[Berger's disease and acquired sensorineural hearing loss].

A relation between kidney and inner ear disease, specifically neurosensorial hearing loss, has been established. Likewise, the role of tonsillitis in certain glomerulonephritides is well known. A case of post-streptococcal mesangial glomerulonephritis with IgA deposit (Berger's disease) and neurosensorial hearing loss is reported. The absence of any relevant family or personal history suggests an immunological origin for both disorders.

[Sensorineural hearing loss in chronic otitis media].

In individuals with chronic otitis media-(COM), mixed hearing impairments are common, but it is unclear whether the raised bone conduction thresholds are a reflection of the pathologic process affecting the middle ear resulting in conductive defect. Charts of 65 patients with unilateral chronic otitis media were reviewed. These were three groups: 1) simple COM 2) COM with granulation, 3) COM with cholesteatoma. In them, the amount of sensorineural hearing loss in the third group was 20.3 dB, which was greater than the other two groups for pure-tone average. The amount of air conduction hearing

Sensorineural hearing loss associated with Takayasu's disease.

This is a case report of sensorineural hearing loss associated with Takayasu's disease. Also known as "pulseless disease" and "aortic arch syndrome," Takayasu's disease involves narrowing of the aortic arch and its branches. Although the etiology is unknown, it is suspected to be an autoimmune disorder. In the case presented, steroid therapy resulted in an improvement of hearing. On one relapse the hearing loss worsened before the sedimentation rate increased. We speculate that the hearing loss is due to an autoimmune process or an ischemia involving the inner ear. We further speculate that he

Congenital cytomegalovirus infection and sensorineural hearing loss.

In a prospective study still in progress, infants with congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection were followed with audiological, ophthalmological, neurological, and psychological tests; 10,328 infants were investigated within a 5-year period (1977-1982) by virus isolation in urine within the first week of life. Fifty (0.5%) had a congenital CMV infection. In this group four children turned out to have total deafness and a fifth possibly a mild hearing disorder. In one case the deafness was associated with severe mental retardation and spastic tetraplegia. The mother of the child had a primar

Masking, temporal integration, and sensorineural hearing loss.

This study was undertaken basically to examine the effect of white noise masking on temporal integration and how the frequency dependence of temporal integration is related to hearing loss. The threshold differences between 500-msec and 20-msec tones at .5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz were found for 147 ears of 86 subjects with normal hearing and with various amounts of cochlear hearing loss. Thresholds were measured in three levels of background white noise--30, 60, and 90 dB SPL. The principal finding was that temporal integration is frequency dependent and this dependence is not an epiphenomenon of the

Shooting, sensorineural hearing loss, and workers' compensation.

Pure-tone audiograms of 29,953 workers with histories of shooting and occupational noise exposure were analyzed. The analysis was based on the asymmetry of hearing loss. Results of this study show that shooting is related to asymmetrical hearing loss, suggesting that shooting may cause an additional amount of hearing loss other than that due to occupational noise exposure. Asymmetry was found to increase as the length of shooting history increased and was significant only at 2 kHz and above and most prominent at 4 kHz. Results also indicated that as long as compensable frequencies remain below

Heparin therapy for sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

Twenty-three patients with sudden unilateral sensorineural hearing loss were treated with a course of intravenous heparin sodium within one week of the onset of the hearing loss. Complete or good recovery developed in a total of 69.6% of these patients, but this is very similar to previously reported criteria of 66% spontaneous recovery. There was one complication in the series, ie. priapism.

Natural history of sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

This is a prospective in-depth study of patients with sudden idiopathic sensorineural hearing loss. We found that 65% recover completely to functional hearing levels spontaneously and independent of any type of medical treatment. The majority do so within 14 days and many within the first few days. Prognosis can be predicted according to the slope of the initial audiogram (low-frequency losses do better than high-frequency losses), hearing at 8 kHz, erythrocyte sedimentation rates, in some select instances spatial disorientation symptoms, and speech discrimination scores. There was a very poor

Sensorineural hearing loss in chronic ear surgery.

The author's series of 3000 consecutive operations of tympanoplasty from 1960 to 1975 were reviewed in regard to the occurrence of sensorineural hearing loss as a consequence of the surgical procedure. Worsening of bone conduction thresholds by 10 dB through the frequencies 500 to 4000 cps, or a 10% reduction in speech discrimination scores were considered significant. Whereas in transcanal tympanoplasty the incidence of cochlear damage was greater in ears when initially the ossiculare chain was incomplete, by contrast in combined approach tympanoplasty the risk was greater when the chain was

Acoustic reflex relaxation in sensorineural hearing loss.

