Although patients suffering from heart failure (HF) have an increased incidence of nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia after opened heart surgery, the impact of cardiopulmonary bypass with cardiac arrest (CPB) on mesenteric vascular circulation in such situation remains unexplored. Therefore, the present study investigates the effects of CPB on mesenteric vascular reactivity, regional metabolism, and oxidative stress in an experimental model of HF. Volume-overload HF was induced in six dogs by bilateral femoral arteriovenous fistula. Six sham-operated dogs were used as controls. Eight weeks later

We report two boys aged 4 and 10 months who suffered cardiac arrests after induction of anaesthesia. Both infants had no personal or family history of myopathy. In both cases anaesthesia was induced by inhalation with halothane and N2O/O2 (70/30). To facilitate tracheal intubation both were given succinylcholine after the administration of atropine. The 4-month-old developed muscle rigidity and cardiac arrest occurred immediately after tracheal intubation. Resuscitation was unsuccessful. Laboratory findings during resuscitation showed elevated serum potassium levels of more than 10 mmol/l and

A 40 year old woman who underwent combined heart-lung transplant for familial severe pulmonary hypertension experienced episodes of nonsustained ventricular tachycardia followed by sudden ventricular fibrillation arrest 8 days after transplant. Postarrest investigations revealed left lower lobe herniation into the right lower hemithorax, prompting emergent reoperation, and hernia reduction. Arrhythmias resolved following reduction of the herniated lung and facilitated rapid weaning from vasopressor and ventilatory support. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of cardiac arrest due

BACKGROUND: Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is the sudden cessation of normal cardiac activity with hemodynamic collapse. This usually leads to sudden cardiac death (SCD) when cardiopulmonary resuscitation is not undertaken. In patients undergoing heart valve surgery, postoperative SCA is a complication with a high risk of death, cerebral hypoxia and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Therefore, knowledge of the predictors of postoperative SCA is extremely important as it enables the identification of patients at risk of this complication and the application of the special surveillance an

Current guidelines do not inform about use of therapeutic hypothermia among heart failure (HF) patients who suffer from cardiac arrest. We assessed the risk of mortality associated with hypothermia among cardiac arrest survivors with HF. This analysis includes 1,416 comatose patients with cardiac arrest who achieved return of spontaneous circulation on admission and had a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) assessment or HF admission within the previous year. HF was defined as either previous episode of HF or presence of left ventricular ejection fraction <50%. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95%

BACKGROUND: Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in athletes is a rare but catastrophic event, most often associated with underlying cardiac pathology. Differentiating physiological remodeling ("athlete's heart") from pathological conditions such as cardiomyopathy or channelopathy remains a major clinical challenge.
CASE SUMMARY: A 25-year-old professional athlete presented with recurrent syncope and was found to have frequent premature ventricular complexes with polymorphic ventricular tachycardia and prolonged QT interval. She developed cardiac arrest due to torsades de pointes and was successfully

BACKGROUND: Sudden cardiac death accounted for approximately 20% to 35% of deaths among patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) in contemporary trials, yet a reliable risk stratification scheme has not been described for patients with HFpEF.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify risk factors for ventricular tachyarrhythmias (VTAs) or cardiac arrest in patients with HFpEF.
METHODS: Patients diagnosed as having HFpEF between 2015 and 2022 were included in a retrospective cohort at a single cardiac specialty hospital. Baseline demographics and clinical variables,

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the effect of known heart disease on post-out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) survival outcomes, and its association with factors influencing survival.
METHODS: This was an observational, retrospective study involving an OHCA database from seven Asian countries in 2009-2012. Heart disease was defined as a documented diagnosis of coronary artery disease or congenital heart disease. Patients with non-traumatic arrests for whom resuscitation was attempted and with known medical histories were included. Differences in demographics, arrest characteristics and s

BACKGROUND: Hospitalized patients with heart failure are at risk for cardiac arrest. The ability to predict who may survive such an event with or without neurological deficit would enhance the information on which patients and providers establish resuscitative preferences.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We identified 13 063 adult patients with acute heart failure who had cardiac arrest at 457 hospitals participating in the National Registry of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2007. Neurological status was determined on admission and discharge by cerebral performanc

BACKGROUNDS: Myocardial impairment resulting from cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) contributes to the elevated mortality in diabetes. Luteolin, a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound abundant in vegetables, fruits, and nuts, has been shown to mitigate myocardial I/R injury in diabetes by suppressing oxidative stress. However, whether luteolin confers cardioprotection following cardiac arrest (CA) and CPR in diabetes remains unclear. Sirtuin 3 (Sirt3), a mitochondrial deacetylase, has been reported to attenuate diabetic cardiomyopathy by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation-mediat

AIMS: The risk, characteristics, and outcome of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) remain scarcely investigated.
METHODS AND RESULTS: An epidemiological registry-based study was conducted. Using time-dependent Cox regression models fitted with a nested case-control design, hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals of OHCA of presumed cardiac cause (2001-19) associated with simple, moderate, and severe CHD were calculated. Moreover, using multiple logistic regression, we investigated the association between pre-hospital OHCA characteri

We describe a 31-year-old woman with pulmonary homograft rupture and ventricular fibrillation arrest complicating a transcatheter pulmonary valve (TPV) procedure. She underwent extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) with immediate surgical repair including bioprosthetic pulmonary valve replacement. She had difficulty weaning off ECMO due to hyperacute failure of the valve and ultimately underwent successful hybrid TPV with complete recovery. This case illustrates the importance of the heart team approach during catheter and surgical interventions in adult congenital heart disease.

INTRODUCTION Unexplained sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), occurs in up to 10% of patients and is often attributed to an inherited arrhythmia syndrome. Family screening and genetic testing may help clarify the cause of unexplained SCA. OBJECTIVES We aimed to assess the usefulness of clinical evaluation and genetic testing in patients after unexplained SCA and in their families. PATIENTS AND METHODS In the years 2014-2017, we studied 44 unrelated patients after unexplained SCA and 96 of their relatives. All patients and relatives underwent comprehensive cardiac evaluation. In 31 patients with SCA, n

BACKGROUND: Cellular injury is not avoidable with current cardioplegic solutions. The effect of adenosine on reducing cardiac injury post-surgery is controversial. The objective of the current study is to evaluate the effect of fast cardioplegic arrest induced by adenosine on high sensitive cardiac troponin I after heart valve surgery.
METHODS: Forty-five (45) patients with rheumatic heart diseases underwent heart valve surgery using conventional approach through median sternotomy. They were classified into two groups, group I (n=21) patients received 0.25mg/kg adenosine into the aortic root

BACKGROUND: The knowledge of prognosis following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) in patients with heart failure heart failure (HF) is sparse. The objective of this study was to compare the outcome after OHCA among patients with and without HF.
METHODS: We studied 45,293 patients who were included for the Danish cardiac arrest registry between 2001 and 2014. Patients were stratified into two groups based on the presence of HF prior to cardiac arrest. The primary outcome was 30-day survival and secondary outcome was anoxic brain damage or permanent nursing home admission at 1-year among 3

BACKGROUND: A comprehensive quality improvement programme sustainably reduced cardiac arrest (CA) in collaborating North American paediatric cardiac intensive care units. This approach has not been replicated outside the collaborating centres, where the principal focus remains on improving the management, rather than prevention, of CA.
METHODS: A CA prevention bundle was implemented in patients with a cardiac diagnosis perceived to be at high risk of CA when admitted to the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) from August 2023. Risk-adjusted CA rate was monitored through resetting sequential
