Analysis of the Results of Cytomegalovirus Testing Combined with Genetic Testing in Children with Congenital Hearing Loss.

To improve the etiological diagnosis of congenital hearing loss by combining whole-exome sequencing (WES) with cytomegalovirus (CMV) testing and to explore the potential benefits of adding CMV screening to newborn hearing screening, 80 children under 2 years of age with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss were recruited. Peripheral venous blood was extracted from the children for WES analysis. Saliva after mouthwash and the first urine in the morning were collected and used as samples to quantify CMV DNA copy number in urine and saliva by qPCR; among the 80 children with congenital deafness,

Testing Feasibility of a Self-Administered Hearing Test for Patients With Progressive Apraxia of Speech and Aphasia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hearing loss is relatively common in older individuals, and individuals with frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) are no exception; this can exacerbate communication difficulties stemming from speech-language impairments. The co-occurrence of these symptoms can contribute to increased frustration and isolation for patients and their communication partners. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of self-administered hearing testing. Ultimately, this could be administered remotely, which would increase access to assessment and inform management

Multi-dimensional evaluation of user-operated audible contrast sensitivity tests towards efficient hearing healthcare services.

The user-operated audiometry (UAud) project aims at introducing an automated system for user-operated audiometric testing into everyday clinical practice. Here, we focus on the Audible Contrast Threshold (ACT) test, which has been proposed as a language-independent alternative to aided speech-in-noise tests. Five distinct user-operated ACT (U-ACT) test candidates were evaluated in terms of performance, reliability, and usability against two established test benchmarks. The study involved 28 participants with diverse hearing and cognitive abilities. The results demonstrated that the primary fac

Auditory processing in normally hearing individuals with and without tinnitus: assessment with four psychoacoustic tests.

PURPOSE: In most cases, tinnitus co-exists with hearing loss, suggesting that poorer speech understanding is simply due to a lack of acoustic information reaching the central nervous system (CNS). However, it also happens that patients with tinnitus who have normal hearing also report problems with speech understanding, and it is possible to suppose that tinnitus is to blame for difficulties in perceptual processing of auditory information. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the auditory processing abilities of normally hearing subjects with and without tinnitus. METHODS: The study grou

Hearing screenings for preschool children: A comparison between whispered voice and pure tone audiogram tests.

INTRODUCTION: This prospective study compares the efficiency of two hearing screening tests performed on preschool children. These tests are known as whispered voice test and pure tone audiometry. METHODS: Standard hearing screenings were performed on five-year old children using a whispered voice test followed by ENT examination with pure tone audiometry. RESULTS: A total of 827 children were included in the study. Hearing loss (>25 dB) was observed in 5.8% of the evaluated children (n = 48), being bilateral in only 1.6% (n = 13) of these cases. Slight hearing impairment (hearing loss of 16

Clinical value of vestibular-evoked myogenic potential tests in patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate the clinical value of two kinds of vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials in patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). METHODS: A total of 82 patients were divided into two groups: vertigo group and non-vertigo group. All patients underwent examinations for pure tone hearing thresholds, middle ear analysis, the videonystagmography, caloric tests, and vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials elicited from the sternocleidomastoid and extraocular muscle. In addition, 30 healthy subjects were selected as the control group. RESULTS: For the 30

Diotic and Antiphasic Digits-in-noise Testing as a Hearing Screening and Triage Tool to Classify Type of Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVES: The digits-in-noise test (DIN) is a popular self-test measure that has traditionally been used to screen for hearing loss by providing either a pass or refer result. Standard approaches either tested each ear monaurally or used a binaural diotic version where identical digits and noise were presented simultaneously to both ears. Recently, a dichotic, antiphasic version was developed, increasing sensitivity of the DIN to unilateral or asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and conductive hearing loss (CHL). The purpose of this study was to determine predictors and normative ra

Improving Access to Adult Hearing Care: A Retrospective Review of an Awareness Campaign and Community Hearing Test Service.

INTRODUCTION: Age related hearing loss is in the top ten contributors to the global burden of disease and one of the largest modifiable risk factors for age-related dementia. However, awareness of the consequences of untreated hearing loss is poor and many adults do not seek hearing assessment. Despite World Health Organisation recommendations, no EU country currently has a national adult screening programme. METHOD: The aim of this trial was to raise awareness of hearing loss by providing screening audiograms in a range of community settings. Results were explained to every participant and p

Exploring factors influencing the hearing test and hearing aid adoption among Japanese older adults: Implications of recognizing the hearing loss-dementia relationship.

OBJECTIVE: The hearing aid adoption rate among older adults in Japan is lower than that in other developed countries. Herein, a survey was conducted to identify this bottleneck and develop countermeasures. This study aimed to examine whether raising awareness of the relationship between hearing loss and dementia is significant for hearing tests and adopting hearing aids. METHODS: A questionnaire was administered to participants aged 65 or older who visited a general hospital to determine the background factors (1) for a recent history of hearing tests, (2) for the desire to visit an otolaryng

Is it useful to repeat the hearing screening test before hospital discharge?

