Concerns about the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on child sexual exploitation and abuse have been expressed by police and child protection organizations. However, there are limited data about how the pandemic may have caused changes in the help-seeking behavior of people who have concerns about their thoughts and behaviors regarding children. In this study, we examine helpline and webpage metrics from two organizations - Stop It Now! USA and Lucy Faithfull Foundation's Stop It Now! UK and Ireland - providing resources about child sexual exploitation and abuse prevention, including self-help

Sexual victimization may have serious consequences for victims' well-being. Thus, seeking support is encouraged and associated with positive outcomes. However, no research has compared the help-seeking behavior of victims of contact and image-based (i.e., noncontact) sexual violence. This study explores the differences in help-seeking behavior, and barriers to help-seeking, by comparing datasets from two online survey studies. The findings highlight that victims of contact sexual violence appear more likely to seek help, but also experience the barriers to help-seeking as greater. An exception

BACKGROUND: India has made large strides in reducing maternal mortality ratio and neonatal mortality rate, yet care-seeking behavior for appropriate care is still a challenge. We conducted a qualitative study to understand the process of recognition and care-seeking for maternal and newborn illnesses in rural India where a health intervention through women's self-help groups (SHG) to improve maternal and newborn health behaviors is implemented by a non-governmental organization, the Rajiv Gandhi Mahila Vikas Pariyojana. The study aimed to understand the process of recognition and care-seeking

BACKGROUND: The escalation of the Russian war against Ukraine in 2022 resulted in a mental health crisis, requiring prompt and relevant care provision. Numerous services were launched or adjusted to address these issues. However, research reports various obstacles in some individuals, especially from vulnerable groups, to seek help for their mental health condition. This study focuses on the factors associated with mental health help-seeking behavior among Ukrainian adults during the 2nd year of the 2022 Russian invasion.
METHODS: An online survey was distributed from 12 October 2023 to 5 Feb

BACKGROUND: University students are increasingly vulnerable to psychological distress, yet many do not seek professional mental health care. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of psychological distress, patterns of help-seeking behavior, and the barriers to accessing mental health services among Yemeni undergraduate students.
METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 2,872 undergraduate students from 16 universities across Yemen. Psychological distress was screened using the General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28), and perceived barriers to care were assessed using

Postpartum depression is a significant mental health condition that may lead to severe consequences, including suicidal ideation. This study aimed to determine the risk groups, and help-seeking behavior among postpartum women screened using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). This retrospective study included 586 postpartum women. EPDS scores were categorized as ≤9 (low risk), 10-12 (mild risk), and ≥13 (high risk). Demographic and obstetric data, including delivery characteristics and neonatal outcomes, were analyzed. Ordinal logistic regression was used to identify factors assoc

BACKGROUND: Individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) face both personal and system-based barriers in receiving first-line treatment, i.e. cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with exposure and response prevention (ERP). The present study comprehensively investigated help-seeking behavior, treatment barriers and facilitators, attitudes and access to gold-standard treatment in adults with OCD in Germany. We aimed to characterize the care situation and examine the influence of clinical and sociodemographic variables on help-seeking behavior and receiving treatment.

This study explores the severity and frequency of physical violence from an intimate partner experienced by 15- to 59-year-old women and their help-seeking behavior by using data from the "National Research on Domestic Violence Against Women in Turkey." Chi-square tests and logistic regression analyses were conducted to compare the relationship between severity and frequency of violence and women's characteristics. Of all ever-partnered women, 36% have been exposed to partner violence; almost half of these experienced severe types of violence. Women used informal strategies to manage the viole

Black Americans often rely on 9-1-1 or emergency rooms rather than mental health hotlines, reflecting enduring mistrust in formal crisis response systems. This scoping review synthesizes evidence published between 2010 and 2025 on psychological distress and help-seeking behavior among Black Americans using crisis hotlines, with particular attention to engagement with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Six databases were systematically searched, yielding 1,536 records. Following screening and quality assessment using COVIDENCE and PRISMA-ScR guidelines, ten studies met the inclusion criteria fo

