Low-frequency breathing instabilities induced by intense plasma-gas heating.

Instabilities are a common occurrence in plasma discharges where they play an important role in system behavior and performance. While such instabilities are typically in the kHz and MHz range, this work reports a low frequency (∼100Hz) instability observed in supersonic inductively coupled plasmas. Using a novel swirl gas injection, two concentric, counter-propagating vortices are produced that segment the flow field. While discharge properties only vary moderately within the outer vortex, intense plasma-gas heating leads to pressure fluctuations that drive a large-amplitude instability withi

Mathematical Descriptions of Damage to Cells and Tissues Following Heating.

The cells of the cardiovascular system can experience temperature excesses of a few degrees during a diseased state or of tens of degrees during a thermal therapy treatment. These raised temperatures may be acute or of long duration. The multiple cell lines that compose each tissue then react, in approximate order of increasing thermal insult, by expressing heat shock proteins, undergoing apoptosis, or suffering necrosis. Mathematical models of the response of cells could aid in planning and designing thermal therapies. The multifactor nature of the cell response makes it challenging to develo

Passive thigh heating improves isokinetic but not isotonic muscle function.

PURPOSE: Optimal skeletal muscle function occurs when tissue temperature is elevated above resting. This study examined muscle torque production and maximal velocity responses to passive thigh heating on two occasions to determine the efficacy and reliability of the intervention. METHODS: Twenty active, young participants (10 female) completed two identical visits whereby one thigh was wrapped in a water perfused garment circulating 50 °C water for 90 min; with the contralateral limb remaining unheated. Four maximal isokinetic repetitions were conducted at three speeds (slow, 60°/s; moderate,

Effectiveness of heating hospital sink drainpipes for reducing bacterial colonization.

BACKGROUND: Hospital sink drains act as reservoirs for nosocomial infection-causing bacteria. Drainpipe thermal disinfection units (DTDUs) inhibit or reduce bacterial colonization by elevating drainpipe temperature. However, their effectiveness remains to be comprehensively evaluated. AIM: This study investigated the effectiveness of a DTDU, in addition to routine cleaning and disinfection, in preventing bacterial colonization of new metal drainpipes in a clinical setting. METHODS: This non-blinded parallel group comparative study was conducted in the intensive care unit of Nagasaki Universi

Diclofenac Removal by Alkylammonium Clay Minerals Prepared over Microwave Heating.

Diclofenac is an emerging contaminant widely detected in water and has had adverse effects on the biota. In this study, the adsorbents were prepared by reacting tetradecyl-(C14), hexadecyl-(C16), and octadecyltrimethylammonium (C18) bromides with sodium vermiculite (Na-Ver) and used for the removal of the first time for diclofenac sodium from aqueous solution. Synthesis was carried out in a microwave-assisted reactor operating at 50 °C for 5 min, using proportions of organic salts in 100 and 200% of the phyllosilicate cation exchange capacity. The stability of loaded alkylammonium solids was e

Heating-induced peripheral limb microvascular vasodilation reduces arterial wave reflection.

Arterial wave reflection augments cardiac afterload increasing myocardial demands. Mathematical models and comparative physiology suggest that the lower limbs are the primary source of reflected waves; however, in vivo human evidence corroborating these observations is lacking. This study was designed to determine whether the vasculature of the lower or upper limbs contributes more to wave reflection. We hypothesized that lower limb heating will result in larger reductions in central wave reflection compared with upper limb heating due to local vasodilation of a larger microvascular bed. Fifte

Vaping cartridge heating element compositions and evidence of high temperatures.

BACKGROUND: Identifying the functional materials inside vaping devices can help inform efforts to understand risk. While nicotine E-cigarette components and metals have been characterized in several previous studies, the internal component compositions of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) cartridge designs are not as well known. The 2019-20 e-cigarette or vaping product use associated lung injury (EVALI) outbreak has been associated with THC devices containing vitamin E acetate (VEA), possibly mediated by chemical reactions with internal cartridge components and high filament temperatures. METHODS:

Simulation of Laser Lithotripsy-Induced Heating in the Urinary Tract.

PURPOSE: Holmium laser lithotripsy is a common modality used to fragment urinary stones during ureteroscopy. Laser energy deposited during activation produces heat and potentially causes thermal bioeffects. We aimed to characterize laser-induced heating through a computational simulation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A finite-element model was developed and used to estimate temperature in the urinary tract. Axisymmetric models of laser lithotripsy in a renal calyx, the renal pelvis, and proximal ureter were created. Heat generation by laser and heat transfer were simulated under different laser pow

Glass softening kinetics in the limit of high heating rates.