UNLABELLED: Universal newborn hearing screening in infants without hearing-risk factors is performed in many settings using otoacoustic emissions (OAE) within the first hours of life. A proportion of initial 'referrals' reflect transient, non-pathological factors rather than genuine congenital hearing loss; minimising these is crucial to programme effectiveness. OBJECTIVE: To assess the usefulness of repeating OAE screening before hospital discharge in neonates without hearing-risk factors who have an abnormal result on their first test. RESULTS: A total of 2,667 neonates were studied. On OA

A language-independent hearing screening self-test at school-entry.

The usage of a tablet-based language-independent self-test involving the recognition of ecological sounds in background noise, the Sound Ear Check, was investigated. The results of 692 children, aged between 5 and 9 years and 4 months, recruited in seven different countries, were used to analyze the validity and the cultural independence of test. Three different test procedures, namely a monaural adaptive procedure, a procedure presenting the sounds dichotically in diotic noise, and a procedure presenting all the sounds with a fixed signal-to-noise ratio and a stopping rule were studied. Preimplantation genetic testing for hereditary hearing loss in Chinese population.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical validity of preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) to prevent hereditary hearing loss (HL) in Chinese population. METHODS: A PGT procedure combining multiple annealing and looping-based amplification cycles (MALBAC) and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) linkage analyses with a single low-depth next-generation sequencing run was implemented. Forty-three couples carried pathogenic variants in autosomal recessive non-syndromic HL genes, GJB2 and SLC26A4, and four couples carried pathogenic variants in rare HL genes: KCNQ4, PTPN11, PAX3, and USH2A were enroll

Genetic testing hearing loss: The challenge of non syndromic mimics.

Congenital hearing loss is a common cause of morbidity in early childhood. There are multiple reasons for congenital hearing impairment, with genetic contribution becoming increasingly recognized. Sensorineural hearing loss has classically been viewed as either syndromic or non-syndromic. With the advent of DNA sequencing technology such as NextGen sequencing, a subcategory has arisen, that of non-syndromic mimics (NSM)s. NSMs present initially as isolated hearing loss but as the patient ages other phenotypes become evident. Early diagnosis of these conditions is imperative as patients may suf

Newborn hearing screening and genetic testing in 8974 Brazilian neonates.

OBJECTIVE: An early diagnosis has been a priority in the audiological practice. Identifying hearing loss until 3 months old through Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and intervention before 6 months old, minimize the impact of auditory loss in the health and communication development of these children. However, in the clinical practice, despite the help of the risk indicators in the audiological and etiological diagnosis, the integrated services have come up against the challenge of determining the causes of auditory loss, bearing in mind that approximately 50% of the subjects who have conge

Degeneration of the hearing nerve and its detection by distorted-speech testing.

A detailed description of the physiology of the auditory system (including new essential knowledge) is provided, followed by the description of five morphological levels of acoustic signal analysis, of which four play a significant part in establishing the selection capacity of human hearing. As an essential phenomenon connected with loss of the analyzing capacity of the ear, ascending degeneration of the afferent nerve fibers of the inner hair cells and of the hearing nerve (after destruction of the inner hair cells) develops. A distorted-speech test is submitted that offers a simple and easi

No evidence of hearing loss due to fetal acoustic stimulation test.

The fetal acoustic stimulation test is used increasingly for fetal assessment. To evaluate the possibility of acoustic trauma, 465 children who had been exposed to vibroacoustic stimulation in utero were screened at 4 years of age for high-frequency hearing loss. A hand-held audiometer with test tones at 25 dB for 1000 and 4000 Hz was used because responses at this level indicate hearing within normal limits for middle and high frequencies. Thirty-one children failed the test. Failure to respond was followed by inspection of the ear canal for wax, tympanometry, and reflex measurement to assess

A descending LOT-Bekesy screening test for functional hearing loss.

This study investigated the screening efficiency of a descending version of Hattler's Lengthened Off-time (LOT) Bekesy test. The Descending LOT (DELOT) test was administered to 24 subjects who presented unequivocal audiometric evidence of functional hearing loss during clinical examinations and 30 subjects with no audiometric evidence of functional loss. The DELOT format substantially increased screening sensitivity: 29.2% more functional group subjects and 42.2% more functional group ears were identified correctly relative to LOT test identifications. There was one marginally positive DELOT o

Test of environmental exposure to arsenic and hearing changes in exposed children.

Arsenic determination was carried out on hair, urine, and blood samples taken from groups of 10-year-old boys, each numbering 20 to 25 individuals, residing in a region polluted by arsenic. In all the examined materials considerably elevated concentrations of arsenic were found. The relation of the observed levels of arsenic to the distance of the place of residence up to a distance of more than 30 km from the source of the emissions was studied. On the basis of the results obtained, the most advantageous material for estimation of nonoccupational exposure to arsenic seems to be hair, in spite

An Automated System for Sound Localization Testing in Hearing-Impaired Listeners.

Sound localization is a fundamental component of auditory perception, yet its clinical assessment remains technically demanding. Although free-field localization tests using semicircular loudspeaker arrays are considered the gold standard, many existing protocols rely on examiner-driven procedures and provide limited guidance for the functional interpretation of localization errors. An automated sound localization protocol that combines standardized stimulus delivery and response acquisition with a function-oriented interpretive framework is presented. Stimuli are presented from predefined azi
