), ototoxicity for two cases (1.1%), trauma for two cases (1.1%) and the other 154 cases (85.6%) were of unknown causes. The average hearing loss at 500 Hz, 1 and 2 kHz is 98 dBHL. The students use either the body-worn type or the behind-the-ear type of hearing aids for amplification. There wa

The Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly as a measure of hearing aid benefit.

Hearing impairment in older adults is associated with psychological and social difficulties. The goal of hearing aid fitting is to reduce the perceived handicap resulting from the hearing loss. Measures of self-perceived handicap are being increasingly incorporated into the clinicians armamentarium as an objective measure of the outcome of intervention. Eighteen elderly hearing-impaired males and their spouses responded to the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly (HHIE) prior to and following 1 year of hearing aid provision. Our findings revealed a significant reduction in the perceived

Long-Term Effects of Hearing Aids on Hearing Ability in Patients with Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

BACKGROUND: A frequent concern surrounding amplification with hearing aids for patients with sensorineural hearing loss is whether these devices negatively affect hearing ability. To date, there have been few studies examining the long-term effects of amplification on audiometric outcomes in adults. PURPOSE: In the present study, we examined how hearing aids affect standard audiometric outcomes over long-term periods of follow-up. RESEARCH DESIGN: We retrospectively collected audiometric data in adults with sensorineural hearing loss, constructing a model of long-term outcomes. STUDY SAMPLE

In situ Hearing Tests for the Purpose of a Self-Fit Hearing Aid.

This study investigated the potential and limitations of a self-fit hearing aid. This can be used in the "developing" world or in countries with large distances between the hearing-impaired subjects and the professional. It contains an on-board tone generator for in situ user-controlled, automated audiometry, and other tests for hearing aid fitting. Twenty subjects with mild hearing losses were involved. In situ audiometry showed a test-retest reliability (SD <3.7 dB) that compared well with the precision of diagnostic audiometry using headphones. There was good correspondence (SD <5.2 dB) wit

Results of the bone-anchored hearing aid in unilateral hearing loss.

OBJECTIVES: The advantages of binaural hearing are well established and universally accepted. However, a tendency remains to withhold the benefits of binaural hearing to adults and children with one normal ear. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the benefit of the bone-anchored hearing aid (BAHA) in a group of patients with unilateral conductive or mixed hearing loss. STUDY DESIGN: This is a prospective study of nine patients (five males and four female patients) with conductive or mixed hearing loss who met the criteria for BAHA except for having normal hearing in the other ear. In-the-ear hearing aids. The use and benefit in the elderly hearing-impaired.

Preliminary clinical experiences with in-the-ear hearing aids (ITE-HAs) have been promising, and a beneficial effect has been demonstrated in younger hearing-impaired subjects. However, the subjects applying for audiological examination and rehabilitation are predominantly elderly people (i.e. greater than or equal to 70 years). The present questionnaire examination was performed in order to evaluate the use and benefit of ITE-HAs also in the elderly hearing-impaired, and compare with the effect in younger subjects. An extensive questionnaire was sent 6 months after hearing aid fitting to all

Auditory handicap of hearing impairment and the limited benefit of hearing aids.

The aim of this article is to promote a better understanding of hearing impairment as a communicative handicap, primarily in noisy environments, and to explain by means of a quantitative model the essentially limited applicability of hearing aids. After data on the prevalence of hearing impairment and of auditory handicap have been reviewed, it is explained that every hearing loss for speech can be interpreted as the sum of a loss class A (attenuation), characterized by a reduction of the levels of both speech signal and noise, and a loss D (distortion), comparable with a decrease in speech-to

Historical background of bone conduction hearing devices and bone conduction hearing aids.

During the last 20 years, bone-anchored hearing aids (Baha(®)) became a familiar solution in the treatment of some types of hearing loss. The aim of this chapter is to present the different historical steps which have permitted the production of this new bone conduction hearing device. The recognition of bone conduction hearing is old and was known at least in Antiquity. During the Renaissance, Girolamo Cardano demonstrated a method by which sound may be transmitted to the ear by means of a rod or the shaft of a spear held between one's teeth: this was the beginning of teeth stimulators to imp

Noise schemas aid hearing in noise.

Human hearing is robust to noise, but the basis of this robustness is poorly understood. Several lines of evidence are consistent with the idea that the auditory system adapts to sound components that are stable over time, potentially achieving noise robustness by suppressing noise-like signals. Yet background noise often provides behaviorally relevant information about the environment and thus seems unlikely to be completely discarded by the auditory system. Motivated by this observation, we explored whether noise robustness might instead be mediated by internal models of noise structure that

[Renewal of a hearing aid is a medical task].

A 67 year-old man was known to have a right-sided hearing loss with a normal discrimination score (DS) and was treated with a hearing aid (HA) in the right ear. An MRI-scan was normal. In 2006 and 2010 the HA was renewed at a private hearing aid clinic. No DS was performed. At the audiology clinic we found a masked DS of 0% and progression of the hearing loss. An MRI-scan revealed a vestibular schwannoma (VS) on the right side. The patient was fitted with an HA in the left ear and MRI-scans every six months. A masked DS could have revealed the VS and correct treatment thus could have been init
