Emergency physicians are familiar with British anti-Lewisite (BAL) because it is a heavy metal-chelating agent that is recommended in some cases of metal poisoning, especially arsenic. Although there are more modern chelating agents, the fact that BAL is still recommended and stocked by hospital pharmacies more than 60 years after its initial synthesis is itself remarkable. During World War II, BAL minimized the risk to the Allied infantry of injury or death from Lewisite, a very potent arsenic-based chemical warfare agent. Once developed, BAL revolutionized the treatment of heavy metal poison

The actions of purified tetra-, tri-, and di-ethyl lead on rats and rat brain slices and brain brei have been examined. A method based on a reaction with dithizone and capable of estimating tri- and di-ethyl tin in rat tissues has been developed. After injection into rats tetraethyl lead is converted into triethyl lead and this is responsible for the toxic effects. Diethyl lead is much less toxic and the effects are different. The utilization of lactate and the oxidation of glucose by brain brei and slices respectively are inhibited by triethyl lead. A similar effect is seen in slices taken fr

AIM: This review provides information about heavy metal occurrence in the environment, destructive mechanisms, and lethal effects on fish.
SUMMARY: Heavy metals (HMs) are one of the major causes of environmental contamination globally. The advancement of industries has led to the emanation of toxic substances into the environment. HMs are stable, imperishable compounds and can accumulate in different fish organs when they reach the aquatic regimes. The most ubiquitous HMs are chromium, arsenic, mercury, cadmium, lead, copper, and nickel which can pollute the environment and affect the physiol

In recent years, there has been a growing concern about the negative impact of unforeseen contaminants such as metals in commonly consumed food items, which pose a threat to human well-being. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to evaluate the levels of these contaminants to guarantee the safe consumption of these food items. The goal of the current research is to determine the levels of essential (EMs: Mg, Ca, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, and Zn) and potentially toxic metals (PTMs: Al, Cr, Ni, As, Cd, and Pb) in various brands of wheat-based sweets. One hundred samples were collected and analysed via fl

BACKGROUND: There is limited research examining the relationship between lead (Pb) exposure and medically diagnosed attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. The role of mercury (Hg) and cadmium (Cd) exposures in ADHD development is even less clear.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the relationship between Pb, Hg, and Cd and ADHD in children living inside and outside a Lead Investigation Area (LIA) of a former lead refinery in Omaha, NE.
METHODS: We carried out a case-control study with 71 currently medically diagnosed ADHD cases and 58 controls from a psychiatric clinic and a pedia

Heavy metals are, unfortunately, present in the air, water, and food supply. Cases of severe acute lead, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium poisoning are rare; however, when they do occur an effective, non-toxic treatment is essential. In addition, chronic, low-level exposure to lead in the soil and in residues of lead-based paint, to mercury in the atmosphere, in dental amalgams and in seafood, and to cadmium and arsenic in the environment and in cigarette smoke is much more common than acute exposure. Meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) is a sulfhydryl-containing, water-soluble, non-toxic, or

Metal toxicity can cause hematologic abnormalities and hemolysis. To evaluate the relationship of anemia with metal contamination in children, the following elements were quantified in dry blood: silicon, chromium, lead, titanium, vanadium, nickel, arsenic, manganese, and cadmium. A total of 88 samples of anemic children and 208 of non-anemic children aged 6-12 years were analyzed. Lead (35.1%), chromium (24.3%), vanadium (24.3%), nickel (45.6%), and silicon (48.6%) were identified in the samples, with titanium only detected in anemic children. The average level of arsenic was higher in anemic

In the present study, we investigated if thiol-reducing agents are capable of altering mercury (Hg2+), lead (Pb2+) and cadmium (Cd2+) effects on platelet glutamatergic system. Dimercaprol (BAL), a dithiol chelating agent therapeutically used for the treatment of heavy metals poisoning, was capable of protecting the [3H]-glutamate binding against the effects caused by Pb2+ and Hg2+. 2,3-Dimercaptopropane-1-sulfonic acid (DMPS), another dithiol-reducing chelating agent, was capable of protecting the effect caused by Cd2+, Pb2+ and Hg2+. The similar effect was observed with addition of dithiothre

A recently developed methodology, which combines voltammetry, ITC, ESI-MS and several chemometric tools, has been applied for the first time to the study of As(III) complexes. The ligands considered, DMSA and DMPS, are commonly used to treat heavy metal poisoning. The study yields a reliable and consistent picture of the binding of As(III) by the chelating therapy agents DMSA and DMPS providing an unambiguous description of the stoichiometries of the complexes (ML(2), with the occasional appearance of ML in the case of DMSA), both ligands have stability constants of the same order, with a logβ

