Helicobacter species can colonize the gastrointestinal tract of both humans and animals, and are associated with gastrointestinal and extra-gastrointestinal diseases. Some studies indicate that animals, health professionals, and people in close contact with animals might be at higher risk for infection with gastric Helicobacter spp. Considering that veterinarians are professionals at risk for infection with zoonotic gastric Helicobacters and are also seen by many as health communicators concerning zoonoses, the aim of this study was to evaluate the Portuguese veterinarians' perception and know

A 45-year-old Japanese man underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy, which revealed spotty redness at the gastric fornix, mucosal swelling, diffuse redness in the corpus, and mucosal atrophy in the gastric angle and antrum. Histological examination showed rod-shaped bacteria that appeared larger than Helicobacter pylori. The patient tested positive for rapid urease test, and serum anti-H. pylori IgG antibody test results were negative. Further examination of the bacteria revealed that H. suis antibody test was positive, and the presence of H. suis was confirmed using H. suis-specific real-time PCR

A substantial number of reports published in the last year have contributed to a better understanding of both human and animal infection with non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter species (NHPH). Gastric infection of humans with Helicobacter suis and Helicobacter felis as well as unidentified NHPH has been described to cause a chronic gastritis and a variety of clinical symptoms, whereas enterohepatic NHPH, including Helicobacter cinaedi, Helicobacter bilis, and Helicobacter canis, have been reported to be associated with human diseases such as bacteremia, cellulitis, cutaneous diseases, and fe

This study examined the prevalence of Helicobacter infection in the pyloric mucosa of pigs and its histopathological and molecular characteristics. Forty porcine pyloric samples were examined for Helicobacter infection by silver staining and PCR assay. The PCR product (376 bp) was digested with NdeII to differentiate between Helicobacter heilmannii and Helicobacter pylori. Another PCR assay run to produce an 1157 bp fragment was performed using a primer set designed from the 16S rRNA gene of Candidatus H. suis, and its product was cloned and sequenced. Infection rates were 62.5% (25/40) and 95

Interest in possible microbiological causes of gastritis has significantly increased since the discovery of Helicobacter pylori. Recently a spiral bacterium named Gastrospirillum hominis was described in association with chronic gastritis in adult patients. Here, we present the finding of Gastrospirillum hominis in the gastric biopsies of two children who underwent upper endoscopy for gastrointestinal symptoms. The frequency of Gastrospirillum hominis (0.3%) in our pediatric population was similar to that reported in adults. We observed a chronic gastritis associated with the spiral bacteria w

To date, two Helicobacter species, Helicobacter pylori and 'Helicobacter heilmannii' (formerly named 'Gastrospirillum hominis'), have been identified from the human stomach. In this study, we observed non-H. pylori-shaped bacteria in gastric tissue sections and successfully isolated them by cultivation. Elongated bacteria were isolated from a patient with gastric-mucosa-associated lymphoid-tissue lymphoma who had been diagnosed as H. pylori-negative by culture, rapid urease test and histopathology in another hospital. The bacteria were grown only on chocolate agar in a CO2 incubator, appeared

We found a tightly coiled bacterium, Helicobacter heilmannii that is distinct from Helicobacter pylori in the gastric mucosal biopsy of a 55-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman, both of whom had previous history of intermittent epigastric pain. The organisms were distributed in the antral mucosa, which was endoscopically interpreted as demonstrating chronic gastritis in one case, and being normal in the other. Histologically, the affected mucosa presented a mild chronic gastritis without activity and a moderate chronic gastritis with marker activity, respectively. The bacteria seen on haemato

Evidence is rapidly accumulating that Helicobacter pylori is a major risk factor for human gastric adenocarcinomas and all low-grade B-cell gastric lymphomas. Given this, there is a need to develop animal models with a view to discovering not only how carcinogenesis is initiated, but also how the process can be prevented. The lack of H. pylori animal models suitable for long-term studies means that alternatives are needed. The most productive models are likely to be the Helicobacter mustelae-infected ferret or the mouse infected with either Helicobacter felis or 'Helicobacter heilmannii'. The

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter-negative gastritis has been increasingly reported. Molecular techniques as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) may detect bacterial DNA in histologically negative gastritis.
AIM: To evaluate of Helicobacter PCR in gastric biopsies for the daily diagnostics of Helicobacter-negative gastritis.
METHODS: Over a 5-year period, routine biopsies with chronic gastritis reminiscent of Helicobacter infection, but negative by histology, were tested by using a H. pylori specific PCR. Subsequently, PCR-negative samples were re-evaluated using PCR for other Helicobacter species.

