A Translational Paradigm to Study the Effects of Uncontrollable Stress in Humans.

Theories on the aetiology of depression in humans are intimately linked to animal research on stressor controllability effects. However, explicit translations of established animal designs are lacking. In two consecutive studies, we developed a translational paradigm to study stressor controllability effects in humans. In the first study, we compared three groups of participants, one exposed to escapable stress, one yoked inescapable stress group, and a control group not exposed to stress. Although group differences indicated successful stress induction, the manipulation failed to differentiat

Strategies for addressing bullying with the school-age child who stutters.

This article outlines basic principles for helping school-age children who stutter to deal with bullying. Bullying may affect children's school performance and feelings of self-worth and lead to depression and feelings of helplessness and loneliness. Bullying can also exacerbate stuttering behavior, increase negative emotions and negative thoughts, and reduce therapy progress. A variety of techniques can be implemented as part of the overall treatment process to help children deal with bullying. These techniques can improve children's overall success in treatment by helping them develop social

Physician resiliency?

The profound changes in the health care industry have led to the anger, frustration, and unhappiness that physicians are feeling. It is important to examine physicians' responses to the threats to their professional autonomy, image, lifestyles, and relationships with their patients. The "learned helplessness" behavior exhibited by physicians is astounding, considering the education, status, and reputation of physicians as healers for those in need. This article explores the concept of resiliency among physicians and describes why physicians as a group may be less resilient than other individua

Culture and domestic violence: the ecology of abused Latinas.

This study examined the predictors of domestic violence within a sample of 60 immigrant Latinas, of whom 30 had sought assistance for abuse and 30 had sought other family services. Hypotheses were derived from several frameworks relevant to understanding abuse--intrapsychic (learned helplessness), interpersonal (family violence), and feminist theory. Findings related to the specific formulations were subsequently combined into a model of abuse in which the mutuality of communication within the couple mediates the effects of husband's intoxication and environmental stressors on the occurrence/s

Attributions and adjustment to life-threatening illness.

An analysis of the role of attribution in major illness and serious injury is presented. Evidence reviewed includes the impact of illness variables on attributions, the association between attributions and adjustment to illness, and the proposed mechanisms of this association. Illness and injury characteristics such as severity and time since diagnosis appear to relate to attributional activity and content, but the association between attributions and psychological or physical adjustment is weak. Overall, it would appear that the attribution construct can describe individuals' reactions to lif

N,N-dimethyltryptamine elicits antidepressant and anxiolytic effects in helpless mice: a comparative study with S-ketamine.

N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is an naturally occurring indoleamine with hallucinogenic and antidepressant effects in humans. Here, we compared the effects of DMT and S-ketamine, a fast-acting antidepressant, in helpless mice. To induce helplessness, male single and group-housed mice were exposed to inescapable footshock stress; only helpless animals were subsequently treated with S-ketamine 10 or 30 mg/kg (ip), DMT 10 or 25 mg/kg (ip), or vehicle and tested in behavioral assays. In depressive-related behavioral tests, S-ketamine and DMT (both at 10 mg/kg), only in group-housed mice, 24 h after

Effects of Librium and shock controllability upon nociception and contextual fear.

Controllable shock is known to exert less deleterious effects than does the equivalent exposure to inescapable shock. Recent findings have encouraged speculation that some of these effects may result from differences in the severity of fear produced by the shock experiences. In particular, mediation by gamma-aminobutyric acid has been implicated. In the present experiment, we examined the possibility that chlordiazepoxide (CDP) would attenuate the impact of shock in a manner similar to that of providing control over shock. As shown by others, CDP administered prior to shock treatment blocked t

Body image distortion in anorexia and bulimia nervosa: the role of perceived and actual control.

It has been suggested that a desire for control is a central factor in eating disorders. There is, however, little evidence to support this clinical hypothesis. This experimental study examines the effects of actual and perceived control on a symptom of anorexia and bulimia nervosa-body image distortion. Using a learned helplessness paradigm, it was shown that eating-disordered and comparison women respond differently to manipulations of control. Anorexic and bulimic women appear to have a cognitive style of "mistaken pessimism," overestimating body size more when an easy task is perceived as

A psychogeriatric nursing home resocialization program.

The institutional atmosphere and programming of a nursing home can often engender a downward spiral of increasing dependence and learned helplessness in its elderly residents. Elderly patients with chronic medical complaints combined with psychiatric and management problems are especially susceptible. An intermediate-and skilled-care nursing home began a special program in 1974 to deal with these patients. The program features problem-oriented rather than diagnosis-oriented recordkeeping and the use of a multidisciplinary therapeutic team to treat problem residents. Over the first four years o

Emotional and cognitive adjustment in abused children.