This study examined stapedial reflex recordings of pulsed pure tones (500, 1,000, 2,000, and 4,000 Hz) in 26 subjects with normal hearing and 18 with sensorineural impairment. The stapedial reflex tracings clearly differentiated the two groups of subjects. Like many of our special audiometric procedures, this test was least effective in those with mild hearing loss. The test also appeared to be useful in identifying high-frequency hearing losses. Although this reflex measurement appears to have potential as a clinical tool, additional field study appears necessary.

Genetic diagnosis of childhood sensorineural hearing loss.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital/early-onset sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is one of the most common hereditary disorders in our environment. There is increasing awareness of the importance of an etiologic diagnosis, and genetic testing with next-generation sequencing (NGS) has the highest diagnostic yield. Our study shows the genetic results obtained in a cohort of patients with bilateral congenital/early-onset SNHL. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 105 children with bilateral SNHL that received genetic testing between 2019 and 2022. Genetic tests were performed with whole exome sequencing, an

Underestimated Subsequent Sensorineural Hearing Loss after Septicemia.

Background and Objectives: Hearing loss after septicemia has been found in mice; the long-term risk increased 50-fold in young adults in a previous study. Hearing loss after septicemia has not received much attention. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between septicemia and subsequent hearing loss. Materials and Methods: Inpatient data were obtained from the Taiwan Insurance Database. We defined patients with sensorineural hearing loss and excluded patients under 18 years of age. Patients without hearing loss were selected as controls at a frequency of 1:5. The date of admis

Non-Syndromic Sensorineural Hearing Loss in Children.

Pediatric hearing loss is common with significant consequences in terms of language, communication, social and emotional development, and academic advancement. Radiological imaging provides useful information regarding hearing loss etiology, prognosis, therapeutic options, and potential surgical pitfalls. This review provides an overview of temporal bone imaging protocols, an outline of the classification of inner ear anomalies associated with sensorineural hearing loss and illustrates some of the more frequently encountered and/or important causes of non-syndromic hearing loss.

Intratympanic corticosteroids for sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) is common, and defined as a sudden decrease in sensorineural hearing sensitivity of unknown aetiology. Systemic corticosteroids are widely used, however their value remains unclear. Intratympanic injections of corticosteroids have become increasingly common in the treatment of ISSNHL. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of intratympanic corticosteroids in people with ISSNHL. SEARCH METHODS: The Cochrane ENT Information Specialist searched the Cochrane ENT Trials Register; CENTRAL (2021, Issue 9); PubMed; Ovid Embase; CINAHL; Web

Biologics for Immune-Mediated Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

Immune-mediated hearing losses include autoimmune inner ear disease, sudden sensorineural hearing loss, and Meniere's disease. Standard therapy for an acute decline in hearing is timely use of corticosteroids. Although 60% to 70% of patients are initially corticosteroid-responsive, that responsiveness is lost over time. In corticosteroid-resistant patients, increased expression of interleukin (IL)-1 is observed, and these patients may benefit from IL-1 inhibition. Autoinflammatory diseases are characterized by dysregulation of the innate immune response, clinically include sensorineural hearin

Bilateral sensorineural hearing loss induced by regorafenib.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Regorafenib is a novel multi-targeted tyrosine kinase inhibitor approved for use in refractory metastatic colorectal cancer, advanced gastrointestinal stromal tumours and hepatocellular carcinoma. We report a case of bilateral sensorineural hearing loss caused by regorafenib. CASE SUMMARY: A 48-year-old woman was diagnosed with colon cancer that had metastasized to the liver, ureter and left ovary. She was initially treated with oral regorafenib at the lowest recommended dosage of 80 mg/d for 2 weeks, at which point the dose was increased to 120 mg/d. On the secon

Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss: Primary Care Update.

The primary care physician's role in recognizing sudden sensorineural hearing (SSNHL) loss and delivering initial treatment is critical in the management of the syndrome. This role involves recognizing its clinical symptoms, distinguishing it from conductive hearing loss with the Weber tuning fork or the Rauch hum test, and urgent administration of high dose oral corticosteroids. Diagnosis and treatment should not be delayed for audiometric testing or referral to otolaryngology. This paper provides an update on the initial evaluation and treatment of this syndrome based on the literature and c