Aluminum-based water treatment residual (WTR)-coated wood mulches were synthesized and tested for removal of heavy metals and phosphorus (P) in synthetic urban stormwater. WTRs are an industrial waste produced from coagulation in water treatment facilities, primarily composed of amorphous aluminum or iron hydroxides. Batch tests showed that the composite filter media could effectively adsorb 97% lead (Pb), 76% zinc (Zn), 81% copper (Cu) and 97% P from the synthetic stormwater (Pb = 100 μg/L, Zn = 800 μg/L, Cu = 100 μg/L, P = 2.30 mg/L, and pH = 7.0) within 120 min, due to the presence of alumi

Analyses of cadmium concentrations in biological material are performed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), but also electrochemical methods, neutron activation analysis (NAA), and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF). The predominant sample matrices include blood, plasma, serum, and urine, as well as hair, saliva, and tissue of kidney cortex, lung, and liver. While cadmium in blood reveals rather the recent exposure situation, cadmium in urine reflects the body burden and is an indicator for the cumulative long term exposure.A

In recent decades, the menace of heavy metals to food security and human health has become a serious concern. Given its status as the primary provider of food globally, significant research has been done to ensure the safe cultivation of rice, particularly concerning the mitigation of heavy metal contamination. Therefore, this article focuses on the effects and poisoning mechanism of heavy metals, primarily cadmium, on rice. Here, we have discussed the absorption, translocation, and toxicity mechanism of cadmium in rice and the external factors, such as soil pH, organic matter, microorganisms,

Health hazards caused by heavy metals have become a great concern to the population. Lead and arsenic are one of the most important current global environmental toxicants. Their toxic manifestations are being considered caused primarily due to the imbalance between pro-oxidant and antioxidant homeostasis and also due to a high affinity of these metals for thiol groups on functional proteins. They also interfere with a number of other body functions and are known to affect central nervous system (CNS), hematopoietic system, liver and kidneys and produce serious disorders. They produce both acut

Exposure to heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury is of immediate environmental concern. The present study was aimed at establishing a direct relationship between heavy metal poisoning and thyroid dysfunction. Cadmium and mercury treatment at LD50 levels resulted in severe thyrotoxicosis in the rabbit. Within 24 h of intramuscular administration of cadmium chloride 15 mg.kg-1 body weight (bw) and mercury chloride 20 mg.kg-1 bw, thyroid peroxidase activity increased significantly over the control with a concomitant rise in the triiodothyronine (T3) titre. On the other hand, there was a remar

The rapid industrial development has led to serious cadmium (Cd) pollution. Cd is a toxic heavy metal placing severe health threat to human. Cd can enter the body through the atmosphere, water, soil and food, and has a long half-life (10-30 years), it largely accumulates in kidneys, liver, bone and other organs and causes irreversible damage to the target organs. Cd pollution has also further caused certain carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risk. This study summarizes the current situation of Cd pollution, the toxicity of specific target organs, carcinogenic risk and non-carcinogenic ri

We studied kidneys of rats intoxicated with uranylnitrate (UN) or subjected to 5/6 nephrectomy (NX) or after a combination of both procedures (NX-UN). Our observations indicate that UN causes impressive changes of ultrastructure (partial loss of brush border, appearance of intercellular clefts in the epithelial barrier) and altered protein expression (α-SMA, collagen I and III) in proximal tubule cells. Renal parameters (creatinine clearance, proteinuria) seemed to be unaffected. Blood pressure recovered to normal values within 12 months. However ultrastructural and functional restoration of m

Rhizomatous traditional Chinese medicines (RTCMs) are widely crushed into powder and swallowed directly as medicine and food or health products to treat various diseases; however, they may contain toxic microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals. Currently, there are no reports on the detection of MPs and MP-heavy metal synergies in RTCMs. In this study, we selected eight representative RTCMs to investigate the abundance, types, sizes, and polymers of MP and heavy metals and to assess the level of contamination of MPs and synergies between MPs and heavy metals in RTCMs. The abundance of MPs in diffe

Mercury (Hg) and cadmium (Cd) are the major toxic heavy metals and are known to induce neurotoxicity. Although many studies have shown that several heavy metals have neurotoxic effects, the cellular and molecular mechanisms thereof are still not clear. Oxidative stress is reported to be a common and important mechanism in cytotoxicity induced by heavy metals. However, the assays for identifying toxic mechanisms were not performed under the same experimental conditions, making it difficult to compare toxic properties of the heavy metals. In this study, we investigated the mechanisms underlying

The literature review presents data on the effect of organic and inorganic compounds, the so-called "main" xenobiotics (lead, mercury) on children and adolescents. It is noted that the effect of each heavy metal is different. Therefore, only their total assessment (blood, urine, saliva, hair, biological tissues) makes it possible to determine the level of toxic effects on the child and confirm the clinical decision. "Carrying mercury", in the absence of clinical signs of intoxication, does not always correlate with chronic poisoning. Ranking of clinical syndromes with the level of heavy metals