Research on the impact of maltreatment on children has increased in the last years, as there is a need to design appropriate treatment strategies. Social, cognitive, and emotional areas may be affected in these children. This research is aimed to study the psychological functioning of child victims, particularly in their emotional and cognitive adjustment. Nineteen children (10.3 years old) with case histories of at least 2 years of physical and emotional parental abuse and a group of 26 nonmaltreated children (9.4 years old) matched in socio-economic characteristics and coming from the same c

Reactance and helplessness following exposure to unsolvable problems: the effects of attributional style.

I assessed the effects of internal-external attributional style and amount of unsolvable problems on subsequent task performance. Undergraduate subjects were divided according to their attributional style for bad events into internal, nondefined, and external attributors and were exposed to either one, four, or no unsolvable problems. Following exposure to a single unsolvable problem, internal attributors exhibited greater frustration and hostility and better performance in a subsequent cognitive task than did external attributors. Following exposure to four unsolvable problems, internal attri

Chronic tension-type headache: an investigation of the appraisal process.

The few existing studies that have explicitly examined appraisal of stress in tension-type headache sufferers have found that these individuals perceive events in a more negative manner than headache-free controls. However, can it necessarily be assumed that they perceive events in a less accurate manner than headache-free controls? To answer this question, sixty chronic tension-type headache sufferers and 60 controls engaged in a 40-trial contingency learning task in which they had to estimate the amount of control they could exert. Results provide little support for the notion that the cogni

Personality traits associated with fear.

The extent to which personality characteristics are associated with fear was investigated. The amount of fear and the attributional style of 91 college students (74 women, 17 men) were measured using the Fear Questionnaire, the Fear Survey Schedule, and the Attributional Style Questionnaire. Analysis indicated that fear was significantly correlated with the responsibility for bad outcomes and with the tendency to generalize all outcomes to many situations. Findings are consistent with the view that significantly different attributional profiles emerge as fearfulness increases.

Depression-like behaviour in mice is associated with disrupted circadian rhythms in nucleus accumbens and periaqueductal grey.

An association between circadian rhythms and mood regulation is well established, and disturbed circadian clocks are believed to contribute to the development of mood disorders, including major depressive disorder. The circadian system is coordinated by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the master pacemaker in the hypothalamus that receives light input from the retina and synchronizes circadian oscillators in other brain regions and peripheral tissues. Lacking the tight neuronal network that couples single-cell oscillators in the SCN, circadian clocks outside the SCN may be less stable and mo

Effects of psychotropic drugs on impairment of acquisition of shuttle avoidance produced by pretreatment with pairs of tone signal and shock in mice.

The acquisition of discrete shuttle avoidance of mouse was significantly impaired by presentation of 120 pairs of a tone signal and an unavoidable/unescapable shock at 30 sec intervals for 3 consecutive days prior to the training session. Caffeine (3 and 10 mg/kg s.c.) reduced such an impairment of the avoidance acquisition, whereas diazepam (0.5-2 mg/kg s.c.), imipramine (30 mg/kg i.p.) and chlorpromazine (2 mg/kg s.c.) enhanced it, when these drugs were administered 10 min before each shock-presenting session. Ethanol (0.8-2.4 g/kg p.o.), nicotine (0.1-1 mg/kg s.c.), methamphetamine (0.1-1 m

[Criterion-oriented measurement in clinical psychology: development of a test on stress management].

Criterion-oriented tests evaluate the performance of the individual in relation to a given criterion which describes abilities and skills (intended competencies). The measuring process decides statistically if the person is "mastering" the criterion or not. The intended competencies should be represented by test items of high content-validity. The structure and application of this method especially to diagnostical issues of clinical psychology and therapeutic control are discussed. Steps are described construing a criterion-oriented test of stress and coping processes related to depressive and

The battered woman: is she a silent victim?

Although hardly a recent phenomenon, the battered woman has still not been a clearly recognizable presence to primary caregivers. Unawareness of actual victims stems from an incomplete understanding of the reality of the "battered wife syndrome," lack of knowledge about the various forms of abuse and the silence of the victims themselves. The victim rarely reports abuse to the primary care provider without being asked. She does, however, present with common psychosomatic complaints, such as choking, gastrointestinal disorders or nervousness. Her injuries may range from bruises to fractures, an

Instant and Lasting Down-Regulation of NR1 Expression in the Hippocampus is Associated Temporally with Antidepressant Activity After Acute Yueju.

Accumulating evidence indicated that N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors are involved in the pathophysiology of depression and implicated in therapeutic targets. NMDA antagonists, such as ketamine, displayed fast-onset and long-lasting antidepressant activity in preclinical and clinical studies. Previous studies showed that Yueju pill exerts antidepressant effects similar to ketamine. Here, we focused on investigating the association of acute and lasting antidepressant responses of Yueju with time course changes of NMDA receptor subunits NR1, NR2A, and NR2B expressions in the hippocampus, a
