Prevention of conductive hearing loss in cleft palate patients.

One of the most common complications of cleft palate patients is the high frequency of otitis media episodes that they present, due to eustachian tube dysfunction. This is not only a problem for the otolaryngologist who must handle these patients, but just as well for the phoniatrician, who must evaluate and rehabilitate the speech and language disorders which can be enhanced by conductive hearing loss. Thus, we designed an isometric exercise to achieve an artificial drainage of the secretions produced in the middle ear, by means of opening the lumen of the eustachian tube, which, when done fr

Continuing management of conductive hearing loss during language development.

Recently greater attention has been focussed on the possibility that mild fluctuating or intermittent hearing loss, as seen in one of early childhood's most common illnesses, otitis media, may have long-lasting and sometimes devastating effects on language development and learning. Conductive hearing loss in serous otitis media most affects frequencies below 2000 Hz, and the duration of hearing loss after an acute episode of otitis media may last 6-24 months in up to 30% of affected children. The first principle of management of this problem and congenital conductive hearing loss is detection

Effect of conductive hearing loss and middle ear surgery on binaural hearing.

This study investigated whether conductive hearing loss reduces normal binaural hearing advantages and whether binaural hearing advantages are normal in patients who have had hearing thresholds improved by middle ear surgery. Binaural hearing was assessed at a test frequency of 500 Hz using the masking level difference and interaural time discrimination thresholds. Results indicated that binaural hearing is often poor in conductive lesion patients and that the reduction in binaural hearing is not always consistent with a simple attenuation of the acoustic signal. Poor binaural hearing sometime

Conductive hearing loss and normal CT: a clinical perspective.

PURPOSE: This article presents clinical scenarios in which patients with conductive hearing loss may not have an explanatory finding on temporal bone CT. METHODS: A literature review regarding patients with conductive hearing loss and no attributable imaging findings was performed. Illustrative examples correlating audiological exams and photon counting detector CT scans are provided. Common explanations of conductive hearing loss, e.g.: otosclerosis, are reviewed. CONCLUSION: Patients with conductive hearing loss are assumed to have attributable imaging findings on temporal bone CT. While t

Acute streptococcal meningitis presenting as bilateral conductive hearing loss.

Bacterial meningitis is a relatively uncommon condition encountered in the emergency department and the constellation of symptoms varies. Hearing loss has been well documented in the literature as a complication of the disease process, but not as the presenting complaint. We describe a case of a 59-year-old female who presented to the emergency department with sudden onset bilateral hearing loss who was found to have S. pneumonia meningitis bacterial meningitis. Even with advances in therapy, bacterial meningitis still carries a significant mortality rate. Early diagnosis and treatment is crit

Iatrogenic carotid artery pseudoaneurysm presenting with conductive hearing loss.

Pseudoaneurysms of the intracranial internal carotid artery may occur in the setting of carotid artery dehiscence, due to trauma, invasive tumors, or as a complication of surgery. The rare surgical complication of carotid artery laceration in the petrous segment may occur during myringotomy procedures, middle ear operations, or petrous temporal bone surgery. We report a 28-year-old female patient, a case of internal carotid artery pseudoaneurysm as a complication of middle ear surgery. On her follow-up, computed tomography of the temporal bone demonstrated a dehiscent carotid artery, and a pse

TAP deficiency syndrome: chronic rhinosinusitis and conductive hearing loss.

Nose-ear-throat manifestations of immunodeficiency disorders represent a diagnostic challenge for clinicians as these diseases often constitute the initial sign for connective disorders or autoimmune disease. The history of chronic rhinosinusitis and conductive hearing loss is often non specific. Therefore attention to an HLA class I deficiency must be considered if the disease has not been diagnosed on routine examination. One of the syndromes is due to a defective TAP complex, the peptide transporter complex associated with antigen presentation. Herein, we report two sisters with TAP-deficie

Effects of rapid maxillary expansion on conductive hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: To test the null hypothesis that rapid maxillary expansion (RME) with a rigid bonded appliance has no effect on conductive hearing loss (CHL) in growing children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen growing subjects (mean age 13.43 +/- 0.86 years) who had narrow maxillary arches and CHL participated in this study. Three pure-tone audiometric and tympanometric records were taken from each subject. The first records were taken before RME (T1), the second after maxillary expansion (T2) (mean = 0.83 months), and the third after retention (mean = 6 months) and fixed appliance treatment (appr

Effects of semirapid maxillary expansion on conductive hearing loss.

INTRODUCTION: Conductive hearing loss is affected by physical changes imposed on the mechanical system of the outer or middle ear. Maxillary expansion can affect conductive hearing loss, and the changes have been investigated with pure-tone audiograms. Semirapid and slow methods of maxillary expansion have some advantages over rapid maxillary expansion, but the effects on conductive hearing loss have not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to investigate long-term effects of semirapid maxillary expansion (SRME) with an acrylic bonded appliance on conductive hearing loss by using a

Cochlear conductive hearing loss in patients with Meniere's disease.

OBJECTIVES: Physiological studies with experimental models of endolymphatic hydrops in Meniere's disease demonstrate some pressure changes at the level of round and oval window. Interestingly, conductive type hearing loss was observed in some patients during Meniere episodes. A close auditory follow-up of these patients may provide a better understanding of hydrodynamic changes of the hydrops and micromechanics of the inner ear. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eighty-four patients (mean age 34.3 years; range 17 to 77 years) with Meniere's disease were enrolled in the study. Duration of Meniere symptoms

Conductive hearing loss in individuals with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a very rare genetic disorder that is characterized by progressive heterotopic ossification of soft tissues and congenital malformation of the great toes. Although previous case studies have reported hearing loss in individuals with FOP, there have been no large-scale studies regarding the nature or cause of the hearing loss. Here, we report the findings of a two-part study. In Part I, we report the findings of a postal survey regarding hearing loss that was sent to 102 individuals with FOP. In Part II, we report the findings of on-site hearing eva

Binaural processing after corrected congenital unilateral conductive hearing loss.

Binaural processing was measured in a series of tests in patients before and after surgery to correct congenital unilateral conductive hearing losses. Data are presented from 19 patients between the ages of 6 and 33 years that had an abnormal external and/or middle ear on one side but normal hearing in the other ear. Surgery improved thresholds an average of 36 dB HL (from 56 to 20 dB HL). Patients were tested pre- and postoperatively for interaural temporal difference limens, alternate and simultaneous loudness balances, sound localization, binaural detection thresholds, and speech perception

Auditory neuronal sizes after a unilateral conductive hearing loss.

The left external auditory meatus was removed in 4-day-old CBA/J mice; after killing at 45 days, serial sections of the cochleae and brain stem were prepared. From these, the cross-sectional areas of spiral ganglion neurons and of 14 auditory brain stem neuronal types were measured, using a total of 210 neurons of each of the 15 types from both the right and left sides. Nine neuronal types were significantly smaller (P less than 0.01) on the left side: spiral ganglion neurons; globular, small spherical, large spherical, octopus, multipolar, and granule cells of the ventral cochlear nucleus; Pu