Surface-facilitated, front-propagated softening of glassy materials is now a well-known phenomenon, which is common to stable vapor deposited glasses. As we demonstrate in our recent communication, this softening pathway is not unique to vapor-deposited vitreous phases and can be observed in ordinary melt-cooled glasses in the limit of high heating rates [Cubeta et al., J. Chem. Phys. 147(7), 071101 (2017)]. Expanding on this preliminary report, we use our thin-wire, quasi-adiabatic fast scanning calorimetry technique to investigate softening kinetics of micrometer scale, viscous liquid methyl

Erionite-Na upon heating: dehydration dynamics and exchangeable cations mobility.

Erionite is a fibrous zeolite significantly more tumorigenic than crocidolite asbestos upon inhalation. In recent years, several papers have been published aimed at characterizing from the crystal-chemical point of view erionite fibres. As their toxicity has been ascribed to Fe acquired within the human body, studies aimed at characterizing the iron topochemistry have also been published, suggesting a possible important role played by the ionic exchange properties and cations mobility of this zeolite on developing carcinogenicity. Here we report the analysis results of the thermal behaviour of

Human thermal physiological and psychological responses under different heating environments.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that many residents of severely cold areas of China who use floor heating (FH) systems feel warmer but drier compared to those using radiant heating (RH) systems. However, this phenomenon has not been verified experimentally. In order to validate the empirical hypothesis, and research the differences of human physiological and psychological responses in these two asymmetrical heating environments, an experiment was designed to mimic FH and RH systems. The subjects participating in the experiment were volunteer college-students. During the experiment, the indoor air

Environmental tobacco smoke, woodstove heating and risk of asthma symptoms.

The effect of common indoor combustion heating sources on childhood asthma is not well described. The objective was to determine if the use of woodstoves in the home or other factors such as environmental tobacco smoke exposure were associated with the frequency of asthma-related symptoms among children in a rural community. Having a person in the household who smoked was associated with a more than doubling in risk for wheezing and other asthma-related symptoms. The use of woodstoves or other types of heating in the homes of children was not associated with reported wheezing during the winter

Carbon dioxide gas heating inside laparoscopic insufflators has no effect.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Within recent years, the insufflation technique for laparoscopy has become more important with high flow insufflators (> or = 30 L/min) and high gas turn over (> or = 800 L/procedure). Increased amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas used can lead to laparoscopic hypothermia. We studied the insufflator with versus insufflators without internal gas heating (inside insufflator) as a sufficient method of hypothermia prevention at different flow rates. METHODS: With a computer-based data acquisition model, different standard insufflators with internal gas heating (Snowden

The prolactin responses to active and passive heating in man.

The aim of this study was to compare the prolactin and blood pressure responses at identical core temperatures during active and passive heat stresses, using prolactin as an indirect marker of central fatigue. Twelve male subjects cycled to exhaustion at 60% maximal oxygen uptake (VO2peak) in a room maintained at 33 degrees C (active). In a second trial they were passively heated (passive) in a water bath (41.56 +/- 1.65 degrees C) until core temperature was equal to the core temperature observed at exhaustion during the active trial. Blood samples were taken from an indwelling venous cannula

Microwave heating in the management of postmastectomy upper limb lymphedema.

The results of treating chronic lymphedema using microwave heating are described in 45 patients with postmastectomy lymphedema of the upper extremity. Forty-five patients showed a significant (p < 0.01) reduction in the amount of peripheral edema after two courses of treatment. The incidence and severity of secondary acute inflammation (erysipelas) were also sharply reduced (p < 0.01). The elasticity of the soft tissue was restored.

Reflex control of facial flushing during body heating in man.

Facial temperature and amplitude of capillary pulsations from the forehead and cheeks were measured shortly before and after pharmacological blockade of the stellate ganglion in 9 patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy of an upper limb, and in 1 other patient with erythromelalgia of all four limbs. Patients were then heated to determine the effect of sympathetic blockade on mediation of thermoregulatory facial flushing. Release of vasoconstrictor tone following stellate ganglion blockade was invariably followed by an increase in orbital and cheek temperature, and by similar but less consis

Exertional Heat Illness-From Identifying Heat Rash to Treating Heat Stroke.

Heat-related illness commonly affects adolescent patients, especially as summer approaches and global temperature extremes worsen. Basic counseling on sunburn prevention can decrease the risk for future malignancies, and rapidly preventing, identifying, and treating heat stroke can prevent severe morbidity and mortality. This article will review the epidemiology of exertional heat-related illness and the variations in presentations and pathology, from heat rash and sunburn to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. By the end of this review clinicians should be able to identify and treat different he