The aim of this study was to determine whether there is an association between Helicobacter spp. infection of the feline stomach and the presence of gastric lesions and epithelial proliferation within the mucosa of this tissue. The study included 23 pet cats of both sexes and of varied age and breed. Eighteen of these animals were clinically normal and five had a history of chronic vomiting. Samples of the mucosa of the pyloric antrum, corpus and fundus were collected by gastroscopy. The presence of Helicobacter spp. was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or Warthin-Starry (WS) stain

In addition to Helicobacter pylori, many non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacters (NHPH) are able to cause gastric disease in humans. Cats are a natural reservoir for many of these species. Accordingly, living in close and intimate contact with animals has been identified as a risk factor, and an important zoonotic significance has therefore been attributed to NHPH. To determine the prevalence and associated gastric histopathological changes of Helicobacter species, the gastric mucosa of 71 cats were evaluated. Only four presented normal histopathological mucosa with the absence of spiral-shaped

Gastrospirillum hominis is a spiral-shaped bacterium found in the stomach. It has been implicated as a possible cause of chronic gastritis. We report two cases of G. hominis colonization observed in a series of 175 healthy, asymptomatic volunteers investigated for Helicobacter pylori. None of the volunteers had symptoms or a history of gastrointestinal disease. Both carriers of G. hominis had histological signs of chronic, active antral gastritis. Multiple tests for H. pylori were negative. The prevalence of this spiral bacterium in healthy, asymptomatic individuals may be as low as in symptom

Helicobacter pylori and non-H. pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) are associated with gastritis, ulcer, and gastric neoplasia. Because of the impossibility to culture them, diagnosis remains based on microscopic examination and molecular analysis of biopsies. Owing to the lack of data concerning antibiotic resistance of NHPH, infected patients are usually treated using antibiotics, including clarithromycin. Herein, we describe, for the first time a human infection by Helicobacter suis harboring a mutation associated to clarithromycin resistance in H. pylori. Eradication was successful with a metronida

Dyspepsia is a common clinical problem. Its causes include peptic ulcer disease, gastroesophageal reflux, and functional (nonulcer) dyspepsia. A detailed clinical description of pain does not reliably differentiate the cause. Approximately 80% of gastroscopies are performed for the investigation of dyspepsia. "Gastritis" is diagnosed endoscopically in 59% of all stomachs, although in only 3% are the changes severe. Pathologic examination of unselected gastric biopsy specimens reveals that abnormalities are present in 62-73%, but there is only a weak correlation between endoscopic and histologi

The occurrence and topographical mapping of the gastric Helicobacter-like organisms (GHLOs) and their association with histological changes were studied in apparently healthy dogs and cats. Multiple samples were collected for histological examination from the fundus, corpus and antrum of the stomach of 10 dogs and 10 cats. Fundus and corpus were also sampled for transmission electron microscopy (three dogs, six cats), and for culture (eight dogs, six cats). In all dogs, GHLOs were detected in the fundus and corpus, and in the antrum of nine dogs, and significantly more often in the fundus and

The role of Helicobacter pylori in generating of the chronic gastritis and in the maintaining of the gastroduodenal ulcerous disease, has been a major medical discovery of these past years in human gastroenterology. More recently in Man, studies have showed that the gastric tumours (adenocarcinoma, lymphoma) are epidemiologically associated with the H. pylori infection. Although the H. pylori infection is the one of the most frequent in the word, the epidemiologic and ecologic aspects of this infections are still not very well known. Thanks to phylogenic studies using the new molecular biology