Sexual minority youth (e.g., lesbian, queer, bisexual) encounter higher rates of abuse compared to their heterosexual peers. Similarly, Black youth are disproportionately affected by adverse experiences, including abuse. Seeking help after experiencing abuse has been shown to improve both mental and physical health outcomes. There is a lack of research on how the intersection of these identities affects help-seeking behaviors when experiencing different types of abuse. To address this gap, our study analyzed national data from 716 Black cisgender sexual minority women (SMW) aged 18 to 21 (Mage

Background Domestic violence is recognized as a public health issue. It has adverse impacts on women's physical, mental, and reproductive well-being. This study aimed to ascertain the sociodemographic attributes of domestic violence in women who seek help at the National Guard Health (NGH) hospitals, as well as examine the psychological condition of the victims. Methods This was a retrospective-prospective, descriptive cross-sectional study conducted in four regions in Saudi Arabia (Riyadh, Jeddah, Al Madinah, and Al-Ahsa). Military chaplains not only conduct religious services, but also provide counseling and spiritual support to military service members, operating as liaisons between soldiers and mental health professionals. In this study, active-duty soldiers (N = 889) reported help-seeking behaviors and mental health. Using logistic regressions, we describe the issues for which soldiers reported seeking help, then outline the characteristics of those who are most likely to seek help from a chaplain. Of the soldiers who sought help from a chaplain within the previous year, 29.9% reported high levels of combat

BACKGROUND: Misdiagnosis and delayed help-seeking cause significant burden for individuals with mood disorders such as major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. Misdiagnosis can lead to inappropriate treatment, while delayed help-seeking can result in more severe symptoms, functional impairment, and poor treatment response. Such challenges are common in individuals with major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder due to the overlap of symptoms with other mental and physical health conditions, as well as, stigma and insufficient understanding of these disorders.

Latino/a adolescents report worse mental health than other ethnic-racial groups in the United States, including elevated depressive symptoms and anxiety, yet they remain less likely to access mental health services. Negative perception about mental health within Latino/a communities, shaped by negative beliefs about mental illness and limited knowledge of treatment, poses significant obstacles to care. Low mental health literacy, including poor understanding of depression, anxiety, and the role of therapy and medication, further contributes to negative attitudes about mental health. Prior work

BACKGROUND: Suicide poses a significant global health challenge and is a leading cause of death among adolescent girls. Although suicidal ideation and attempts are known to increases sharply during female adolescence, and help-seeking behaviors are especially rare in low-income countries, no studies have been conducted on this population in Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess the magnitude, factors related to suicidal ideation and attempts, and help-seeking behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Stress urinary incontinence is common among older women and can substantially affect quality of life, yet medical help-seeking remains low. While socioeconomic disparities have been associated with variations in health behavior, the underlying psychosocial pathways through which these disparities manifest are not well understood. This study aimed to identify psychosocial factors that influence intention to seek care for urinary incontinence and to assess whether they explain the association between socioeconomic status and help-seeking intention.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey

Mental health problems are common among higher education students, yet formal help-seeking rates remain low. Mental health literacy (MHL) is crucial in facilitating help-seeking, but its relationship with formal help-seeking behaviors among ethnic minority students is poorly understood. This study explored MHL among Palestinian minority students in Israel using Jorm's framework, examining the association between each MHL dimension and formal help-seeking. It also investigated information-seeking methods and their relations to actual help-seeking. 129 Palestinian students completed measures of

Help-seeking behaviors (HSB) for mild symptoms vary because of differences in health care resources and patients' backgrounds. Potential HSBs for lay and professional care use are related to patients' health conditions. However, there is a lack of evidence of the relation between them. This study examined the relation between patients' potential HSBs and self-rated health (SRH). The cross-sectional study involved 169 patients, aged above 65 years, who visited a Japanese rural clinic. A validated checklist was used to assess potential patients' HSBs. A chi-square test and logistic regression we

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at risk for work-related stress, but interventions to support early help-seeking are often limited. This study aims to evaluate a risk communication intervention designed to promote help-seeking behavior and reduce stress symptoms. The risk communication intervention provides personal feedback on stress symptoms, risk factors and focuses on creating awareness of the potential disconnect between values assigned to healthy working and the effort devoted to it, based on the Disconnected Values Model.
METHODS: The study employed a pre-post, single-arm des
